In Saligao, we respond to offences against both these vulnerable
sections of the village. Our main role is to liaise between
victims and women's rights groups like the Mapusa based,
Bailancho Manch, Panjim based Bailancho Saad and Margao's
Bailancho Ekvott.
For assaults on children's rights, we have found
Children's Rights in Goa (CRG), as well as Stop Child Abuse Now
(SCAN - Emidio and Audrey) very prompt and committed.
We have excellent local laws in the recent Protection of Women
from Domestic Violence Act, 2005,
the Goa Children’s Act 2003 and the Commissions for Protection of
Child Rights Act, 2005
But we are always short of time...and *volunteers*!
For instance, just now, there is a little boy working in the
controversial fruit gaddo,
next to St. Anne's Chapel in Tabravaddo. Several times last
year, we warned the adult vendors
of the consequences. The boy disappeared. But he is back again
this year.
Right now we just have not had the time to stop again and
investigate.
May be he is just past the legal age - 14 years - for a child to
be employed. May be not.
But it is possible to rescue such children and put them in
free/subsidised
boarding schools around Goa. We do it when we can, but we
certainly need more
local help in Saligao.
