Sorted, I added one line (line 170) in sage/interfaces/gp.py which says

self._eval_line('default(breakloop,0);')
}}}
to get the command run everytime a new gp instance is created. Now we get
{{{
sage: gp.eval('1/0')
' *** at top-level: 1/0\n *** ^--\n *** _/_:
division by zero'
}}}
(followed by a new sage: prompt) and also
{{{
RR(gp(exp(1)))
2.71828182845905
sage:
}}}
with no problems.
