Deactivate not available for Framemaker 10

Hi Tammy,
Check your user ID permissions on the laptop. I believe Administrator
permissions are required to Deactivate.

Hope that helps!

HI All,

I have two Win 7, 64 bit machines (one desktop and one laptop) both with
Framemaker 10 installed, all patched and current. I need to deactivate the
instance of FM 10 on the laptop so that I can install and activate it on a
second laptop. When I open the instance of FM 10 on the desktop, the
Deactivate option is available from the Help menu. Great, but I do not want
to deactivate this instance. When I open the instance of FM 10 on the
laptop, the Deactivate option is grayed-out and no matter what I do, I
cannot get to become enabled. I have closed and reopened FM multiple times,
I have opened and closed existing FM documents, I have created and saved new
FM documents, but no joy.

I can't deactivate the FM instance on my desktop . . .it has to be the one
on the laptop.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

TIA,

TVB

Scrolling Pages Issue

2015-01-22 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Denis,
In response to your scrolling issue, I have discovered that having the Insets
pod open dramatically affects performance. I am also running FM 12, Windows 7,
64-bit, i7 processor, 8GB. Just tried it to be sure about which pod it was and
it forced the program to stop responding completely.

Perhaps it is this pod or another one like it that is doing similar activity
behind the scenes? Hope this helps!

PDF Query from Denis Daly

2014-10-17 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
In response to this question, I have also experienced a similar issue:

1. I use FrameMaker 12.0.3.424, Acrobat XI Pro 11.0.09.

2. Using Save As PDF from FrameMaker to generate PDF from book file. In the
PDF Setup Dialog, using CMYK option generates a PDF but colors are muted.
Using RGB generates PDF with good colors, but one image appears as gray. This
image is a JPG, imported by reference and also used in other documents. Image
appears in PDF if CMYK is used.

3. I posted my question to the Adobe Communities forum on October 2nd, but to
date my question has not been answered. I asked whether this was a bug or
another setting that needed to be adjusted.

To get around my problem, I actually deleted the one figure and replaced it
(but that would not be the desired solution, of course). I haven't experienced
this scenario again (yet).

Also, for more background on my setup, most of these FM files were created in
Frame 8 and I just recently purchased a new laptop and Frame 12. This problem
was not happening in Frame 8, (Acrobat XI Pro on both systems, so no change
there).

Someone posted to the adobe forum again within the last few days and another
person responded today with the same problem.

Hopefully, we will all get some answers soon! :-)

Hi,

My name is Denis Daly. I have recently started using FrameMaker.

I have had an odd issue today. I saved an individual chapter as a PDF and about
40% of the images were not present. They are available in the 'Graphics' folder.

I resaved and the same thing happened.

I then saved a third time but selected RGB instead of CYMK; all images were
present.

I am using FM 12 with the recent update installed.

Can anyone explain this behaviour, please?

Kind regards,
Denis Daly

Any Issues Using Acrobat Pro XI with TCS 1, FM8?

2013-07-30 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Fellow Framers,

Is anyone successfully using the TCS1 package (or Frame 8) with Acrobat XI?
Are there any gotchas or known issues I need to watch out for?

I am using TCS 1 (FM8) with Acrobat Pro 9 on a Windows 7, 64-bit PC (recently
upgraded) with no troubles creating FM to PDF output.

However, Microsoft 2010 products are not compatible with Acrobat Pro 9 (e.g., I
cannot get metadata from a Word doc into the PDF). This is a known
incompatibility and the resolution is to upgrade to Acrobat X or XI.

I will not be upgrading or changing the TCS setup. The plan is to upgrade the
Acrobat only at this time.

Thank you in advance for sharing any insights and experiences!

Many thanks to several of you who have responded so far (some on and off list).

Fred, I agree that this list is relevant to the authors only and does not have
an effect on the document. In my years past, when it happened, I simply
dismissed it and moved on. I am pursuing it now because it is appearing in my
template, which means it will likely be present in every future document
created from that template. Another reason is because I am gearing up to C
very, very hopefully -- be training other SME writers who will all be new to
Frame. I’d like it very much if these new learners do not encounter this
”distraction” while they are learning to use Frame.

