Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

yes you do need to point it to where it needs to go, ok, so if you wanted to load up the twriter disk, which, by the way, is one of my favorites because I remember it from elementary school, you would do the following, and I'll put it on the new line with the code tags. mess apple2ee -flop1 disks\twriter.dsk That is literally it, so long as you are in the directory, or you add mess to your path environment variable, you will get the emulator, give it a second to load texttalker and it'll start. I want to learn how to write programs for it, because I'm a crappy coder, lol, and why not enhance my crappiness by taking on more projects. I also want to find out how the phoneme mode of the echo works, I can enter it, but I think I need a phoneme table or something to create intelligible text with it.

Thanks, Ironcross. I feel really stupid now because I think I know why I was having issues. I didn't realize that Apple2ee had 2 e's at the end. Which is really why one should review commands with their screen readers before executing them, eh?Thanks again.Edit:Hmmm, no, maybe I was typing it in the correct way the whole time, but something else is still wrong. No matter what I do, I can't get the emulator to work. it keeps telling me I need to specify floppy disks. Aren't you supposed to run mess.exe? Or do you literally point it to where it needs to go from the Windows command line?

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

This looks interesting! My first computer was an Apple 2, later I upgraded to an enhanced Apple 2e. Then when I saw where the Apple 2 was going with the Apple 2c and the Apple 2gs, I bailed out and switched to IBM PC compatibles. But I still remember the Apple 2 and enhanced Apple 2e with many good memoryies.Until I lost my vision I had been using the AppleWin emulator, I hadn't tried using it with a screen reader. You guys probably know about this already, but just in case you don't. You might be interested in a utility called Cider Press, this utility can convert Apple disk images between several formats (I think). It can also extract files from Apple disk images. If a binary file is a graphic image, it will extract it as a bitmap, if the file is a basic (Applesoft or Interger), it will extract it as a text file listing of the program. You also have the option to extract the file raw (with no conversions applied). It's a pretty handy utili
ty to have around if you deal with Apple disk images. It used to be a commercial product but is now free. And from my experience, it's readily accessible, at least I had no problems with it.Here's the link to it: http://a2ciderpress.com/

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

An Echo NVDA addin would be cool, but very hard to write. Ironicly, it's not the hardware that's the problem, but the software. The Echo's speech chip is emulated pretty well, but this chip, as I understand it, has absolutely no smarts whatsoever. On each Apple disk that talks is a program called Textalker. Textalker is the software that enables the Echo speech. Textalker takes English text and converts it into the actual control signals for the speech chip, telling it what noises to make and when. Then, Textalker sends those signals to the chip with the proper timing. If the source code for Textalker still exists anywhere, it would either be in 6502 Assembly language or some PC DOS language, once again, possibly Assembly, since they did make a version of the Echo for the PC. Thus, Textalker would have to be rewritten from the ground up.

Hi all.[[wow]] this topic is old.I barely touched the mess apple program back in 2013.While I am part of that folder, its been stagnant for like ages.I never got round many of the programs though and I never got things fully working enough to really be interested though I had a good bash at the program for a few days.I still am in the folder but there has not been any updates since I don't know I know nothing was done last year and maybe not much before that either.Initially the project seemed to have got to a start but 3 months in the entire thing stopped, I have been seriously thinking of deleting it or at least pulling out to save space as the interest I had is not much anymore.Since I do have beatstar to do and realitysoftware games which I am still doing on and off.I have no idea when the last official comment was posted, a couple queries are in there which are a bit later than that but no one has responded and I can only a
ssume the official devs of the folder are no more or have lost interest. The folder is still active if you wish to join I guess but there have not been updates for god knows how long.

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Yes, just like all other platforms, there are programs and games for the Apple II which are accessible, and those which aren't. There are many reasons for inaccessibility, both technical and less technical, E.G. the game is just too visual to be accessible. And unlike modern programs, all these Apple II games are decades old, so there's no contacting the developers about accessibility. Even if a developer was still around, and still had the source code, there just wouldn't be any great benefit to doing so, even if it could be done which in many cases it couldn't.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=155457#p155457

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

No, you don't want to pay attention to the numbers. The first letter tells you what type of program it is, A means Applesoft, which you can run using the run command. The numbers tell you how much space the file is using on the disk. So in your example, all you need to type isRUN GOLFFor now, just disregard the numbers. As for review, once you press Ctrl+L, you need to type a letter, A through X, to put the review curser on one of the twenty-four lines of the Apple screen. Line A is the top, and line X is the bottom. Then you can arrow around.Hope this helps.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=153643#p153643

