Dear SaligaoNetters,

I am sorry to see this topic still being continued, with aspersions cast etc. etc. Once we read Fr. Nasciment's message, felt his embarrassment & that of Kevin, & Kevin's apology it would be in the interest of all, especially Fr. Nasciment's, to close the topic.

However since I was one of those not so "gullible" "goan" "donor", I will answer Alan from my personal point & general point of view, hopefully with no hard feelings on either side...none on my side anyway. We are here for too short a while to hold grudges & hard feelings .... Alan if you so wish, you may reply directly to my email address so that Fr. Nasciment is not involved anymore.

Hello All Saligaokars,

I, for the longest time, have not said anything about Fr. Nasimento getting donations to purchase a laptop though I have been reading about it.

I was an alter boy for father Nasimento when I was a kid and I could not in my wildest imaginations think that father Nasimento would want such luxuries.

Missed the point! Didnt consider it a luxury, just felt that it would be easier keeping in touch with Fr. Nasciment because just visiting him once a year, for me is not enough. At that particular point in time, didnt know about the the misunderstanding & error of course. But then, each to his/her opinions/views. For me it was not a donation like we give to charity etc.... it was a contribution towards an item that would help us all keep in touch with Fr. Nasciment. I used to enjoy reading Fr. Nasciment's postings on Saligaonet, he has been a fount of information. Also I find it difficult getting to an internet cafe hence am pleased at the suggestion of having a computer installed in the Saligao Institute with internet facilities (when will that be? Any Idea, anyone?) Unfortunately, Fr. Nasciment wont be in a position to get there either but I will ..that is if my legs are still working by then..... I havent been very mobile last one month, old age creeping up on me & me frail bones.....I'm not kidding. Even missed the Goans Dinner/Dance (a first for me) on the Feast of St. Francis Xavier.....boo hoo!

Kevin certainly knows that a laptop in Canada is not that expensive if he really had good intentions about father Nasimeto's needs. A person of Kevin's status being a vet doctor, a mere $500-$600 is not much for the intention intended.

The reaction that came based on Kevin's plea for donations was typically Goan type, whereby we >tend to believe anything and everything a person of status says. Kevin, there are a lot of people

For me, donation means giving freely if one so wishes - there is no "goan type", "indian type", "abroad type" "foreign type", "global type" & donors dont look into the status of anyone - I've never considered Kevin as "person of status" so I guess that lets me off/out....ha ha! Sorry Kevin, if I've stripped you of "status" as I still see you as the guy walking down that slope from your house to the bus stop, hands in pockets with bag on back/shoulder & smiling away on reaching your friends, acquaintances & Saliganvkars. I know a lot of people who are at the highest level & definitely have status but to date I havent believed all they say. Any donations made(including those made here abroad, in Saligao, Bombay, Sri Lanka or wherever) are made for certain reasons known to me only. Anyway, my belief is when one gives, one receives too - and this has been proved again & again.

who read the numerous articles that are posted on Saligaonet and just because people never >reply, it does not mean the readers agree with the articles posted.

Exactly! If more Saliganvkars (Netters) not only read but posted their views too, then we would have had more to chew on & perhaps we would have laid to rest the whole topic based on those views. In this case we would have got your valuable insight Alan, into the thoughts & feelings of Fr. Nasciment since our thoughts & feelings were at entirely different tangents. Due to the misunderstanding & error (call it what you wish) Fr. Nasciment was embarrassed & I regret that but I know he will forgive all of us for this. I will be meeting him next month when I'm in Goa (I've known him since my school days & am a great fan of his) & will personally apologise though Kevin has done his part already. I am confident that Fr. Nasciment will understand that we didnt mean to affect his sensibilities.

And lastedly, all those who have already donated to the fund - wake up, dont be gullible just >because you live abroad.

It would be best not to presume too much.

This clubbing together of "donation", "gullibility", "living abroad" doesnt make sense.

I speak for myself when I say, - I'm wide awake, living abroad but not gullible, & make donations & sometimes contributions irrespective of what others say, or want, or do, & I have had reasons and still have reasons for making donations/contirbutions - I dont need to justify that (isnt there a saying - dont let your left hand know what your right is doing?), just as I have reasons for making donations hereafter to Saligao Institute & other institutions - so am I to be classed as gullible? Well Alan, do so if you wish, it is your prerogative. I dont mind in the least!

I end here & wont be making any more postings on this Net with regard to this "laptop" topic. Of course I can always correspond on a personal basis since all know my email address by now.

It is nice & cool here since yesterday & hopefully it is just as cool in India, & guess it is freezing in some parts of the world.

