apache make error sed: 1: "s,%%FTPUSERS%%,$FreeBSD ...":

2006-03-01 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Hello I am running Apache.0.53 on FreeBSD 4.11 and get this error when
trying to stop Apache

apachectl stop
/usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libexpat.so.5" not found,
required by "httpd"

So i searched archives and googled everywhere to find a solution but
have discovered nothing. So did what i thought made sense and set out
to reinstall a freshly cvsuped version of Apache. Things have changed
alot since i last updated Apache. The Apache2 port has been replaced
with the Apache20 port. I cannot just do a simple make deinstall and
reinstall to update never the less determined to solve my problem I try
a make configure on new Apache20 port which will update me to version
2.0.55. However much to my dismay the port spits out this error I tried
a make and got the same error

config.status: include/ap_config_auto.h is unchanged
config.status: executing default commands
sed: 1: "s,%%FTPUSERS%%,$FreeBSD ...": bad flag in substitute command: 'v'
*** Error code 1

Stop in /usr/ports/www/Apache.

I think the two errors must be related some how but am at a loss on how
to fix them HELP!!!

ps I have recently installed webmin and virtualmin to simplify my life
and think it backfired. I believe virtualmin may have caused this all this.

After editing the wdm-config, you need to restart wdm.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will kill the X server and re-read all the configs.

I did that

can you please post your wdm-config and a list of your package installed
? (or make them available online)

I have tried to attached them but my mail server is giving me grief with
attachment right now.

the relevant section in my config:
---
! It will run .xsession
!DisplayManager*wdmWm: None
---
which means it will read .xsession in my home.
my .xsession is :

$ cat ~/.xsession
## RUNNING bbkeys from Blackbox because it feels more powerful
## to avoid conflicts with fluxbox's key mgr, I emptied .fluxbox/keys
bbkeys &
xscreensaver -no-splash &
fbpager -w &
#wmwifi &
sleep 1 && gkrellm -w &
#fbdesk &
torsmo &
tilda &
skype &
gaim &
fluxbox
---

though I realise that I should be simply running startfluxbox and adding
all the other cmds to ~/.fluxbox/startup

I do not have an .xsession file in my home dir in fact i do not seem to
have an .xsession or an xsession file anywhere on my system just
Xsession see below

disk errors help!!

2005-10-06 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
My freebsd 4.11 system has been subjected to a power failure and seems
to have many disk errors something about soft updates and not being able
to read certain sectors it comes up with the standard single user pick
your shell command and tells me to run fsck manually. I have run it
several times but the system keeps comming with ad0s4 marked dirty which
is my /usr partition. Sometimes i get a resetting device ata0 timeout
error. What should i do of course i have no current backups for this
system and the most important thing is retrieving my users data it would
be great if i could get the system to boot up but if i have to reinstall
no biggy as long as i can get most of my data back.

For the record, that is not true. They can coexist, and there are

Re: ipf not working correctly???

2005-06-21 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Ok thank you for your reply I have followed the newest handbook to the
letter did you read my email?? which part is incorrect the ipf stuff is
comment out of my kernel and also turned off in rc.conf.I have had
to re enable ipfw in the kernel to get natd and my server to work
properly again. If i remove firewall and ipdivert options my server
will no longer route packages to my LAN. I will recompile my kernel one
more time with no firewall option at all and comment out all the natd
and ipfw lines from rc.conf just to humor you and because i am desperate
for this to work. Note i have already tried this but will try again.

also you can have both enabled however i do only want ipf for now.

Remove all "firewall" and ipf statements from the kernel and
recompile or just use the generic kernel. Then remove all "firewall"
and "natd' statements from rc.conf.

Then go back and read the FreeBSD handbook section on firewalls it's
been updated to give detailed instructions on what to do. Follow
then to the letter and you will be all set.

Hey, Ryan!
Dump is not able to work on directories. The "atom" for dump is
an entire filesystem. As a convenience, you can give dump the
mount point, but it actually bypasses the normal filesystem
code and talks to the device file directly - it just looks up
the mount point to get the device. It understands
the filesystem datastructures on its own and interprets them
as much as necessary to build it's directory and datablock
list.
So - if a directory isn't a mount point - if it doesn't
show up in a "df" or "mount" list as a type "ufs" and "local",
dump can't operate on it.
Dump is create, really awesome at what it does - but it doesn't
do anything else. :) It is really different from tar or cpio or
any of the other programs that go THROUGH the filesystem code
rather than bypassing it.

failover for http

2005-01-07 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Does anyone know of a good package or howto that covers the failover
topic?? I have found lots of stuff on google but hard to know if these
progs do what i need. There has to be something in the ports that
archive this spread with wackmole maybe seems very complex and not even
sure it will suit my needs???