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

I've been playing around a bit with this emulator, but, unfortunately, I guess I lack basic knowledge of command line systems. I was very grateful when I came across the program that allows you to launch the disks, but now I'm having another problem. Two problems, in fact. When I catalog any of the disks, I'm finding that the Echo synth talks so fast that I can't remember the numbers. I guess it's something I'll have to get used to, as I have my Eloquence set relatively fast. So the problem is, when I do the review command after cataloguing the disk, nothing happens. It says review, but makes this weird kind of farting beeping sound when I try to arrow around, so I can't reread the numbers.Second, when you want to run a game, would the command look like this? Keep in mind that I'm totally butchering the numbering system, but as an example:run a017 golfI don't think I'm doing the spacing correctly, because eve
n when I was sure I had remembered one of the numbers, it gave me a syntax error. Any help would be appreciated.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=153621#p153621

Now, to be fair honest I still had to use that lawncher made by mister Bryan, because definetly although I'm not a tech newbie, I still not able to figure out what the heck is the command prompt, or how to go to it. That isn't too much info for me.OK so its working, I loaded a disk, then suddenly I heard a beep, that told me it was gonna work! Now, the only problem I encountered is that, when echo speech started to talk, it like repeats some stuff. It gave me  some instructions on how to catalog files and stuff, but some tah times it repeepeats things that way, making it a little hard to understand. Any way to fix this? I didn't closed NVDA because, I don't believe it is that intrusive like JAWS, and I just put it to sleep. so maybe closing it is the solution? I dono.I was kinda lost

Actually, after pressing Space to insure you're in review, you should exit. The thing is, the key you pressed to name the state is only seen by the Apple *after* the state is saved, so when you restore from the state, it hasn't seen that keypress yet. Hitting Space while in Review mode, after just having entered Review, which is where you saved the state, should announce the line and column of the real curser, then exit review, so exiting is not necessary. Remember, your request to look at line A hadn't happened yet when state A was saved.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148494#p148494

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Eureka! I've figured out how to effectively play any of the dos 3.3 Eamon adventures. It's a bit cumbersome, but it can be done! First of all, thanks go to Jaybird for posting the new eamon folder with the talking main hall and to Trenton for finding the zipped collection. Now, the best way to go about this is to create an eamon folder within your apple folder where you should extract all dsk files found in the doss33 folder within the zipped archive. This is so you don't confuse the non-bootable games with your bootable disks found in the disks folder especially if you start with the apple front end launcher. You should also copy the eaglist.htm file found at the top level of the archive to your new eamon folder because this is the key to finding your games. Now, put the eamontlk.dsk file in your disks folder and boot it. When you get through registration and press 1 at the main hall to go on an adventure, you'll get a prompt to insert the adventure disk in dr
ive 1 and press c to continue. Follow the ReadMe file instructions for switching disks. Just don't use c as your state key. Example, hit scroll-lock+insert, then shift+f7, then a, then escape to power off and save in state a. Now, suppose you wanted to play Jungles of Vietnam. You'd consult the eaglist file to discover that this game is 59 in the list, so the disk you want is d3_059.dsk. Get to a command prompt and change directories to your apple folder. Example, "cd \apple2" Don't type the quotes. Type "mess apple2ee -flop1 eamon\d3_059.dsk -state a" to power back up where you left off. Press C to begin your adventure. The slightly trickier part comes when your adventure ends or you are killed because at this point, you are asked to make sure your main hall disk is in and then press any key to continue. As I posted before, the trouble is that it may get cranky when you assign your state key. So, the solution is to enter Textalker's review mo
de by pressing control+l. Now, power off and save your state by pressing scroll lock+insert, f7, a, escape. While in review mode, Textalker will intercept that a as a command to start review at line a rather than having apple try to load your main hall disk. You should be back at command prompt, so type "mess apple2ee -flop1 disks\eamontlk.dsk -state a" and press return. Hit spacebar to insure you are still in review mode. Press escape to exit review, and then hit any key as instructed. You should be returned to the main hall without incident. Hope this helps, and happy gaming.AndrewURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148492#p148492

There was indeed an Eamon master disk with textalker preloaded. However, the kicker is having to switch disks to run adventures other than beginners cave. As far as I remember, each new adventure disk would have to go in flopy1 thus necessitating the disk switching approach described in the readme file. The problem is, since the state assignment key is intercepted by the virtual machine, we'd have to experiment and come up with a key that won't cause the master program to try and load beginner's Cave or any other program on disk before the switch can be accomplished. If somebodhy has an image of the old talking master disk, we can always experiment.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148444#p148444