Michael, I did verify that the elements are listed in Document Order (not
sorted by ID) in the X-Ref dialog. This is a good thing to watch for if someone
gets confused because they changed the sort order.

As always, this group is terrific!

Why does it matter what order is used in the Cross-Reference dialog? That list
is merely a convenience to authors when when new cross-references are being
added to a document. You are the only person who ever sees that list, and its
order has absolutely no effect on the final document.

Cross-references are point-to-point links that depend on the (semi-)unique

Fellow Framers,

Structured Frame 8, on XP, been clicking along just fine, but now experiencing
a quirk I’ve seen in years past. I am the only one working on these documents,
so I assume it’s a pilot error on my part.

What causes a table element to appear out of order in the Cross-Reference
dialog? After inserting new tables, I go to create new cross references and see
elements listed in the X-Ref dialog as follows:

Table 1
Table 4 (was a new table I added)
Table 3 (was a second new table I added)
Table 2
Table 5 (was three before I got into this)

I have tried numerous things like moving them around, deleting and recreating,
and so forth. What is it that I am doing to cause this so that I can remedy it?
What’s happening under the hood to get these references out of order?

Thanks in advance and Happy Friday!

Subject: Table Elements Out of Order in Cross-Reference Dialog
Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2011 18:30:57 +
Fellow Framers,

Structured Frame 8, on XP, been clicking along just fine, but now experiencing
a quirk I??ve seen in years past. I am the only one working on these
documents, so I assume it??s a pilot error on my part.

What??s happening under the hood to get these references out of order?

Thanks in advance and Happy Friday!

Need Advice on Upgrade Strategies for FM and Acrobat

2011-02-09 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Fellow Framers,

I need your advice on how to best recommend a strategy for new Frame and
Acrobat software purchases/licensing/upgrades/maintenance contracts, etc. I
apologize for the lengthy email with many questions, but I'm sure I'm still
overlooking some important points.

SOME HISTORY
I currently have the TCS1 package FM 8 (structured), Acrobat 9, Robohelp,
Captivate, on Windows XP SP3. For 2+ years, I've been the only FM user here
(everyone else uses Word). Frame's strong points are helping me to develop and
maintain large amounts of new technical documentation. So, I've won some
support for it, which I am really thrilled about.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Now there is an interest in purchasing FM for possibly 3-4 SMEs who will be
drafting documentation for my project. These folks perform engineering and
testing functions (writing is not their primary task), but their manager sees
value/potential in using Frame vs. Word and wants to gain momentum with it.

THOUGHTS / QUESTIONS

-- We should all use the latest Frame (10). Should I upgrade Frame only on my
PC, or should I really consider the full TCS3 upgrade? I already have
Photoshop. The other folks don't need Robohelp/Captivate, so TCS3 is overkill
for them.

-- All of us need a compatible Acrobat (I have no idea what to expect if we
install Frame 10 on one of these laptops with an older version of Acrobat).
Should I recommend the latest Acrobat for everyone just to be safe?

-- Are there some reliable, yet also fairly reasonable
licensing/upgrade/maintenance strategies to keep us all in sync?

-- What's beneficial to do now in case we should add Frame users again down the
road?

-- What gotchas, headaches, and other things must I think about before I jump
into the deep end??

Since day one, I've not had any problems with my TCS1 setup, so I'm quite
nervous about introducing new software versions without introducing unwanted
special effects. :-)

I also know that there will be a learning curve and I'll have to train the
others, create cheat sheets, and so forth. And, I must get familiar with the
new interface, too. I'm confident I can manage these things. Also, I've made
every effort to keep the template streamlined and simple, so hopefully, that
will help, too.

