 There's a fair amount of Sage which will build with the Sun compiler, and
 I hope to increase that, so please don't do anything that will screw up if
 cc is not gcc.

 Note there are two shell scripts $SAGE_LOCAL/bin/testcc.sh and
 $SAGE_LOCAL/bin/testcxx.sh which actually check what the compilers are,
 and does this withougt making assumptions based on their name. They
 compile a simple program (written inline) which checks what preprocessor
 variables are defined.

 I certainly would not assume a failure to link cc to gcc was a bug on any
 machine.

 With my fathers funeral in a few days, I'm not really in the mode for
 detailed analysis of this, but my initial feelings are I would leave well
 alone.
