Comment:
The patch trac_7532-rings.patch fixes the problem in rings.pyx and all
the fallout -- I checked the entire library and it is fine. The diagnosis
was exactly as above, and only a few lines needed to be changed!
I am switchingg this to "needs work" and then "needs review", hoping that
it can get in on the back of #7535 (just this once!)
