I'll take this opportunity to say that I don't see any reason why Sage
would not be a viable option for a (properly worded) CCLI (course,
curriculum, laboratory) grant from the NSF. Not that it would be
guaranteed to get it, but if it was made clear what exactly about Sage
(or a book) would not be done by commercial ventures anyway, it should
have a good shot, especially given the 'broader impact' piece. I
recently attempted to ask precisely these questions of some NSF folk
at a workshop, and it seems that the problem with software is to find
what would not be done anyway by a commercial company. I don't know
why this is, but that is their criterion. Still, given e.g. Jason
Grout's recent post I am sure that one could come up with quite a few
things.

If one actually browses the CCLI awards (or goes to the JMM poster
session for such things), there are some products out there that do
not really hold a candle to what Sage is capable of. In fact, some
might even consider joining Sage. All this notwithstanding, the
people I talked to also said that CCLI language was being rather
heavily reworded, so that one would want to wait until the next
announcement. Then there the national budget woes to consider...

Geogebra has also gotten some weird NSF funding, though I feel like it
was through some other subgranting arena.
