Matt,
Thanks for the idea. We actually have turned all the RF visible FSK off.
Unfortunately there was no change with the 450i performance.

Have you tried shutting down all the FSK gear for say a quick reboot using SNMP
and seeing if the 450i link tests made an improvement during that time? It
would tell you what you could be looking at when you make the full transition
to 450 gear. Maybe some of your problems are from FSK noise yet despite being
synced.

From what he told me today, yes, and the new integrated sector was
pretty much a replacement. And I did ask if they listened to us about
null fill for their in-house developed antennas. Yup, just like the
Laird's. I'm really impressed with the compactness. It does have a bit
of heft from the internal shielding to get that good f/b, but it's not
bad at all. The mounts are definitely lighter compared to the Laird, but
look and feel solid.

a new Cambium home-grown -3dB 90 with a 450i AP slapped on the back of

450i AP + external sector. I had no idea it existed. Coming in 3GHz

Re: [AFMUG] Bring on the snow

2016-09-28 Thread George Skorup
I was looking at radio porn all day at Cambium HQ. Medusa is sexy. The
radio, not the freak, I mean Greek chick.

And did anyone know that there's a new 5GHz 450i 90 degree integrated
sector? I'm not talking about the one that has not-so-good f/b ratio
(which Matt said is not being sold anymore, for good reason). There's a
new Cambium home-grown -3dB 90 with a 450i AP slapped on the back of it.
No coax to weather-seal! And same price as a connectorized 450 or 450i
AP + external sector. I had no idea it existed. Coming in 3GHz later
too. Take out of box and install. I love it.

Re: [AFMUG] cargo van partition/bulkhead question

2016-09-28 Thread Joe Novak
The only time I had stuff go flying is when I took the work van into the
ditch due to black ice on hwy 39. The old Astro vans at that time had the
cage behind the seats but the mid section/door removed.

Stuff really goes when you hit the snow filled ditch at 65. I honestly had
very little reason to believe conditions where bad... it was a sunny day
but frosty. Maybe 5 degrees out. The snow from the ditches was blowing out
into the road way (not very obviously).

The wind took the back of the van and "redirected" me into the ditch. Astro
vans do not have much weight in the rear and the road was a ice sheet.

Can definitely be unexpected. Quite a few of the things in the back ended
up in the front cab. Nothing hit me thankfully.

Subject: [AFMUG] Can't downgrade mikrotik routeros

Hello all,

We are trying to install our normal mikrotik os version which is 6.32.4 since
we have tested and found it the most stable.

The latest ccr router we received has 6.35.2 on it and we're not having any
luck getting it to downgrade to the stable bug fix version. Some mikrotik forum
posts say that you're not able to downgrade the software below what it shipped
with. I find this doesn't make sense because the os didn't ship with the bug
fix release, but rather the more unstable "current" version.

Any advice how to downgrade when the normal procedure doesn't work? Is it
possible to downgrade to a version lower than what the factory installed?

If not, would net install work to force the version we want? The way it is now,
there's not even a possible way to install the latest 6.34.6 bug fix release
since it's lower than 6.35.2

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

2016-09-28 Thread Eric Kuhnke
I've always thought their main purpose was for security, I'm guessing
you're not in/near a big city or a place with a lot of drug addicts... I
usually see partitions on windowless contractor vans that also have locks
like these on the rear and side door:

http://www.americanvan.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/M/L/ML-001_3.jpg

For some of the local dark fiber operators that have field technicians with
advanced OTDRs, DWDM optical spectrum analyers and ribbon fusion splicers
there could easily be $50,000 of equipment and tools in the back of an E250
van.

[AFMUG] cargo van partition/bulkhead question

2016-09-28 Thread Ken Hohhof
Is there any legal or insurance requirement to have one of these? I hate
them, and while I understand they are to prevent decapitation by a flying
object from the cargo area, I can't recall ever having such a flying object.

I like having a rear window on the van for visibility, and even with a
backup camera and sideview mirrors, being able to see out the back is nice.