THANKS IN ADVANCE for all words of wisdom and experience in this area!! :)

Adobe 3D Reviewer - Viewing a Section

2010-08-18 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Framers,

My apologies for the off-topic post. I'm using the Adobe 3D Reviewer utility
(came with Acrobat Pro-Extended in TCS1, Windows XP) to create views of ProE
models. When I use the section tool to cut into a part, the cut edges are
displayed as a shell and not as a solid part and I cannot figure out where the
problem is coming from. I've solicited the help of an internal mechanical
engineer and it appears that the problem may be related to how the software is
working.

Has anyone encountered this before and found a solution? Thanks in advance!

Thanks to Richard Combs for the manual workaround and to Rick for info about
FrameScript options. I will consider these further if it turns out that the

Hi Jasmine,

This is a known issue with FrameMaker/Acrobat. I have a FrameScript script
that allows you to unlock the text insets before creating the PDF, which
effectively solves the link problem in the resulting PDF. After you create
the PDF, the script relocks the text insets. (The ability to unlock and lock
text insets is not exposed in the FrameMaker interface.) The cost for the
script is $80. If you don't have FrameScript, I can sell you a FrameScript
license and the script for $200. Please let me know if you have any
questions or comments. Thank you very much.

Hello Framers,

Structured Frame 8.0 (TCS1), XP, importing procedures written in text insets
into multiple books. I found today that any cross-references within the text
insets are not getting picked up as active cross-references in the book PDF.
Any other normal X-REFs are working fine. No X-REF errors when updating the
book in Frame. All X-REFs are updating correctly (all numbering is correct).
Just can't click these x-ref links in the PDF to jump to the destination
being referenced.

I tried looking at the PDF job options, but didn't see anything obvious. Any
ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Frame X-REFs in Text Inset not Active in Book PDF

2010-07-21 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Framers,

Structured Frame 8.0 (TCS1), XP, importing procedures written in text insets
into multiple books. I found today that any cross-references within the text
insets are not getting picked up as active cross-references in the book PDF.
Any other normal X-REFs are working fine. No X-REF errors when updating the
book in Frame. All X-REFs are updating correctly (all numbering is correct).
Just can't click these x-ref links in the PDF to jump to the destination being
referenced.

I tried looking at the PDF job options, but didn't see anything obvious. Any
ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Inserting Frame Hypertext Links to PDFs

2010-06-15 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Framers,

Structured Frame 8.0 (TCS1).  I'm trying to setup hypertext links (or a
cross-references, if it can be done that way) to PDFs that may or may not exist
yet. I want to emulate what you can do in Word, which is Insert Hyperlink,
tell it what text to display, and tell it what address to look for. Convert the
Word doc to PDF and the hyperlink works when the referenced PDF is present.
Remove the PDF, link doesn't work; replace the PDF, link works.

What is the best way to accomplish this in Frame?

-- FILE-A.pdf references FILE-B.pdf and needs to have a relative link that will
allow the reader to jump to FILE-B.pdf.

-- In the Frame source file (FILE-A.fm), I want to create the hyperlink now so
that I can release the FILE-A.pdf, knowing that the link will not work until
FILE-B.pdf is available.

-- I then expect that when FILE-B.pdf is placed in the proper directory as
specified in the hypertext, everything should work.

I can create the hypertext in a structured or unstructured way, so I don't
think I have any questions about that part.

I'm trying the instructions in Scriptorium's Frame 8 book, which indicate that
first one must identify the target, and then create the link, both steps using
the Special Hypertext dialog. I've stepped through it, but I think I'm
overlooking something basic that I should already know.

THANKS in advance for any input! J

RESOLVED: Inserting Frame Hypertext Links to PDFs

2010-06-15 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
All, a few hours after my post, I figured out the answer. Here's how I'm going
to do it:

1. Identify text that will become the hypertext (e.g., FILE-B_NAME).

2. Apply hyperlink format (element in my case) to text making it underline
and blue.

3. Position cursor within hyperlink element immediately before the first
letter of said text.

4. Select SpecialHypertext. In Element Tag field, select Hypertext (which
is my element name) (also can select Unstructured).

