I could make `via_nf` default to false. But practically speaking, when I
try to convert stuff to radical expressions, I care mostly about obtaining
a radical expression, and only secondly about that expression not
depending on too much other stuff (like the exact descriptor tree, the
result of `do_polred`, and whatever). So returning a value which only
depends on the minimal polynomial is nice when that value is radical, but
if that fails, I really think I'd want to try harder instead of giving up
early.