Are there other advantages to them? I guess the AC and heater might work
better if isolated from the cargo space. I've seen claims it makes the
cabin quieter, but anytime I've driven a van with a partition, there has
been an annoying rattle from the door to the back. I could maybe see if you
could put some shelving units up against the back of the partition. That
might even make a van with dual sliding side doors viable.

(Holy cross-posting, Batman!)

It is possible that MT did a board revision, and the newer revision of the
hardware requires 6.35.2 as minimum for the reasons Josh stated
(drivers/hardware support, etc.). However, you could certainly try your luck
with Netinstall.

What model of CCR is this?

[AFMUG] Can't downgrade mikrotik routeros

2016-09-28 Thread Darin Steffl
Hello all,

We are trying to install our normal mikrotik os version which is 6.32.4
since we have tested and found it the most stable.

The latest ccr router we received has 6.35.2 on it and we're not having any
luck getting it to downgrade to the stable bug fix version. Some mikrotik
forum posts say that you're not able to downgrade the software below what
it shipped with. I find this doesn't make sense because the os didn't ship
with the bug fix release, but rather the more unstable "current" version.

Any advice how to downgrade when the normal procedure doesn't work? Is it
possible to downgrade to a version lower than what the factory installed?

If not, would net install work to force the version we want? The way it is
now, there's not even a possible way to install the latest 6.34.6 bug fix
release since it's lower than 6.35.2

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

you need to get the consumer connect product from calix for it to be worth it.

Well it works with the E7 GPON card on the other end.
So yeah, you kinda gotta be a Calex using company to make the G version work.

The E version will work on anything but you will only get all the nice things

Its only feature rich with the software Calix gives you. Just selling you a

Doesn’t do any good without the horse. If you talk to Calix they’ll help you

Re: [AFMUG] Calix gigacenter 844E

2016-09-28 Thread chuck
Well it works with the E7 GPON card on the other end.
So yeah, you kinda gotta be a Calex using company to make the G version work.

The E version will work on anything but you will only get all the nice things
if you are setup with Calix to make use of the whole suite of features.

I thought the 844G was the gpon version. So you can’t get the software for
them unless you’re setup to buy them directly from Calix?

Its only feature rich with the software Calix gives you. Just selling you a
router is just sending you a router with a fiber gpon interface.

Doesn’t do any good without the horse. If you talk to Calix they’ll help you
understand the hardware and let you try stuff out. No reason to even buy it
from someone. I’ve been happy with the support they’ve given and how much
they’ve helped us every step of the way.

They look cool, and would be "fun" to have... but they would never get
to some of the tower sites we had in Idaho. All their demo videos are
on hard pack, wet snow, on flat ground. Often you have to be able to
"side-hill" many of the trails because the snow has drifted over the
normal trail... and sometimes that means driving through 2-3 feet of
fresh snow at the same time.

Here is a picture of a perfect example. That's a 40 degree incline and
side-hill, with about 2 feet of fresh snow. That's a top of the line
Tucker sno-cat (4 tracks) made for this kind of weather, but it still
took us hours to get through this 100 yard section, even using the winch.

2016-09-28 Thread Jon Auer
+1 for the concept.
We use Banana Pi's running Debian for smokeping remotes and iperf. They
have gig ports and have enough CPU to take advantage of them. We started
with rPi's but their Ethernet couldn't keep up.
Costs under $100 for a board, box, and sd card.

Re: [AFMUG] Small PC for remote Troubleshooting

2016-09-28 Thread Christopher Tyler
If all you want is something to connect to remotely and don't need an actual
Windows desktop, you could use a Raspberry Pi Zero with a USB Ethernet adapter
attached for the whopping sum of about $40. Of course you would need -some-
linux know how as well unless someone was willing to write up a basic interface
or test suite for easy consumption. Makes for a very inexpensive tap.

Have you tried shutting down all the FSK gear for say a quick reboot
using SNMP and seeing if the 450i link tests made an improvement
during that time? It would tell you what you could be looking at when
you make the full transition to 450 gear. Maybe some of your problems
are from FSK noise yet despite being synced.
