 OK, I made the change to exponent-vectors for extracting the coefficients
 of the polynomial. The code is much cleaner now, but sadly, it actually
 works a little slower now. I cannot really explain why this is happening,
 since doing `f[[0,3,0]]` is faster than doing
 `f.monomial_coefficient(y^3)`. In any case, if you have more performance-
 improving suggestions, let me know.