I have 2 server in different locations with different ip's is it
possible to have these servers back each other up? I have read ip on
the cheap from the Unix hacks book but it does not seem to cover the
different location and ip issue.

Please a point in the right direction would be great.

Re: packet pass through vs ftp -- performance weirdity

2004-09-16 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Happened to me once needed to set the the speed of the nic card in
rc.conf can not remember how to do it but it is in the man rc.conf page
and solved my similar problem. Looks something like this if i can recall

ifconfig_xl0="inet 209.155.173.22 something about manually setting the
speed and mode of the card "

for me it had to do with the card not negotiating it parameters properly
and i had to beat it into submission with manual overrides. glanced
through the rc.conf man page but it is to long for me deal with right
now the setting are in there somewhere.

Gary Aitken wrote:
I'm seeing some weird network performance I don't understand.
If I sit at an NT box and using a web browser, go through my fbsd 4.10
firewall to someplace out in the world through a slow dsl connection,
I get download speeds of 20KB - 45KB/sec, pretty much the max my DSL
connection can deliver.
The nt box is connected to the fbsd box over a 10Mb/sec full duplex
crossover cable for test purposes.
If I ftp (shell window) or use a browser to ftp from the fbsd box
itself, I see a max speed of something like 8KB/sec.
This makes absolutely no sense to me, given the relative speeds of the
network connections, which I would have thought was the limiting
factor.
The fbsd box is a p200, 128M, single 7200rpm 9.4ms seagate ultra scsi
drive, 10MB/sec negotiated xfr rate. Data used for testing was ~8MB
file in /var partition, don't know how badly fragmented.
Is passing packets through the firewall and ipfw rules that much
faster than an ftp access?
Ideas for where to look for what's slowing things down?
Thanks,
Gary

Re: apache permission problem please help

2004-08-25 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Ok as anyone reading this thread knows i have huge mess on hands. Have
found that if i set the all the users dir to 701
chmod -R 701 home
then go into each users home directory and set the the www directory to 751
cd /home/user
chmod -R 751 www
then change the group permissions of this folder to www
chown -R :www www
apache works again
This is all great but what a pain there must be an easier way as i have
many users and do not want to go through this process for all of them.
This seems like a secure method i think or would the /usr/local/www/user
with a symlink be more secure. I run a stock freebsd system and do
not really what users poking around have heard about chrooting as an
another option for this I am very confused need some guidance.
side note
I also have all my users in one directory and it is getting large would
like to move some of them into new directories like maybe webclients and
mailclients but i moved one and had to modify the permissions all over
again and update the password database and oh what a nightmare will take
me days.

A better approach would be to set each users home dir itself to 700
permissions, not necessarily all the files and directories in each users
dir. Are you using a httpd.conf directive such as
to allow users to publish files from
their home dir, or are you putting sym links in the web root?

Seems simple enough however when i try to logon to my SMTP server i get

4.9 using cyrus-sasl/saslauthd version 2.1.1.19 have configured the my
/user/local/lib/sasl2 dir to contain only
Sendmail.conf liblogin.so libplain.a libplain.so.2
liblogin.a liblogin.so.2 libplain.so smptd.conf
and my smtpd.conf file has this configuration
# This sets smtpd to authenticate using the saslauthd daemon.
pwcheck_method:saslauthd
# This allows only plain and login as the authentication mechanisms.
mech_list: plain login
Seems simple enough however when i try to logon to my SMTP server i get
the following errors.
Aug 17 17:07:07 v22 postfix/smtpd[2643]: warning:
unknown[209.115.173.22]: SASL PLAIN authentication failed
Aug 17 17:07:08 v22 postfix/smtpd[2643]: warning:
unknown[209.115.173.22]: SASL LOGIN authentication failed
when i test the server with telnet i get this
EHLO computerking.ca
250-mail1.computerking.ca
250-PIPELINING
250-SIZE 1024
250-VRFY
250-ETRN
250-STARTTLS
250-XVERP
250 8BITMIME
there is know output about this must be my problem
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN OTP DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5
250-AUTH=LOGIN PLAIN OTP DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5
Is there a log i can check for sasl errors somewhere or do i need to
change my permissions on the passwd file any help would be appreciated.
Here is a posconf -n output if that helps anyone help me thank you in

