[slim] Automatic switching between two SCs on the same network (SB3)?

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Hello,

I run my standard SqueezeCenter on a ReadyNAS DUO since a year,
primarily because not having to keep any PCs powered on in the house.
It's been working well enough, the slight speed issues with populating
the SB3 interface with long lists (e.g. 'Artist') have been compensated
by the overall ease of setup.

I have just upgraded the main home PC, however, and came to think about
that there might be interesting possibilities for the quad processor
power. I'd therefore like to set up a parallel SC on the PC that would
be used whenever the PC happens to be on. Obviously both SCs need to be
the same version, otherwise the SB3 may upgrade/downgrade its firmware
when switching between the SCs.

Given this, I'm wondering if there's any way to automate the SB3's
switching between the servers? Ideally I'd like the SB3 to use the PC's
SC whenever it's available on the network, but fall back to the ReadyNAS
DUO's when it's not.

Will that be manual switching each time, or could the SB3 be set up to
handle the switch?

TIA,

.brum

[slim] How to get back to Artist instead of Music Library on SB3 user interface

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Hi,

I often listen to several albums in a row by one artist. Currently my
SC and SB3 takes me to the root menu of Music Library when I
navigate out (left arrow on the remote) from the current album after a
while (if done quite soon after going into the album I do get back to
Artist, but not after a while). Given that the Artist list takes
quite some time to populate, this gets tedious.

Is there any way to change this (apparent) default behaviour, so that
left arrow would always navigate one step back/up from where one
currently is?

TIA,

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-09-27 Thread th80

Hi,
The ipeng app is definitely worth its money. But I realised today that
the cover art thumbnails on album level (browsing artists - albums) are
not correct. If I go directly to ipeng themed squeezecenter via safari
then the right album cover is displayed. So at least SqueezeCenter has
the right thumbs for the albums cached.

Could it be that ipeng app has its own cache? I rebuilt my complete
squeezecenter database yesterday and maybe now some ipeng cached thumbs
are pulled by different albums.

How could I fix this in case there is a cache problem on ipeng app?

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread epoch1970

Worked very well for me on ubuntu 8.10 (use the instable repository and
apt-get squeezeboxserver instead of squeezecenter).
I had to migrate all plugins and prefs manually, I don't know if the
release version will do that automatically. Fact is, there are now 2
different directories on my machine, and I can fire 7.4 or 7.3.

I did not create a mysqueezebox.com account, I suppose the accounts
will be migrated by Logi, and creating a duplicate may cause unnecessary
trouble. I don't really care for My Apps anyway, so I'll wait on
Monday.

The web interface seems a lot faster. You will not recognize your
Controller if you have one.

Don't think there is any way to automate server switching. But doing so

Just scroll to Settings Music Source on you SB3 and select which

Re: [slim] Automatic switching between two SCs on the same network (SB3)?

2009-09-27 Thread epoch1970

With the CLI (ie a simple script using telnet or netcat) you can do what
the web interface does; Have a look at the technical information under
the Help link in SC's interface. The CLI command is called connect.
There is a disconnect command as well, but its use case eludes me.

If you want to use power management on the big computer, you should
consider using the srvPowerControl plugin. It does automated SC - SN
switching, for example.

(Right now it looks like you'd need to tweak the plugin to have it do
SC - SC, though.)

2009-09-27 Thread . brum

Thanks for the input!

I guess I'll just go ahead and install SC on the main PC and:

1) see if switching manually feels cumbersome in practice, and
2) see if I can setup the CLI script to control the SC from the main PC
upon powering up and down

On the other hand, here between posting the first message and now I
read up on the upcoming version 7.4. It introduces some more automated
switching between an SC and SqueezeNetwork but only for the radio style
products. That could perhaps be tweaked also, we'll see.

SC 7.4 has a feature to set up multiple remote libraries they don't
have to be particularly remote it's just an ip address . This is also a
workaround for those networks that don't work with the squeezebox server
discovery function .
You can set both servers this way and then go into settings and put
switch library to the home menu , Unsure of how it willl look exactly
as I have only one server.

Yeah, that's why I suggested trying wired. If the issue persists with
wired than your issue is not likely WiFi (especially with a 97% signal
strength).
I'd suggest calling your ISP and router mfr and checking settings on
your router. Something is not right.
If you still have your previous router around I'd try hooking it back
up and see if the problem goes away.

I expect not. I'm pretty sure the automatic switching logic is on the
client/Radio side, written in Lua to SqueezePlay APIs. You should ask
Gordon Harris about SvrPowerControl though. I think your request will be
more common when Touch ships, as it includes a stripped down SBS 7.4

you can't do that with the cables, as you are really just connecting
both the PC and the SB to the same set of speakers.

the first suggestion of using the Wav Input plugin is the only way to
do it. *HOWEVER* you will not be able to synconise the audio and video
because of various buffers, both in your PC and in the SqueezeBox.

