One more thing I just noticed.  When I run notebook(...) to start up
the notebook server, the last line displayed is

https://selmer.warwick.ac.uk:8000/?startup_token=634498ad5f3559f3b0121beeb6e0beb8:
No such file or directory

and this may be a clue to the problem.
