#8680 has now been merged, and in one of my tests, I applied both of the
patches from #8680 before both of the patches here, and it worked fine.
So I think at this point just merging the patches from #9287 before the
patches here should be good enough. No need to merge patches from any
ticket in between two of the patches from another one.
John (Cremona): I'll leave this to you to restore to "positive review" if
your tests pass.
