 Perhaps a look at `setup.py` answers some of your questions... ;-)

 (And no, the Linux system having 64-bit libraries [only] in `/usr/lib64`
 is not "misconfigured", see above. We had to add a similar patch to PARI's
 graphics detection for the same reason btw.)
