I thought one of the purposes of the buildbot was to test that Sage builds
"out of the box" on a variety of platforms, so tuning environment
variables for use with the buildbot machines doesn't seem like the right
solution. But maybe I'm not thinking about the buildbot the right way.
Also, supporting "ancient" machines is important: if we want
mathematicians in underdeveloped countries, for example, to be able to use
Sage, they may not have access to anything better.
