Thanks for rebasing; I should throw away my 'develop' branch, it seems.
I've switched to the branch you provided. The adjusting of doctests of
_check_database was also done in #19777, which is now part of beta3 -
that's why you don't see them anymore.
Should I proceed with Volker's suggestion to move GAP code to a file in
SAGEROOT/src/ext/ ?