nope just installs maybe i am mistaken about the options screen has

opennssl certs

2004-08-11 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
I have created my own root certificate and key so i can become my own
CA. Have created singed certs for my imap smtp and webmail server
using the common name computerking.ca. This works fine for mozilla but
with microsoft' s outlook and explorer i get errors about the CN name
not matching the server name ie the name of the security certificate is
invalid or does not match the name of the site. So now i have tried to
create several certs with different CN names ( need one for
mail.computerking and one for mail1.computerking.ca ) and signing them
with the same CA but i get this error.
v22.computerking.ca > /usr/local/sslcerts #openssl ca -out name-cert.pem
-config ./openssl.cnf -infiles name-req.pem
Using configuration from ./openssl.cnf
Enter pass phrase for ./private/cakey.pem:
Check that the request matches the signature
Signature ok
The Subject's Distinguished Name is as follows
organizationName :PRINTABLE:'Computerking'
organizationalUnitName:PRINTABLE:'Computerking Security'
localityName :PRINTABLE:'Calgary'
stateOrProvinceName :PRINTABLE:'Alberta'
countryName :PRINTABLE:'CA'
commonName:PRINTABLE:'mail1.computerking.ca'
Certificate is to be certified until Aug 9 07:50:02 2014 GMT (3650 days)
Sign the certificate? [y/n]:y
failed to update database
TXT_DB error number 2
Is there a way to make just one cert that will work for microsoft
products because the CN computerking.ca does not work for either
mail1.computerking.ca or mail.computerking. Everything seems to work
fine in Mozilla to bad i have clients that insist on using microsoft.
Would an IP address work for microsoft

emails bouced to bulkmail folder

2004-07-05 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Need some info on the what the large email severs ie Yahoo and Hotmail
use to determine if email is spam. I run a small email server with
about 30 clients and when i send email to yahoo it gets bounced to the
bulk mail folder like in my maillog below.

Read somewhere that they do a reverse lookup on your ip address for a
host name.

here is my info for reverse lookup for the ip 209.115.173.22

Does it have something to do with the fact that my ISP is running the NS
for reverse lookup and my own nameservers take care of things for
forward lookups. Should i see if i can run my own nameservers for
reverse lookup as well. What is it that yahoo does not like about my setup.

please someone help me i do not know what could be wrong and have
switched ISP's to try and solve this problem but so far it has not worked.

SICK SERVER

2004-06-20 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
I use freebsd 4.8 stable as a server it runs many services or used to,
Apache, bincimap, postfix, just to name a few. It seems to run natd and
route packets ok to the internal network that it is attached too.
However I does not seem to be functioning properly as a web server or
email server. Mostly what i use this machine for is a backup nameserver
and email server but none of these services are functioning correctly.
I can still login using my ssh2 program but cannot figure out what is
going on please can someone help me troubleshoot this machine.
My main concern is that my main mail server went down for about 3 days
so the broken server hopefully picked up the mail but does not seem to
be able to relay it back to my main server. I am using postfix 2.0.0.19

That's most odd. As you say, the apache2.sh script essentially just
runs 'apachectl start' for you. Or, at least, that's what it's meant
to do. There must be something different about what it is doing.
Hmmm... Can you show us the output from:
   # sh -x /usr/local/etc/rc.d/apache2.sh start

(make sure apache is not running before you type that)

The fact that you can do an apachectl startssl and have everything
work as desired means that you're 99.99% of the way to gettting it all
to work. The modification to the apache2.sh script I sent you last
time sould force that script to always run 'apachectl startssl'
itself, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Hmmm... I think that perhaps the problem arises from when the
apache2.sh script is run. I'm guessing that the 'Seeding PRNG' line
is significant -- it aparently means that there is no random data yet
available from /dev/random at the point when apache is started up in
the boot sequence. As you're running 4.9, that can be cured by
telling the system to use some appropriate IRQs as sources of
randomness. First run:
   % vmstat -i

and look for the IRQs where there are a lot of interrupts generated.
Not the 'clk' or 'rtc' interrupts, as those are clock ticks, firing at
regular intervals, which is worse than useless as a source of
randomness. I find that irq12 (psm0 -- the mouse), irq1 (atkbd0 --
the keyboard), irq11 (mux -- multiplex: but this is network activity
mostly) and irq15 (mux -- multiplex again, but disk activity mostly)
work well for me, but you will have to choose 2 or 3 or 4 suitable
IRQs on your own system to harvest for randomness.
Then add them to /etc/rc.conf

   rand_irqs="1 11 12 15"

Then reboot. (See rndcontrol(8) for more details)

With luck, and a following wind, there will be sufficient system
activity during startup that there will be sufficient random data
available to prime the PRNG used by OpenSSL, which should let apache
start up automatically.
	Cheers,

	Matthew

Thank you now I can mount my cd rom drives and i know how to add them to
fstab so they get mounted at boot time. However i have had problems
with my system hanging during a reboot if the cd is scratch or dirty. Is
there a way to mount these devices with less priority so if they dont
work the system will still boot. Have had the same problems with nfs
drives as well there must be a way to fix this problem i have of my
system hanging forever if the remote files are offline for some reason.

