He can do with his own code what he wants. The point is that I wouldn't be
allowed to release a "giac-1.1.2" which is different from the official
version without clearly marking it as different.
No, this does not make sense: if it were true then the author of a GPLed
code changing the source of the released version x.y.z on the fly would
cause all the re-distributors of the code in question to be in breach of
GPL. I would rather interpret this situation as the violation of GPL by
the author, as this can be seen as denial of requests by re-distributors
to see the source of x.y.z: instead they are shown something modified!
