Here's an attempt at a patch. (I'm tired of wanting to refer people in
sage-devel to the Developer's Guide, but then hesitating because of its
out-dated insistence on using 'cp' instead of 'patch', and nothing seems
to be happening with this. Plus I'm trying to avoid grading an exam.)
