[JAWS-Users] Tablets-yes or no
Tablets seem so much easier for use away from office or home but how effective are they for us? If you are a tablet user can you advise us on how functional they are both with the touch screen and with a wireless keyboard? What do JAWS users need to have for a tablet to make it fully accessible? If you know of a good article on the subject then a link to it would be a help. Thanks in advance for any help. Using one and multi-finger gestures such as taps, flicks, and swipes, users navigate to and activate controls, read text, and perform other common JAWS functions. In JAWS 17, we have continued to enhance touch screen support by providing access to the Windows touch keyboard as well as adding the ability to edit and select text in documents, messages, or web pages right from the touch screen. Support for the Windows Touch Keyboard JAWS 17 offers full support for the Windows touch keyboard, enabling you to write documents, email messages, and fill out forms on the Internet right on your device's touch screen if you do not have access to a physical keyboard. While a regular keyboard is still recommended for writing lengthy documents or performing complex editing tasks, using the Touch keyboard is convenient for writing a quick note, composing or replying to an email, or filling out a form on a web site. To activate the Touch Keyboard, double tap the Start Touch Keyboard button on the Desktop, or perform the new JAWS gesture, four-finger swipe down then up. JAWS announces "opened Touch Keyboard" and plays an ascending sound. Once enabled, the keyboard is positioned in the bottom part of the screen and each key is represented by a button. Use flick gestures to move to each key, or drag your finger around the screen to explore and locate keys. While exploring, JAWS plays a unique set of sounds to alert you when you enter or leave the area of the screen containing the touch keyboard. Once you become familiar with the touch keyboard layout, you can tap at the location of each key. To close the touch keyboard, perform another four-finger swipe down then up. JAWS announces "closed touch keyboard" and plays a descending sound. JAWS offers two different modes for typing characters: * Standard Typing: A key is typed when a double tap or split tap is performed on the screen after exploring to any of the keyboard buttons. If alternative characters are available for the current keyboard button, a triple tap will open a panel of alternative keys related to the selected key. Performing a triple tap on any keyboard button in the alternative characters panel will close the panel. Re: [JAWS-Users] Tablets
Hello, let me try and answer some your questions. As far as installing The software, it is done like any other machine that does not have a CD drive. So, what you want to do is you want to download the software from the website.as far as activating merrier, I cannot help you here, as I do not have a touchscreen device. However, when I can tell you is that I'm sure that there are custom jesters to do this.once narrator is running though, it does support full touchscreen access.in my opinion, much much better than previous Versions of narrator with Internet explorer.there are, however, custom gestures implemented to help you navigate explore with touchscreen. Sorry that I could not be more helpful in the situation. I hope this at least helps the little. Re: [JAWS-Users] Tablets
I put my answers below Alan. Eric 1. How much sighted assistance is required in setting it up out of the box? ** It can be done without help but does require some time. You really should get a short cable that does Mini USB (that connect to the Venue) to USB Female so you can move files on from a USB drive to install JAWS that way rather than having to download in the beginning. 2. How do you actually get JAWS on it? With a regular computer one can insert the CD and you are good to go. I'm sure tablets do not have a CD. Possibly put a copy of the exe file for JAWS on a flash drive to install? ** I move files on and off the device with the USB drive connected as I mentioned above. 3. With Window's 8.1 can narrator give you enough to get JAWS up and running. ** Yes, this is what I suggest to get you started. Use Narrator to set up a Blue Tooth Keyboard so you can then have been access to JAWS to get the installation done and start setting up the Tablet. On the Venue, you can toggle Narrator on and off, but pressing the Windows Key (small button on the top of the unit on the right side) and while you press that, you press the up Volume button, second button down on the right edge. (the top button on the right edge is the power button, this is just below the mini USB port). -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Alan Robbins Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2014 8:10 AM To: Jaws-Users-List Subject: [JAWS-Users] Tablets Listened to Eric & Jonathon on FS cast regarding how affordable tablets are becoming. Hello Eric Thanks very much. Regards Fanus - Original Message - From: "Eric Damery" To: Sent: Tuesday, April 16, 2013 6:28 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] tablets Fanus, JAWS 14 will run on PC's or Tablets that run full Windows 8 (not the RT version). The touch support for the tablets is not in JAWS 14 however so if you are getting a tablet with Windows 8 today, you will need to have a keyboard and/or a Braille Display like the Focus Blue to drive the tablet. JAWS 15 will add newer functionality to work with these which I'll be showing more of at the summer conventions in July and it will be in public beta around the end of August. Re: [JAWS-Users] tablets
Those ultra books are nice little deals being solid state with no moving parts certainly makes them light and probably easy on batteries. Not completely out of my price range but they aren't cheep by any means. The Samsung I bought had a decent keyboard, and the tablet can detach from the keyboard completely. I would not recommend it for a couple of reasons. First, the balance of it when using it as a laptop is not good. Since all the electronics are behind the screen, and the screen is a touch device, it is very heavy compared to the keyboard itself. Secondly, in order to use it as a tablet, you really need to disconnect it from the keyboard and I then find myself trying to go get my keyboard later since typing on these tablet devices is not very comfortable for me, as a sighted user. So I like the tablet to consume information, but if I have to produce, I find myself wanting the keyboard back. The other computer I bought last year was my Toshiba Ultra book. It is less weight than the tablet, has a great keyboard, and is balanced perfectly for using it on a desk or my lap. Hands down, I like my ultra book with Win 7 or win 8 over the tablets I've been able to try so far. Kathy, You will need to buy a tablet (touch screen device) that is using Win 8 Home addition. In the first quarter this year, all I saw was Win 8 Pro on these devices but Microsoft said there would be Win 8 Home editions shipping after the first quarter from what I recall.
