 How about
 {{{
 sage: var a, b
 }}}
 handled by the preparser. Its not a function, so it alleviates the side
 effect concern. The `var` statement would only be allowed at the beginning
 of the line (just like the print statement), so you wouldn't be able to
 assign anything anyways. And its easily handled by the preparser as
 `'^[\s]*var '` regex.
