That introduces regressions: stuff that used to convert to SR in the past
will fail to do so once this gets merged. I'd prefer to avoid such breaks
in backward compatibility, even if it means less elegant behavior.

That is true, but I can think of no way to maintain backwards
compatibility and avoid that dependence.
