CD Extra disks on atapi-cd
Hi. I've found that -current kernel couldn't mount CD-Extra disks on ATAPI CD drives. The patch was introduced to FreeBSD lists several times since Apr 1999. Our patch allow at least Latin-1, Latin-2, Russian, and Japasese users to read CD with native filenames also until proper I18N will be introduced. Moreover, the patch already have KLD ability and easy extendability. Your workaround never deserve of official audit in comparison to ours. Suppose a file which name contains multilingual characters. Think Japanese researchers of Russian literatures. The Microsoft Word document files about their works may have such complexed filenames. I have to emphasize that > it's a temporary solution until we will have iconv support in kernel. *PLEASE* be careful about filename I18N. 1. Joliet extension The Joliet extension are built on Unicode basis, and is the "multilingual" filesystem. We can found CDs which contain files named by all of English, French, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese languages. So charset conversion per mount is not sufficient. 2. FAT The current FAT filesystem use Unicode, however, the FAT filesystem is not "multilingual" because of local codepages used for the conventional 8.3 names. Thus, per-mount codeset conversion are sufficient, but additional codepage conversion is needed. This conversion is currently achieved by 128bytes tables specified in mount_msdos(8), but this way have no consideration about multibyte codesets such as CJK. 3. Relation to userland applications Currently, conversion table between Unicode and local charset are widely needed and implemented, for such as the Joliet extension, the FAT filesystem, TrueType rasterizers, WWW browsers, and so on. We should share the tables as possible for their consintency. So the ideal solution to code conversion are not in-kernel table but userland shared library. Therefore, filename code conversion should also be done in userland as possible. 4. Rough idea of me My preliminary idea to the filesystem I18N: * filenames recorded on Unix filesystems (e.g. FFS, MFS) use an arbitrary codeset, for example Unicode. * interface between kernel and userland should use filesystem-safe encoding, for example UTF-8. * userland applications can convert from/to the user-requested charsets, such as latin-2, koi8, and euc-jp, using shared library. * the Joliet extension and UDF, which based on Unicode, need no in-kernel conversion, in case Unix filesystems use Unicode. * the FAT filesystem, which use both Unicode and conventional codepages, requires in-kernel conversion in order to write the conventional 8.3 names. Any ideas? -- Motomichi Matsuzaki <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Dept. of Biological Sciences, Grad. You can correct hints interactively on /boot/loader. You can override hints by making /boot/device.hints also. B-2: suitable hints ... everything goes OK You can override hints by /boot/device.hints. Currently, 'make install' will be aborted in every case above, but this treatment is suitable only for case A. And it would be technically possible to limit this treatment to case A. Hi. I made a patch for /sys/boot/i386/libi386/biosdisk.c (attached). IPv6 trouble
Hi. I built and installed current-2301 today, and use INET6 enabled kernel *without* ipv6_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf. (this probably is the default situation made by the installer) I receive mails by ports/mail/fetchmail from my ISP, then re-send them to local SMTP(sendmail). But, today, it doesn't work. I upgraded ports/mail/fetchmail, but nothing changes. fetchmail says: 1 message for mzaki at mail.server.of.isp (566 octets). reading message 1 of 1 (566 octets) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from mail.server.of.isp fetchmail: Query status=SMTP and in syslog: /kernel: Connection attempt to TCP ::0001:25 from ::0001:1129 I suspect, * fetchmail inquire "localhost" to resolver * resolver returns "::1" because there is the entry in /etc/hosts * fetchmail try to connect port 25 on "::1" * sendmail listen on only port 25 of inet4, not of inet6 * trial failes, and fetchmail giving up Then, I commented out "::1" from /etc/hosts, works fine. Unicode support for Joliet CDs
Unicode support patch for -current and -stable is now updated. See http://triaez.kaisei.org/~mzaki/joliet/ # It's not intended to merge into the repository. CHANGES: * By default, filenames are encode by UTF-8, not converted to any charset. * Add support for ISO-8859-2 and KOI8-R. * Add kernel config option CHARSET_*. The UNICODE routines consist of these files. charset/charset.c mandatory iso8859-1.c recommended euc-jp.coptional<-- BIG! the object file has 53k bytes encoding/encoding.c mandatory euc.c optional The 'mandatory + recommended' object size is no more than 5 kbytes. The GENERIC kernel does not require necessarily the euc-jp support or any other charsets. I think the iso8859-1 support alone is sufficient for GENERIC. The custom kernels can have the euc-jp support through the CHARSET_EUC_JP and ENCODING_EUC kernel configure option. (They are currently defined at the top of the source files.) > Also, it adds a sysctl node, isn't that so? Directly under vfs, > even, so it applies to all filesystems. Ideally, this should apply > on a per-mount basis, and not even be in a sysctl. Yes. sysctl is not the best idea. I think the charset preferences should apply on per-process basis ideally. The operator mounts some disks. The users access the disks in their own preferred charset. The UNICODE is a multiligual codeset, so we shoud not suppose any specific charset on the disk. Therefore, a per-mount basis is not enough. If the routines can refer the users' environment 'LC_CTYPE', it is fine idea. But it can't, I suppose. -- Motomichi Matsuzaki Dept. of Biological Science, Fuculty of Sciences, Univ. of Tokyo, Japan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majord...@freebsd.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message
Re: kern/5038: FreeBSD can't read MS Joliet CDs.