SqueezeBoxes simply are not designed for this kind of use.

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread ModelCitizen

I am not at all sure I like what it has done to my controllers. The
controller interface is now quite ugly and ungainly and they don't work
in the same way. The web interface is quicker though.

I think 7.4 is aimed mostly at at the new touch screen devices and
increasing code conformity across the product range. My guess is it has
also been rushed out to support the release of SqueezeRadio.

The controllers seem to have been forgotten about. The clocks are ugly,
the backgrounds dull, the action of the play and center buttons is
confusing and the controllers small screen cluttered with useless icons.
The My Apps and App Gallery take up too much home menu (and seems
like a daft idea anyway, possibly proposed by someone from marketing who
would have preferred to work for Apple), and the alarm does not accept
playlists that use the BBC iPlayer streams.

Personally I'd not upgrade to 7.4 unless you really needed to, were
buying a Squeeze Radio or really like pain. I certainly wouldn't have
done if I'd known what it was going to do to my controllers.

If it has been rushed out for the Radio then it is to be hoped that
Logitec will now concentrate on getting 7.4 to work nicely on the other
devices. Maybe the software will be OK by 7.4.2.

2009-09-27 Thread Mnyb

I do like the new interface, especially in use with squeezecenter.
I think the sbc is a little more stable and don't bounce that much
under some menu's as it could do in the past, I like the context menu's
for info.

I like the icons a drab list of text items is not soo nice in the long
run.

I like the easy library switching.

I'm yet to be convinced that the seamless squeezeboxserver
mysqueezebox.com switching is the right thing to do even if it is a
popular change.

I'm with MC regarding apps they have it's place but 5/6 of whats
considered apps is not applications and services as such they belong
under internetradio where they have been all years prior to this release
shoutcast is NOT an application period.

What is downright incomprehensible is for example the News ticker
application ?how do you use it, what is suposed to hapen you press
play!? on an article, then what ? it is not shown anywhere near you.

The battery is an accessory you have to buy separately. It also comes
with a remote, which I think is the smaller Boom remote.

Logitech is saying 6 hours for battery life. I got almost 11 hours on
my first charge. Take a look in the Squeezebox Radio forum for more

What I'm hoping to get working is a fix with svrpowerctrl. There is an
option: Optional action to take while not idle: that lets you run a
command when the server is active. Is there a command that will
simulate a keystroke or mouse movement. I tried
gnome-screensaver-command -p but it doesn't seem to work. Any other
simple commands that might actually work, or is there more to just
typing in that command to get it to work?

I get a dialog box that asks if I want to connect that SB to the

Apparently first needs cooperation from second to make the change

No, it doesn't switch automatically. I wouldn't exactly call the
integration seamless, but it's not too obtrusive. If you're connected
to SqueezeNetwork and you select My Music then you're prompted to switch
to one of the available local servers. If you're connected to a local

you're prompted to switch to SN.

It mostly works. I'm not sure all of the connection bugs have quite
been ironed out, but we'll see.

Re: [slim] HowTo: Prevent server from suspend/hibernate while Squeezecenter playing?

2009-09-27 Thread Declan Moriarty

You might want to look at Windows: Prevent Standby plugin. The reason
it is for windows is that it uses the Win32::API with the kernel32
command. If you change this command in the Plugin.pm file in the
C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\Slim\Plugin\PreventStandby
directory (this will be in the
../SqueezeCenter/server/Slim/Plugin/PreventStandby directory on Ubuntu).
With the SqueezeCenter directory being where programs are normally
stored in Ubuntu. If you cange the Win32::API command to a linux
command to switch off power management you should be OK. Probably the
best thing to do is to copy the PreventStandby directory to something
like PreventStandbyLinux and make the change to the Plugin.pm file.
Note that there is an install.xml file with xml detailing the plugin
name etc. One of the first lines in this file is an id tag that looks
like this:-

idBFACABFD-6334-4743-95BA-43A60E159560/id

How this is generated I don't know. Would a coppied plugin break if
this line ws coppied? If one got rid of it would the plugin still work?
How was it generated in the first place?

The plugin was wirtten by Julian Neil. He might be able to give
pointers on these matters. If you did copy the plugin it would be
polite to add a revision in the header of the Plugin.pm file stating
that the plugin ws adapted for Ubuntu.

Note that the last line of the install.xml file has:-

targetPlatformWindows/targetPlatform

Note this is the second to last line as the last line has the
/extension tag on it!

You will need to remove Windows from the targetPlatform tag and replace
with Linux.

This presupposes that there is a linux bash shell command to switch off
suspend mode!

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-09-27 Thread Declan Moriarty

It won't work with SqueezeNetwork. DSBridge streams (broadcasts)
spottify over you lan from your PC. Spottify normally runs from your PC
anyway. If you don't use DSBridge you have to use the Wave Input
plugin. DSBridge generates an mp3 stream from anything that uses
DirectSound. It also makes DirectSound sound better! Since
SqueezeNetwork doesn't use your PC you can't use it with Spottify or
DSBridge or Wave Input Plugin. All these things require SqueezeCenter.

