Hey Ted,

I'm not sure what you've covered in the past, but there are a number of
topics I am itching to learn about concerning Linux and Linux software.
It'd be great to hear what you Linux guru's think about the following:

1) Best Practices for securing a new Linux install. I was born on
windows so I know the standard routine for a new windows box - install a
firewall, install AV, install all service packs and patches, install
spyware removal software of choice, disable unneeded services, and on
and on and on. Do you need to run AV on a Linux box / is there anything
out there for Linux AV? Everybody needs a firewall, but how about
spyware removal - it is even an issue in Linux? As far as updating the
OS I've seen how Yum totally blows away windows update or SUS (Software
Update Services, soon to be Windows Update Services). I plan to put
Linux boxes onto my company's production network as soon as I can, but
not before I can be certain that I know what I'm doing.

2) Linux Software: Postfix, Spam assassin, Snort, Samba. How I wish I
could skip straight from ignoramus to expert. Postfix has kicked my butt
several times already. Any experienced persons on these subjects would
definitely have my attention.

3) Integration into Windows Environments/Networks. This basically sums
up my efforts with Linux. I've got a 100% windows network and I see lots
of places my company can benefit from the little penguin. On some
servers I want to replace windows with Linux. In other areas I simply
want to supplement what we have with an additional Linux box - Snort/IDS
for example.

Anybody else interested in these topics? I guess they wouldn't have to
be sat on until a meeting - we could post on them on the list - but
either is good for me.

Well that's enough rambling from me for today.

Andy M.

Hi guys,

It's been quiet on the list lately.
I've been wondering what if anything do some of you
cats wish to learn or relearn at the next meeting.
I have a couple of suggestions but I was hoping others
would have some as well.
