 I think it makes more sense to develop the ''sparse'' approach on a
 different ticket -- see [#5566].
 Hence, one should disregard my attachments, as everything is now at
 [#5566]...

 And, concerning a common interface, I think it would be almost trivial to
 change the whole thing so that
 {{{SymmetricPolynomialRing(QQ,['x'],implementation='dense')}}} returns the
 same as {{{InfinitePolynomialRing(QQ,['x'])}}}

 Can we agree to split the tickets, so that Mike's original ticket is now
 'with patch, needs review'?