Correction for last post. I wrote scroll lock+Insert, then f7, but it's actually scroll lock+Insert, then Shift+f7. Anyway, I have another audio sample for you. This is an edited and condenced session of the Pick'A'Dilly game I was telling you about. Although it does not talk, I offer it because it's a fine example of pushing speaker clicking to it's limits, and it was just ever so cute. A long time ago, I actually managed to take apart a hangman game by broot force to figure out how they did single tone music routines in Applesoft Basic. Never figured out how this game and probably others managed double tones like this. Anyway, enjoy. Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

The sec demo program needs to be run with the tt13.dsk disk in flopy1. However, this disk indeed does not seem to boot properly. So, the solution is to start up a known bootable disk like dostalk with Textalker set to start automatically. Then, you do the disk switch as described in the Read Me file. Hit scroll lock+Insert, then f7, then 1, then escape. Next, get to a command prompt and change to the apple directory. Example, type cd \apple2. This is why it's a good idea to put this whole emulator package in an apple or apple2 folder within the root directory. Otherwise, it's a pain to use command lines to find it deep withing the windows structure.Next, restart your apple in its saved state with the tt13 disk in drive 1 by typing mess apple2ee -flop1 disks\tt13.dsk -state 1. Press return until it says ready. Then type catalog to make sure the disk is in right. Finally, type run sec demo. Press return and enjoy. Hope this helps. As for that natural sounding custom speech
mode, I'm pretty sure that's a prerecorded phrases setup, and to my knowledge, few if any programs took advantage of this. In any case, I don't think it's a feature that can be accessed by anyone but high level programmers. Could be wrong though.AndrewURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=148205#p148205

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Hi folks. Here's the disk image for a little game I used to play called Pick-A-Dilly. This game is not on speaking terms with Textalker. However, it did utilize apples minimal sound capability with a lot of two toned tunes, and the concept is such that it can be played without speech. After it boots up and does it's little number, you'll hear a high-pitched beep and silence. Turn off capslock for this game. Enter the number for a game type 1-6 and press return. Option 1 is standard game, and 6 is music only. Next, enter number of players 1-6 and press return. Enter names for each player, and the game will start. At this point, each player takes a turn at picking two numbers from 1 to 36. After each number, you'll either hear a little tune, or an error sound if that number is out of play. You pick a second number, and if you hear the same tune you heard before, you've scored a point. There are two guesses per turn unless the error tones are sounded in which case you can keep guessing until a tune is played. Obviously, you'll have to keep score and track of who's turn it is, but at the end of the game, you'll hear a little fanfare. Enjoy, and let me know if you decide to post this on the community Dropbox so I can take it down from mine. Does anyone here remember Word Talk. Do you suppose anyone has a disk image of it, or that Douglas Geofrey now of GW Micro would be ok with releasing it for historical preservation? Also, there was a disk of Echo 2 program  for younger children that contained a fantastic example of using Echo's phoneme mode in the form of a basic program that made Echo sing a rather obnoxious Happy Birthday. Anyone have that lying around somewhere? Thanks, and keep up the good work with this emulator. Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Okay, it seems we need a new launcher. I've had several people complain about the long command line, or just plain not be able to understand it without a lot of help. Here's what I invision this launcher being like.It should use standard Windows dialogs, so as to be usable with any screen reader or even by a sighted person. For this reason, it won't need to use a SAPI voice. It should allow for the selection of disk images for floppy drives 1 and 2, as well as a save state for situations where you need to switch disks and restore from a save state. It should allow for easy navigation of file lists by letter or digit where appropriate, rather than having to arrow around.I invision something like one dialog with five buttons. One selects the image for drive one, another for drive two, a third for the save state, a Go! button, and a Quit button. For the selection dialogs for images/save states, use standard Windows file open dialogs, since the
y already do everything we need. Put it in the disks or sta\apple2ee folder, as appropriate. All file selections should default to no file in that slot, I.E. it shouldn't remember your selections from last time. Given all your selections, the Go! button would construct a command to run the emulator, and launch it. Would anyone be willing to take on this task? What do you think?URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147970#p147970

a search box to type in a model.2.  a list  of catogries and a list of models.there is a menu where you can create catogries and other things and there is a timeline to track a model through its life history.it has potential.I will let you know if I have any more info.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147543#p147543

