The code looks good modulo some tiny issues:
* I'll attach a referee patch in a sec which improves the Sphinx
typesetting slightly
* I'm not happy about the docstring "This function works, but doesn't get
called when it should." Either the function should get removed or the
problem fixed.
Modulo those I give this patch a positive review.
