The reference which I would cite is Reutenauer, Free Lie algebra.
The name I gave is probably confusing. Indeed, the basis is in fact the
Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free Lie algebra whose enveloping
algebra is the free algebra.
Is it clearer?