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Try running directly from the command line. Try this.1. Start, run. Type command and press enter. By command, I mean the literal word "command," not some command you'd type to run the emulator.2. At the command prompt, type cd, a space, then the path to your Apple emulator dorectory. So if it was in c:\stuff\messapple you'd typecd c:\stuff\messapple3. Type the example command line. This ismess apple2ee -flop1 disks\egames.dsk4. You won't be able to copy the error to the clipboard, you'll just have to write it down.5. To exit the command line, type exit and press enter.Hope that helps.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147294#p147294

In the end, they will be probably different than the original, but the content will stay as is.Also we're adding a description for each disk as we go through. Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

HiI am interested.sm.ever...@gmail.com is the address.one thing people have not yet got at is the large ammount of images on the ifarchive and the eamon guild site.the images for prodos and dos 3 as well as the eamon guild site are zipped into 2 small zip file and a 120mb archive in a hunking big rar file. However before I really start grabbing images again after all the shite I had ages ago, we really need to figure some other frontend  than the apple menu we have.Don't get me wrong, for a start it did the trick. But to be honest unless it can be structured its quite crap.Navigating all those images is just a pain to find what you want if you have say 400 images which was what happened to me.ok it works but I had a heck of a time navigating them.also is there any way rather than listing the file but to list what the disk actually is.I mean its ok to get a disk labeled dsu5580-85-0eypoiporetretu.dsk but if I
don't know what the damn thing is I won't know what I am running.is there anyway to improve the frontend.on that note since this thing is opensource I wander if there is any way to improve it for blind users in the fact that you can run in console mode obviously but have a gui where you can load a disk and load other disks into that without going nuts on things.also I'd like an easier way to shut down the emulator,  and a few other things.I am looking at the extra stuff for the emulators, but really I want to see what stuff works and what does not.going slightly ot, has any of the games transelvania, etc been converted into inform or something as I'd like to play some of the if type games that were done on apple as standard frotz files.I have other questions but will probably shove them in another topic unless someone can tell me how to handle writing of inform7 stuff in an email or something, an ide for it and a compiler
, I couldn't desifre what I needed to do in the ifarchive and since I can get sapi access in glulx or inform I figure that is what I will try to write things in.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147223#p147223

Hey,I've made an Apple2E dropbox folder. The emulator, launcher, other utilities and disks are in there, and it is going to grow as we find/make new stuff. A custom dos or prodos disk with a custom shell is planned for now.If Anyone's interested, please reply.Let's make those Apples go beyond what they were designed for!RobURL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147222#p147222

Unfortunately, that probably means Mess is throwing some kind of error, but you're unable to read it before the command line window goes away. Without that error message, I can't help you.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147216#p147216

That's strange. Every disk should start talking within ten or fifteen seconds.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147209#p147209

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Hi,Wo, wo, wo! Slow down a moment there! I didn't do any of the work to get the Echo II emulated. But here's a very brief overview of how it works. The Echo cards use a particular speech chip from Texas Instruments, the TMS5220, to actually generate speech. As it turns out, other computers use this chip as well, so someone decided to create a piece of software to emulate it within MESS, the emulator I'm using. So naturally, it was only a matter of time until someone decided to emulate the Echo cards, since they use the same chip.So as you can see, this is the real deal. This is not a dirty trick, bogus, or a fake using dummy disk images that trigger wav files at appropriate points. This is the real thing. If you run a program that asks for your name, you can enter your real name, whatever it is, and when appropriate, it will spit it right back out at you. In the same situation, randomly mash on the keyboard, and it'll throw a ton of silly-so
unding nonsense at you. No parlor trick using wav files could do that.To answer another question, the software called Textalker, present on every disk I've included, is responsible for converting English text into control signals to be sent to the Echo, and thus, the TMS5220. So the Echo card doesn't even have English phonemes (word sounds) on it, that's all done by the Textalker software.URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147155#p147155

Re: MessApple, Or, The Return Of Apple2E For the VIP!

Hello everyone,Ok, could someone please please give me the technical background to this?1. To my knowledge, the Echo 2 is a card, not a software synth. Is Jayson here responsible for all the hacking of the circuitry to get this to run in the emulator? That's some super technical stuff right there if so! You should be hired by a great company because not many could do that! I mean, you're reverse-engineering a speech chip into software!2. Does the emulator contain the speech data, or the individual disks? I mean, Ive been trying to see and poke around with the emulator and how it works but I'm just not sure. I'm so curious as to this.I'm actually more interested in the technicalities behind this than the games themselves. How do you reverse engineer a speech chip? Maybe I could buy a rom tool (ee prom reader) and reverse engineer my speakout this way? I mean, this just opens the doors for so many things! He actually decompiled a sp
eech chip!I'd be curious to have at least a slight descrpbtion of it all, honestly. URL: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?pid=147144#p147144
