Hello Julien and Everyone,

What I was trying to explain is: when I did that test, the installer did NOT
allow me to do ANYTHING except allocating the whole space for my HDD to one
partition which is sda1. I couldn't even change the size or anything else.
It happened "only" when installing from LiveCD. With LiveUSB, everything was
fine when it comes to partitioning.

Usually, I use GParted to create the partitions I need then install but
because that was a test, I created my partitions purposely during the
installation to see whether I'll get some errors or not and indeed I got
this one.

I also had this recently, but it seems to be gone with the last ISO. You can
> report a bug against ubiquity is you see it with a recent daily build :

Indeed, */dev/zram0 *is gone with the latest iso.

It's because a new version of ubiquity is available. If you use a recent
> daily build, it should not appear.

If I'm not wrong, it appeared again. I have installed 11.10 (07102011) twice
and I saw that on the 2nd one. Not 100% sure though.

Yes it's normal, we removed it (XChat) in this cycle. But you can install it
> after the installation.

Yes, I know I can do that after the installation but why to remove it on the
first place? :) just curious.

You need to update your system before sending automatic bug reports.

Well, even after I update my system, I still can't send reports. However, I
noticed that the PCManFM crashes are less now. When I first reported it, I
had like 5-6 crashes in less than 1 hour.

Please run LSC in a terminal and paste the output to a bug report.

Now LSC has new version with GTK3 with new problem and less crashes. I have
sent all the needed info to Stefano :)
I also have some notes regarding LSC but I'll wait until the final release
then will shot :D

Thanks!

Hi Julien and everyone,

So sorry for the late reply.

No, but it seems that ubiquity is not so strict about the space available.

>

Hmmm, don't know yet how the installer do that but as long as it worked,
it's ok, I won't nag about it :)

Ah, probably because you have a webcam, and my system doesn't.
>

Yes, it happened that my Cam was connected to my PC. However, my point was
and still is: there is no point of that step anyway because the purpose of
taking a picture is to use it later after the user finishes the installation
and that never happened. I mean, after I'm done with installation, I can't
see the picture I took anywhere so what's the point of that?
Do you think it might work with Ubuntu because it uses GDM while Lubuntu
uses LXDM?

No, a package available in official repository, but not installed by

>

That's really great.
So, will you guys remove the extra themes and stuff? or everything will
remain the same?
If it's still possible to do that at the moment, I would vote to remove the
extra themes and give the user all the ability to install it after that from
the repo. Just my opinion :)

Probably this bug :

Preciously. Indeed "lxpanel - 0.5.8-1ubuntu3" is working correctly.
Thanks!

Just run "ubuntu-bug network-manager-applet"

*ubuntu-bug network-manager-applet*

does not exist.

Please advice!

When I tried to report that, nothing happened. Seemed to me the Report can't

There you go :)

This is what I get when I report the problem with File Manager.

This is what I get when I report LSC.

That's all for now :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 - Testing - Part 2

2011-09-28 Thread Ali Linx
Hello Everyone,

As promised, this is my 2nd Test Notes and I'm so sorry for being late.

---
*Test No.2*
---
PC: P4 3.0GHz - 512GB RAM - *Wiped* 20GB IDE HDD - Radeon Xpress 200* *
BIOS: Phoenix

Media 1: Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 *LiveCD *- 32 bit
Media 2: Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 *LiveUSB* - 32 bit
---

*Please be advised:*
On my 2nd PC (H/W Details above), I can share my RAM with the Graphics
Memory *[Onboard Video Memory Size]* and I have decided to share 256MB which
is the maximum size I can choose from the list. Thus, this test was done on
less than 256MB RAM :D

Also, please note that my CD Drive is making terrible sounds (loud) but it
works until now.
*
*
*
*
*
*
*A- Test From LiveCD*

*Installation Notes:*
1- Try Lubuntu without Installation > CLI > startx > LXDE Desktop - Same
what happened in Test No.1

Reboot done ...