Maybe you should have mentioned that. When someone posts that their internal

This is more than likely a "winmodem", i.e. it only runs under Windows with
drivers. If you want to use a modem with FreeBSD, get an external unit.

You didn't include your kernel config file, but the default firewall
behaviour is to deny all traffic. There's a kernel config option to
change this - see the sample config files.

firewall problem??

2004-03-02 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Built a new freebsd 4.9 stable machine got it working ok could send and
recieve packets and the like. Did a cvsup and make world on it now it
does not seem to be sending or recieveing anything. Have been playing
around with it now for several weeks off and on. With a fresh reboot it
does not seem too send or recieve anything

when i try to ping google.ca i get
cannot resolve google.ca :host name lookup failure
when i ping 192.168.0.202 my gateway i get
ping: send to: permission denied
Seeing these error i think it must be firewalling everything out even me
so I issue the following command.

ipfw add 00100 allow ip from any to any

Great now i can ping google and my own machines also most important i
can login remotely.

ipfw shows this

Use the background (-b or bg) and interruptible (-i or intr) options,
along with a reasonable timeout. See
man mount_nfs for the specifics.

make sure the entry on /etc/fstab is set to noauto: then the client
won't try to mount the filesystem on boot.

mutt maildir and enviroment variables

2003-11-16 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
Ok i need some help with Mutt but not really mutt more just Freebsd in
general

I run freebsd 4.8 something
mutt version 1.4 something
postfix 2.0.0.16
bincimap version 1.2.3
when i execute the command
#mutt
i get an empty /var/mail/user mailbox
i use Maildir and my mail box is /usr/home/user/Maildir
so if i execute this command
#mutt -f /usr/home/user/Maildir
everything works fine and i can read my mail
so how do i set mutt to read this mailbox instead of /var/mail/user
i tried the .muttrc .mailrc .bashrc .chsrfile in my users home directory
i tried the .cshrc .profile file in the / directory
please can someone tell me where to set this variable so that i only
have to do it once and it will work for all the new users i create as
well please

p.s. a general overview on making these type of setting and which files
to make them in would be much appreciated as my system is getting messy
and i cant remember all the changes i have made or to what files i have
made them.

but i want to use vgetty and all the docs talk about /etc/inittab i do
not think this file exists in freebsd so where do i make my changes so
that vgetty starts instead of mgetty

also my log file for mgetty.cuaa1 has some problems with my modem mabey
you can help me with that too.

i use freebsd 4.8 and a usr 3com pci modem
this is what bsd sees for a dmseg
sio0: <3COM PCI FaxModem> port 0x6c00-0x6c07 irq 9 at device 15.0 on pci0
sio0: moving to sio4
sio4: type 16550A
this is my mgetty log mabey i should turn up my debug settings however i
really hate to reboot my system
Is there a way to reset mgetty vgetty without rebooting as my isp
changes ipaddress alot which causes my lots of dns greif and missed
emails and web hit etc etc etc

RESET FIREWALL WITHOUT REBOOT

2003-07-13 Thread RYAN vAN GINNEKEN
hello group

I need to know how to stop and start my firewall rules without resetting my computer
as I am on ADSL and have a dynamic ip that I do not want to change. seems to change
mostly when I reboot mostly.

so here is the dilemma I run bind apache bincimap postfix and a few others it is my
only server right now and it cant go down because if I do not get my clients emails I
go bankrupt.

I what to set up a firewall and have compiled the necessary items into the kernel
did this when I first set up my system many reboots ago
options IPFIREWALL
options IPFIREWALL_VERBOSE
options IPDIVERT

I have created a file called rc.fw4
and I have set my rc.conf

#ipv4 firewall
firewall_enable="YES"
firewall_type="/etc/rc.fw4"
firewall_script="/etc/rc.firewall"
firewall_quiet="NO"

IS THERE A WAY ACTIVATE ALL THIS WITHOUT A REBOOT
ALSO IS THERE A WAY DE-ACTIVATE ALL THIS WITHOUT A REBOOT IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG
WHICH USUALLY DOES WITH MY FIREWALL RULES
