Michael Good, current V.P. of technology, is staying on, which is a good
thing.

As to dumping Karen VanDerBosch, I must say that the releases of Finale
which have come during her tenure have not been the best, so that might
not be a bad thing. Just reading the complaints recently about people
having to do some work in 2012 then move to 2014 for other work to avoid
the 2012 bugs and then having to revert back to 2012 to avoid the 2014
bugs makes me wonder whether MakeMusic even has a debugging department
any more.

After this merger with TrainingPeaks? The "c" release may work only if
you're using Finale on a notebook while cross-training for a Ironman
triathlon!

I sure hope that Daniel Spreadbury and the development team at Steinberg
get their notation product to market soon -- What with Sibelius's
unstable future as part of Avid and now this merging of notation
software with athletic training software (how can that possibly
succeed?!?) I am very fearful for the future of notation software.

Maybe newly unemployed notation software people will start to put their
skills to use to improve MuseScore to spite their former employers!

I sure hope they let him continue to work on improving Finale! I hope

Re: [Finale] MakeMusic joins Peaksware

2014-08-07 Thread David H. Bailey
The first press release mentions that PeaksWare's program TrainingPeaks
has something to do with endurance training -- I think that we veteran
Finale users know a lot about endurance training, given all the
long-standing bugs we've had to endure as well as the new ones that have
been introduced with each new release.

So in that regard nothing should change. :-)

Seriously, though, I'm not quite sure what benefits an athletic training
assistance company can bring to a music notation program or a music
accompaniment program. I can see how there might be some advantage in
the training field for SmartMusic ("How To Train For a Week-Long
Wagner-Fest" or some such) but for music notation?

I hope that the new corporate umbrella thing will allow the MakeMusic
developers adequate development dollars to fix the problems while moving
ahead into the future.

Only time will tell.

By "won't insert measures" bug do you mean it crashes when you insert
(exactly) one measure? I used to have that problem, but since the last
Fin12 update I rarely if ever see it. And when I did, all I needed to do
was insert more than one and delete the extras.

I'm also avoiding Fin14. Not enough there to tempt me to put up with the

Re: [Finale] MakeMusic joins Peaksware

2014-08-06 Thread Chuck Israels
I'm going to pop in here just to say that I have had problems with 2014 that
make it unusable for me. Two things continue to happen: Finale loses its
ability to undo, and I have navigation issues that seem insurmountable.
(Delayed response in horizontal navigation and then over shoot - impossible for
me to control and a complete deal breaker.) MM support has been kind and their
best people have spent hours with me - even screen sharing, but in the end,
they don't solve the problems. They have some of my files that exhibit this
behavior, so I assume they are working on it, but even in what seems to me
should be frank conversation, they don't admit to the extend of the bugs.

I am surprised that no one else here has experienced similar 2014 behavior,
because I don't think my set up is unusual. My engraver friends won't touch
2014, and I am simply counting it as wasted money and waiting for next year.

2012 does what I need, although there is room for things to be easier and
better.

My 2C.

Chuck

I would keep using 2012, too, except for the occasional "won't insert
measures" bug which is really frustrating when it pops up.

Here's a quote from the Sibelius blog that makes me think their long term
plans are in the education and learning worlds and not the professional
musician world. I'm going to be hanging on to 2012 for dear life :)
