As a lawfully present foreigner privileged to stay in this beautiful village for some period and grateful for the experience, let me add my tuppence worth to this debate.
I agree wholeheartedly with the comment by "M & M" that the issue of the riot at Porvorim on 31 October should not be broadened out into other issues: *"No. The problem in this riot is not narcotics. Let us not mix issues, please."* Indeed. The issue is a riot. Not the presence of foreigners, drugs, alleged sexual offences etc that "M & M" have also (and rather inconsistently) raised. These issues may also require attention. I have no idea. But the issue at hand is a riot. Speaking as a foreigner and guest in this beautiful state, I can only say that if I were lucky enough to have been born Goan, there are two questions that I would now be asking, and neither of them involve race or nationality: 1. Why on earth did my brave constabulary not act sooner to put an end to the riot and the horror of a dead and mutilated corpse being dragged onto the road in the heat of the day? And what is to be done about this? 2. When and where are the perpetrators of the riot to be tried and appropriate punishment to be delivered? All the rest is a case of *"mix (ing) issues"*, as "M & M" so clearly point out. As for the denial of racism in the former email from this couple, I guess it's not racism if one doesn't identify Nigerians in particular as the object of one's sweeping demands that all foreigners resident in the village be investigated including by one's neighbours. But there are other words for such a proposal and the attitude of mind from which it derives and they are words that are equally as unpleasant. I would have thought that the incident at Porvorim would cause all people of goodwill to come together in "*solidarity*". Not start falling apart and demanding actions against innocent groups of other people holding nothing but goodwill towards the village and the state.