Have a good day!
Annette

Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2007 18:52:24 +0000From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [SALIGAONET] Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas - laptop Dears,I have been specially requested by Fr. Nasciment Mascarenhas presently at the Clergy Home, to please post the below message addressed to all the Saligaonetters on the Saligaonet mailing list through my e-mail ID. Daniel F. de Souza/Vasco.______________________________________________________________ <<Dear Saligaonetters, First and foremost I wish you all well! and a big God Bless. What was a simple private talk has now been freely discussed in an open forum on the Saligaonet. I regret it. This private talk was done in my room at the Clergy Home in August 2007 between Mr. Kevin Saldanha, his sister and yours faithfully. Mrs Dephnie and Kevin Saldanha came to thank me for visiting their father Mr. Edwin Saldanha who was interned in the Jesus Mary & Joseph (JMJ) hospital attached to our clergy home. I was asked to assist Mr. Edwin Saldanha spiritually and so my frequent visits to enquire about his health, administration of the last sacraments and eventually attending his funeral at Saligao Church, I felt, was the main cause to visit, thank and also enquire about my health. Before leaving, Mr. Kevin asked me why I was not posting on Saligaonet my writings as I used to do previously. My answer to him was : ‘ I do not have a computer nor any cyber-café here.’ Incidentally, I was transported in an emergency here at the advice of Dr. S.N. Desai, of Vasco, and our ecclesiastical authorities. During those days in early September-October 2006 my computer at Vasco church began giving lot of trouble and Mr. Daniel F. de Souza from Vasco/Saligao on my request was sending my emails through his computer. When I was sent to Clergy Home I never imagined that I would be here for such a long time (almost one year past) and the fact is that I still continue at the Clergy Home, am far better in health and yet uncertain when I will return to Vasco. After Mr. Kevin Saldanha returned to Canada, suddenly one fine morning in September 2007 Mr. Cecil Pinto from Panjim, a friend of Mr. Kevin, visited me here delivering me ‘Good wishes’ card from Kevin. At the same time he said Mr. Kevin Saldanha was keen to donate me a computer, and he (Mr. Cecil Pinto) is asked to find out prices of a computer, laptop etc. In fact he once again came and said ‘Kevin is going in for a laptop.’ Now the third person who knew about this donation of a lap-top by Kevin Saldanha was Cecil Pinto. Then there was no talk for some time and one day I phoned to Cecil Pinto and he was emphatic in telling me that he (Cecil) was not in it, and I felt that was the end. On 27th Nov 2007, Mr. Frederick Noronha was at Clergy Home to deliver me a book on Saligao written by Mr. Mel D’Souza, a Saligaokar based in Canada. He was in a big hurry to go as he had an urgent meeting but expressed something about laptop, donation in cash…etc. I was left clueless as to how Frederick came to know about our private talk. On 4th December 2007, a friend of mine a Saligaokar from Mumbai phoned to me late night asking me what was all this about a laptop, Fr. Nascimento etc being discussed on the Saligaonet. I merely told him that I was ignorant of the open discussion he mentioned to me. However, I was a little inquisitive to know about the discussion taking place on the Saligaonet. The following day I phoned to Daniel F. de Souza at Vasco and he gave me the news and said he would pass on the hard copies of the postings on the Saligonet wrt the laptop. I told him that I was coming to Vasco on 8th Dec 2007, for a priest’s Ordination and then to his residence to collect the same. He was kind enough to give me hard copies of the relevant postings on the Saligaonet. I was too shocked to read all that was being openly discussed in the cyberspace as regards donations to purchase a laptop to Fr. Nascimento, and why my name was being dragged unnecessarily into all this. In the first instance, I never asked for a computer. Mr. Kevin Saldanha said he was donating one via Cecil Pinto. I wished Mr. Kevin could send me a e-mail with Cecil Pinto and asked for my opinion regarding funding of the laptop by asking for donations from Saligaokars. Nothing like this happened. On the contrary there was an open discussion, and campaign for funds, some Saligaonetters already began sending cash donations etc. All this was uncalled for. If it was not feasible for Mr. Kevin Saldanha to donate, he could let me know about it and the matter would have been laid to rest there and then. But, it was surprisingly not done. Now, I would humbly ask the Saligaonetters to please ‘desist’ from sending money to buy a laptop for me and next ‘to immediately return back the money donated to the respective donors.’ I hope better sense will prevail. I am much better now and continue to pray for you and your families.Fr. Nascimento J. Mascarenhas.Saligao /(Clergy Home, Porvorim) >>
