Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 22:15:26 +0200 Hallo *! How can I make my new Tekram DC-395U SCSI controller work? It bases on the new Tekram chip TRM-S1040 which is directly supported by Tekram for Linux. (You can download a driver from their ftp-site.) So I tried to compile the driver with 2.2.11 but it didn´t work. Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 22:59:39 -0400 I just strolled on to SIS's web site , and found that they finally have linux support for my card, I finally got high colour depth now, and everything works great, well with me it only works in 2048x1024 mode for 8,16, and 24 bit modes. I can get 1024x768 in 32 bit mode. Linux can read FAT32. Make sure you have the module inserted or support compiled into the kernel. As far as dual booting, check the LILO howto at sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/linux.html It is very good. SBLive is only supported with very early beta drivers. Linux does not support this card natively because Creative wont release the specs on it. > sixth..how do i make the KDE instead of gnome my default interface > when starting the X thingy? take a look at /etc/X11/prefdm. A hint though - use the network configurator from redhat's control-panel to add a PPP device - then activate the connection. But the SBPro won't be able to play MP3s at full quality because MP3s are 16bit 44kHz stereo files while the SBPro's maximum quality output is only 8bit 22kHz stereo, or 8bit 44kHz mono I believe. At any rate, OC if you want but realize it's for the tinkerer. For people scared of overclocking, I recommend just buying a pair of Celeron 400's or whatever and running them at their rated speed. They are still pretty damn fast! You wouldn't see the diff between 66 and 100 MHz FSB operation in anything but the most esoteric applications. It's over-rated. For me 100 MHz FSB is just a safe point at which to run my cheap 366 Celerons overclocked, without also overclocking my PCI or AGP bus, as at both 66 and 100 the dividers take care of making sure the PCI is at 33 and the AGP at 66. At other speeds like 83 you are overclocking your PCI and AGP bus as well, and I'd rather not bring that many variables into play. >First about the dual processor board. Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 15:53:43 +0100 I'd like to echo the opinions expressed by others, if your machine is not prone to hang/crash etc at present then it probably does not require extra cooling. However, a few points to note: When setting up the 1st few early Pentium machines for customers, we had tremendous cooling problems, having to carefully source cases to allow air flow over the processor etc...we even ended up with some tower cases with two fans drawing air in (one pointing at the processor, one at the then brand new 4Gb SCSI drives which ran frighteningly hot and died in 6 months until we started using the extra fan), a fan on the processor, and two fans drawing air outok, the extra extractor fan was overkill, but we got fed up of the damn things crashing after being on a few hours we just went into fan frenzy! These machines had problems all through the next few years, from the hard drives failing (running at 60-80 degrees C is NOT good for them, which is the sort of temps we monitored on the drives themselves without that extra fan), to RAM chips needing re-seating (heating/cooling cycles and all that)even with all the fans in, we ended up having to make call-outs (they'd got us on a 2 hour response contract too!) to replace fans with bearings getting noisyone ended up sounding like an aeroplane starting up as the fan made the whole case vibrate with the harmonics. Anyway...my point?...ermyes, fans can be essential, but they are not a good solution. The point someone made about keeping the inside of the case clean is a good one, but please, not a domestic vacuum cleaner! They tend to generate a large amount of static around the nozzle, and if there is one thing you don't want, its static zapped components...or even, static stressed components (liable to fail sooner). So, my advice, if the machine is a vital one, get a good case with a good airflow to start with without extra fans. Monitor the temp (get a multi meter with a thermo couple input calibrated to read temp straight off) of various components and plan your airflow accordingly. Keep the inside of the case clean (use filtered fans, but be aware they have less airflow) by regular and careful professional cleaning equipment, and whatever you don, don't start frying eggs on the hot bits! :-) I remember a comment by one of the designers of the Cray super computers many years ago, that they were not so much computer designers as plumbers, (I can't remember the exact wording, but I believe this was the gist of the comment) a reference to how heat dissipation was more of a problem than anything else:-) If anyone has comments to make on this rambling post, please CC my e-mail too, as I don't get to check the news groups too often -- From: "Igor T." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Soundblaster live on RH6.0, 2.2.5-15 Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 15:42:29 GMT The only way I've found is to upgrade to 2.2.10 -- works fine for me. Despite my previous post, I am usually a kind hearted soul and I remembered that I hate rude replies to innocent messages. Run 'fdisk /mbr' from dos/windows to reinstall the master boot record. This will remove lilo and fix the problem.
