Dear Sanjeev
I'm glad the flag of ridding saligao of its garbage and plastic waste
menace is still riding high.
Firstly let me mention that the drive conducted in january, was to rid
the "public areas" of saligao i.e the streets of its plastic waste. It
DID NOT focus on garbage but only focussed on waste plastic litter on
the roadsides. Also, during the drive, we had clearly mentioned to the
volunteers NOT to venture and clean a few areas that we deemed extremely
hazardeous for a simple cleanup; examples of these included the nallah
next to the cemetery you mentioned and the nallah on the Chog-M road
just after the ANHC (where there is a sign put up from saligao lovers
asking people not to dump their garbage there).
Plans were shelved on 2 occasions after that for conducting the second
drive because elections got in the way.
Yes plans are definatly in the pipeline to make saligao run on a
sustaining model. I personally am pleased to report that the my pilot
project to recycle tetra packs of a few houses has paid rich dividends
with almost a hundred being collected in just a month!. with careful
planing maybe this can be extended to the whole village.
But we all have to admit something which few of us (like you, nicholas
and a few others) do - *Segregate at source and Composting.*
A good friend of mine in the same recycling industry; Clinton Vaz has
made available for free download a couple of his handouts - with a fast
"understand it quick" explanation on segregation. check out these
handouts on his website at www.vrecycle.in <http://www.vrecycle.in>
For the next drive I'm planning on modifying these posters slightly and
distributing them to households.
I hope to have your active participation in these projects. We need to
DO things rather we just TALKING about them. this I learnt from the
tagline from my alma mater - deeds not words (facta non verba).
