That's very interesting, Jack, and no doubt it was an interesting venue for
music and political meetings.
In my rambles I have discovered a bricked in (actually, stoned-in) room with
door and window at the base of an old railway bridge near a footpath that
has been made more accessible to pedestrian traffic. By the looks of the
stone it appears to have been blocked up for 90 or 100 years at least. It
strikes me as the perfect place for people to pause on their walk, hear some
music, enjoy a pint of beer or a cup of coffee, and argue the politics of
the day.
Of course, in North America you wouldn't have pried the first stone out of
the doorway before the police would arrive to pepper-spray you, handcuff
you, and charge you with about ten crimes against humanity. People got a
pounding for doing less when the OAS conference was held here.