Hey! I've add UNICODE support to the Joliet patch. It contains few charsets now, but to add other charsets is very easy. Currently, iso8859-1 and euc-jp is included. Mixture of Joliet/RockRidge Extension is also available, however untested. How to use: 1. Pick up the patch from the URL. http://triaez.kaisei.org/~mzaki/joliet/joliet.unicode.patch.gz It contains huge table which provides conversion from unicode character to euc-jp, so that the gzip'ed size is 36k. So I give up to attach the patch to this mail. 2. Apply the patch to the source tree. #cd /usr/src #zcat /tmp/joliet.unicode.patch.gz|patch -p1 3. Make and install new mount_cd9660(8) #cd /usr/src/sbin/mount_cd9660 #make; make install 4. Reconfig and reinstall your kernel and reboot. 5. Tell your kernel the charset you prefer. #sysctl -w vfs.charset=iso8859-1 Currently, only 'none', 'iso8859-1' and 'euc-jp' is available. none : The filenames are assumed to have 8bit character ONLY. This is not recommended. iso8859-1 : 8bit characters. All 16bit characters (include russian, greek, chinese, etc.) are replaced with numerical ('0'-'9'). euc-jp: Japanese characters. This corresponds to the userland locale 'ja_JP.EUC'. All characters unable to express are replaced with numerical ('0'-'9'). How to use other charsets: 1. Look at the /sys/isofs. charset and encoding directories are added. For Europians, to make new charset/*.c is sufficient. For Asians (Chinese, Korean, Japanese and so on), to make new encoding/*.c is also required. charset/*.c should contains Code Conversion Table. Currently, only 'UNICODE -> local charset' conversion is needed. (in future, reverse conversion may needed for msdosfs and ntfs.) encoding/*.c should contains multibyte encoding routines. These are subset of rune(3) at /usr/src/lib/libc/locale/ At least, MSKanji is required for ja_JP.SJIS, BIG5 for zh_TW.BIG5, also UTF-8 for all UNICODE locale. 2. Add new file entries to /sys/conf/files 3. Reconfig and reinstall your kernel and reboot. More documents are now scheduled in some days at the URL http://triaez.kaisei.org/~mzaki/joliet/ -- Motomichi Matsuzaki Dept. of Biological Science, Fuculty of Sciences, Univ. of Tokyo, Japan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majord...@freebsd.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message

My patch: * character in page 00 is converted to ASCII(+ISO-8859-1) * character in other pages is replaced by '?' Byung's patch: * character in page 00 is converted to ASCII(+ISO-8859-1) * character in other pages is passed as is For example, suppose to be a file on Joliet CD, which filename is encoded as [ 0041 0042 0043 2525 3030 3535 ] in Unicode. The kernel applied my patch shows it to userland via readdir(2) as (41)(42)(43)(3F)(3F)(3F) ... "abc???" The kernel applied Byung's patch shows it as (41)(42)(43)(25)(25)(30)(30)(35)(35) ... "abc%%0055" Byung reported, > With this patch, I was able to see long file names and > non-english characters(such as korean&chinese) so i believe it > does support unicode as long as your locale is set correctly. But with my locale 'ja_JP.EUC' (which is the major in Japan on *BSD box), these strings make no sense. To see filenames which contain Japanese characters, kernel should convert it to EUC(JP). Another possible answer is encoding to UTF-8, however, I don't know UTF-8 terminal compliant with Japanese. -- Motomichi Matsuzaki Dept. of Biological Science, Fuculty of Sciences, Univ. of Tokyo, Japan To Unsubscribe: send mail to majord...@freebsd.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-current" in the body of the message

Each CJK character is replaced with '?' and file identity is lost e.g. both 'abc' and 'xyz' are shown '???', and an access to '???' is always directed for 'abc'.
