The patch above is a bit hackish. We should either pass the additional
compiler flag ''conditionally'' (on Linux systems only, where we can rely
on a GNU linker), or perhaps instead use GCC's `--noexecstack` parameter,
of which I currently don't know whether it is supported by ancient
versions of GCC.
