Hi! Afaik you can go as far as Baden-Baden to the south, Landau to the west, Bruchsal to the north and Pforzheim to the east with the tram.
If you are willing to pay more for transportation, you can even consider Mannheim and take the IC train (25 min, I think). I don't know how long it takes from Stuttgart, Baden-Baden or Strassbourg by train. And for those that travel by car: France with the Alsace is not far but you have to cross the Rhine river - in this case you better take the car to W�rth and change into the tram to go into the city. Oh, and a warning for those that travel by car: there are radar installations on the B36 and on nearly all important streets inside the city.
