 I am now going through the bugs that you reported:

 sage: X.<x,y> = InfinitePolynomialRing(QQ)
 sage: x[2^31]
 Traceback (most recent

 OverflowError: range() result has too many items
 sage: x[100]
 TypeError: ...
 }}}

 I found the reason: There is one attribute of {{{X}}} that is changed even
 when {{{x[2^31]}}} fails. When subsequently calling {{{x[100]}}}, that
 attribute makes the sytem believe that the underlying polyomial ring is
 big enough to fit {{{x100}}} --- which is not the case.

 My plan is to go through the whole code before posting a patch. I hope
 that's fine.