5. In the Command field, select Open Document.

6. Syntax field pre-fills openlink command. Syntax for my example is:
openlink FILE-B_NAME.pdf

7. Click New Hypertext Marker. Dialog appears stating designated file is
not a Frame file. Click OK.

8. Created PDF and tested hyperlink with PDF named as stated in Open
Document command syntax.

If there are other ways or suggestions to do this, or perhaps to set up an
element that automates a few of the above steps, I'd love to hear it.
Otherwise, I'm able to move on to the next challenge of the day!

Thank you again. Have a great day! J

RE: Page Numbering Format (# of ##) in an FM Book

2010-06-09 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Thank you to all who responded. I didn't think about using a cross-reference
(DUH)!

BTW, I forgot to mention that I use structured Frame. Here's what I did:

EDD - Added new element: EndOfBook

Paragraph format: EndOfBook (2pts. White text). Explanatory Text appears in
Cross-Ref dialog.

Cross Reference format: EndOfBook (building block $pagenum)

Insert unstructured cross-reference on master page (no need for a new X-REF
element tag at this time).

I'm still tinkering with my remaining master pages, but I've gone far enough to
test this and it works.

Marvelous!

Hi Jasmine

I have done this in a small book. I used the following method to set up the
Page # of ## in a book with several files. It assumes you are using
continuous page numbering throughout the book.

1. On the last page of the last file in the book, insert a new paragraph
and give it a new para format (eg LastPage). In my book I have actually put
some explanatory text in this para so I know what it is and set the colour to
white so it doesn't show. You may or may not wish to do this because this text
will end up in the PDF and will be searchible even though it is invisible.
2. Set up the page numbering in the footer of each file as Page # of
[Xref]. # is the normal Current Page variable, and [Xref] is a cross
reference to the LastPage paragraph. Set the format of this cross reference to
use the $pagenum building block and give the format a meaningful name.
3. Import the new Xref format to all files.

When you update the book your page numbering will be updated to reflect the
total number of pages in the book. You do have to remember that the LastPage
para is there and what it's for, though. And remember to make sure it is
always on the last page of the book.

Hope this helps

Page Numbering Format (# of ##) in an FM Book

2010-06-08 Thread Graham, Jasmine S
Hello Framers,

I need to setup page numbering formatted as Page # of ## in a book with
several files. The Page Count variable (building block $lastpagenum), pulls
the last page number of the current file, not the last page number in the book.
So, it's correct in the last file of the book, but not the others.

Is there any way to set up a variable that will read the last page number in
the book? Or, is there another way to accomplish this without setting it
manually after I generate the final book?

TIA!

Mike and Rick, thank you both for your responses. I just spoke with Rick to
step through the process and successfully got this to work in my document. Rick
mentioned that I may be able to use variables in the code. I will try that as
well.

You all are terrific! Happy Friday!

Hi Jasmine,

You can do this with a Postscript Code text frame containing a pdfmark
operator. A Postscript Code text frame is just a regular text frame that has
the Postscript Code property set from the Object Properties dialog. When that
checkbox is selected, any text in the frame is treated as if it were postscript
code. Here is sample code that should get you started:

/pdfmark where {pop} {userdict /pdfmark /cleartomark load put} ifelse

[ /Custom_Acrobat_Property_Name (This is the value of the custom property.)

/DOCINFO pdfmark

 Fellow Framers,

My setup is TCS1 on Windows XP (Frame 8.0, structured, with Adobe 9.0 Pro
Extended). I need to set up custom properties in the PDF (Document Properties
Custom Tab). I want to create these properties as attributes in the Frame
book file so that I can automatically write them to the PDF.

I know how to set up Frame's File Info dialog, which writes to the PDF
Document Properties Description tab, but I must also have additional
metadata on the Document Properties Custom Tab.

Anyone out there doing something like this today? Ideas on how I can get this
to work? All ideas and input are appreciated. Thanks in advance!
