 I have reproduced this phenomenon, see attached files. I ran "liquidsoap -
 < spikes.liq" script on a small server (low-power CPU) and got
 "spikes.log" which logs the time according to gettimeofday and according
 to the streaming clock. Then I graphed it using "gnuplot < spikes.plot"
 and obtained the attached PNG: it shows that each metadata update causes a
 drop of 25 cycles (1 cycle = 0.04s, so that's 1 second). Now, the server
 is pretty loaded currently, but this still seems a little high...
