You are right I am writing this mail from fedora - but as mentioned I was debugging SAGE on ubuntu. On fedora I do find the mesa packages too, but not on ubuntu! And as mentioned mayavi2 runs on ubuntu without needing those mesa stuff. So there should be no difference between mayavi stand-alone and mayavi in SAGE - or am I wrong?!