[slim] Question about ports

2009-09-27 Thread craigim

My router (Netgear WNR3500) has a 'Quality of Service' setting on it
that allows one to set the priority of certain ports to give them more
or less bandwidth. I would like to set it up so that my Squeezebox gets
high priority when streaming, so that even if I'm backing up my thesis
data to my school server, my music doesn't constantly pause to rebuffer
if I'm listening to Pandora or other streaming radio. Does that
communication happen on port 9000, or is there another port for incoming
streams?

If it matters, I'm running SqueezeCenter 7.3.4 on a Mac Mini with Snow
Leopard.

Streaming audio only uses port 9000 when playing from Squeezecenter so
there's no point enabling it in your router since that traffic doesn't
traverse your WAN. Internet radio can be on any port as dictated by the
station's URL.

Actually, it was happening while I was entering that post. I was
listening to Pandora, synchronizing (both downloading and uploading) a
large directory, and downloading a batch of podcasts (obviously trying
to do too much at once). Furthermore, the activities were taking place
on two different computers, so they were both demanding bandwidth and
Pandora couldn't keep up. It was pausing to rebuffer every 45 seconds

How do I find out what port Pandora is coming in on? If I'm streaming

Re: [slim] Is the latest 7.4 beta close enough?

2009-09-27 Thread epoch1970

IMO, this release makes the Controller a mature product. Frankly I had
stopped caring for this device a while ago.
Now it looks and feels -and actually is I think-, much more solid. I
recently yanked the SBR out of the network, so this might help, but over
the last day I've used it quite a lot, installing / restarting SB
Server, applets, clicking all over.
Reconnect was reliable. Wake from deep sleep is reasonably fast. I
think I've had 2 unexpected reboots, the controller sitting idle,
battery under 50%. Recovery was fast and complete every time.
Still doesn't fly in terms of battery life, but since sleep/wake seems
reliable, the improvement is clear.
IMO the screens are prettier, and album covers look nice, at long last.
I believe this release will be a pleasant surprise for Duet owners.

I despise My music and My apps. I know it's mine, thank you. Why
not My settings, My recent searches... ??

As do I, and everyone else who saw all the MyFoo naming back in the
dot.com boom days.

IMO the screens are a lot prettier, and album covers look nice, at long
 last.
I believe this release will be a pleasant surprise for Duet owners.

Is the 7.4 beta out there now essentially the final -- or will there be
changes made today/Monday? I'm home all day Monday and have time to
install during the day. Or should I wait for the final to be released.

What is the must have feature for you in 7.4? If you don't have one,
I wouldn't rush to be the first on your block to install it. I've been
running 7.4 for months because it was required for hardware testing, but
if you haven't used 7.4 yet and there's nothing in it that you need
pronto, I'd advise waiting for the dust to settle. On more that one
occasion I've seen perfectly fine pre-release versions get mangled by
some last minute fixes to the installation routine or something. Give
it a week or two if you can.

Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.

Will this let you upgrade the firmware by holding down the Brightness
soft-key on the Harmony One? I've had to keep the old remote around
just for the case of firmware upgrades hitherto...

Re: [slim] Question about ports

2009-09-27 Thread seanadams

craigim;461944 Wrote:
Actually, it was happening while I was entering that post. I was
listening to Pandora, synchronizing (both downloading and uploading) a
large directory, and downloading a batch of podcasts (obviously trying
to do too much at once). Furthermore, the activities were taking place
on two different computers, so they were both demanding bandwidth and
Pandora couldn't keep up. It was pausing to rebuffer every 45 seconds
 or so.

It would help to know if your problem is on the downstream or the
upstream side. You probably already know this but streaming radio
requires not only a fixed (usually 128K - small for a broadband link)
amount of download bandwidth, but also a reliable upstream in order for
packet acknowledgements to get back to the source. If you are triggering
packet-shaping on your ISP's side, they may be punishing all your
sessions in a ham-fisted way as you approach your limit.

Also, what protocol are you using to sync? If it is opening multiple
TCP connections then that is unfair to other sessions sharing the same
pipe, so you may want to see if there's an option to limit the number of
connections it uses. That would be getting more to the root of the
problem, and if it works would be better than throttling.

Normally TCP behaves well in situations like this. For example if you
have a 1Mbps link then you should be able to have six or seven other
bulk downloads going simultaneously before your radio is affected.
However if you have extremely limited upload bandwidth then that could
be a harder problem to deal with.

How do I find out what port Pandora is coming in on? If I'm streaming a
radio station and the port isn't specified, does that mean it's coming
 in on port 80?

I think so. The only problem there is differentiating pandora traffic
from other HTTP bulk traffic which would be low priority. Can you do it
by LAN-side IP address?
