I'm moving an app that gets only 30 to 50 visitors a day to a RailsPlayground VPS running Passenger. After all the listeners (listener?) die, the startup time is more than 30 seconds, unacceptable for a site that some pay a fee for access to data. The techs have not explained why it is so large, I see mentions on the web of 'a few seconds' delay. It has adequate memory (512MB), at least for putting up the home page.

This page

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/853532/slow-initial-server-startup-when-using-phusion-passenger-and-rails

indicates that the 'smart' spawn method can help, but is incompatible with RMagick, which my app uses. I'm looking into setting the PassengerPoolIdleTime way up, any down side to that?

I could set up a tickler elsewhere to hit the site regularly, but that's a kludge. RailsPlayground suggests I should just move to Mongrel. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Scott
