 Since now the code is in the polynomial ring you can simplify it a lot.
 Just remove all of
 {{{
 u = f.unit()
 if u.is_one():
     ...
 else:
     ....
 }}}
 and do
 {{{
 u = self.base_ring()(f.unit())
 try:
     u.nth_root(n)
 except AttributeError:
     raise NotImplementedError
 }}}
