 I should apologize first: I didn't have the energy to read all of the
 comments here. Nonetheless, I feel like some of the issues would be
 avoided if the doctest framework were changed regarding the reporting of
 results: if we are testing optional packages and there are failures,
 doctesting could report:
 {{{
 All standard tests pass!
 Failures related to optional packages:
    blah blah blah
 Failures related to experimental packages:
    blah blah blah
 }}}
 With reporting like that, users could understand why there were failures
 and also the relative importance of those failures.
