You are right, MODE is is slowed down.
But this slowdown si sometimes "turned off",
e.g. when saving. I don't understand this.
I wrote Speccy emulators for Sam years ago, and I had
to write special LOAD and SAVE routines.

I did some changes to Speccy ROM, so SAVE runs well
at Sam's clock (around 4.8MHz, if I can remember).
But this applies only to SAVE, since cpu during LOAD runs
at 4 MHz.
Also, some games using MIDI port 253 for AY music (128k)
causes Sam to boost back to 4.8MHz.

Does anyone information on how this is done, and why does it
occur?
