Comment (by ncohen):

 > But the tests won't pass, will they, in my scenario?

Please state your scenario precisely, and I will try to answer. Right now,
I simply do not understand what you are thinking about.

 > And the optional packages are also automatically upgraded?

My mistake. Indeed, they are not. This would be a nice improvement, which
you are welcome to implement on another ticket.

 > Or just the meta-info in `build/pkgs`?

 Indeed, this gets updated.

 > I think that would suffice for me, as for sure treating the old-style
/new-style issue is separate from this ticket.

Auto-upgrading optional packages is, I assure you, totally unrelated from
adding some keyword to "--optional" automaticall when running doctests.

 > On a related note (certainly not to be dealt with here) would there be
something that would auto test optional ''interfaces'', which are also
marked with `# optional`? Like Maple or Mma. That would be very useful
 for keeping those interfaces up-to-date.

Not that I know. I have the same problem with the LP solvers Gurobi and
CPLEX, which have no associated packages.
