That's true. But sometimes the 'law of unintended consequences' works too. Good things can flow out of self-interest. Though I'm not an enthusiast of the Ann Rynd school of thought, even a cursory look at history would prove this to be true. Some 46 years ago, the Indian state decided to end Portuguese rule in Goa "essentially on a decision made out of self-interest". Contrary to the shrill voices today heard in cyberspace (and the problems notwithstanding), the vast majority of people here would believe that things have improved for them over the decades. I'm not talking about "those good old days" perspectives, but sheer quality of life, infrastructure availability, job opportunities. Someone, somewhere started an ideological revolt against the then powerful Roman Empire many centuries ago. In a few days back, we'll be celebrating Christmas.
