The attached patch fixes the above issue which causes matplotlib to pick
up the system freetype2 after moving Sage (even after #9208). One thing
led to another and I ended up restructuring and rewriting lots of the code
in the file too. I hope it's cleaner and has less portability issues (I
changed a lot of things to use os.path.join, for example).