2- Install Ubuntu > Quit > Quit > Lubuntu Desktop

***3- Installation > Something else >> I'm installing on a wiped HDD with
18.6GB un-allocated space >> no matter what custom size I choose for root
(/) partition, the install allocate the whole space to that partition (sda1)
and I can't do anything about it. Definitely a bug but I'm not sure whether
I can re-produce it or not?

- I choose 4GB but it gave the whole space to sda1
- I choose 10GB but it gave the whole space to sda1
- I even tried to adjust the size after that but it did not allow me to
change it

On the partition screen, there is two devices:
- /dev/sda
- /dev/zram0

I have never seen that before so what is "/dev/zram0" ???

4- "Erase Disk and Install" was the only way to install Lubuntu on that
machine.

*B- Test From LiveUSB Creating using UNetbootin*
*
*
*Installation Notes:*
1- Try Lubuntu without installation ... WORKED :)

I have repeated that on my other PC and it worked too. That is telling me
when booting from LiveUSB, "Try Lubuntu without installation" will work but
when booting from LiveCD, it does not. Weird.

2- First Step in the installation (Choosing the Language) > *You may wish to
update this installer* > Click on it > Message disappeared.

I don't remember I have seen that before. It happened on that PC not on my
other PC. The message is a link when you click it, it's gone.

I have no idea what is that?

3- Installation > Something else > When creating new partition, it did not
give me the previous error and I can create partitions as I want and give
the size I want. I gave sda1 3.5GB only + 512MB for SWAP.

/dev/zram0 was there too.

However, something weird happened which did not happen when I was installing
from LiveCD (*A- Test From LiveCD*). I think the installer needed 30mins or
more just to move to the next step. After creating the partitions, I tried
to go to the next screen but it got stuck. I went to have my lunch and when
I came back, it moved to the next step. That never happened with me before
as far as I can remember.

4- Installation took longer but it's done.

*

Above are the installation notes.

*
*
*>Now, some other notes after installation on this PC and the other one as
well.*

1- XChat is not installed by default, unlike Lubuntu 11.04.

2- I managed to re-produce the same issue with the Menu on both PCs when it
got stuck or frozen (Screenshot will be included).

3- I installed LSC on PC2 where I did Test No.2 and I can see the Search Box
is active and the interface of LSC is a bit different now. However, I got
many Crash Report and Screenshots will be included.

4- PCManFM keeps Crashing even on both PCs. Crash Report could NOT be sent
again. Screenshots will be included.

5- The previous described issue about "Enable Networking" and "Enable
Wireless" is the same on both PCs. I also noticed that if I tick/check both,
reboot, everything back to the previous point which means both options are
un-checked or un-ticked.

6- Today I noticed that every time I reboot my machine and login to Lubuntu,
I got "Authentication required by Wireless Network" pop-up message and I
have to enter the password for my Wireless Router.
I think it's happening from time to time because on the 2nd PC, I didn't get
that message today but I'm sure I got it yesterday.

7- The 2nd PC with less than 256MB is working ok with Lubuntu and as per the
Screenshot (will be included), when the PC is idle, 60MB of the RAM is being
used. However, I had hard time during the installation.

Lubuntu does work with less than 256MB but I guess it needs more during the
installation or else, the installation will be so slow.

Hi Gabriel,

You most welcome :)

Then, you need to press Fn+F11 so that your NumLock got activated? then If
I'm not wrong, "numlockx" won't effect you unless you press Fn+F11. So
simply don't :P

I don't see there's a problem but again, it's a matter of personal opinion
and some other people may disagree with me.
After all, it's up to the developers to include this small app :)

Thanks for the tip ;)

My netbook is an Aspire One D250. If I press Fn+F11, I turn on the NumLock
and "lose" the *J,K,L,U,I,O,P *letters.

Hello Gabriel :)

I think you forgot to hit "Reply All" so I was the only one who received
your message. I think it's better to hit "Reply All" so everyone on the list
can read it. Never mind :)

I don't think this is a good idea to Lubuntu. I have a netbook, and when
> NumLock is on, I "lose" the *J,K,L,U,I,O,P *letters.

Well, on my HP Pavilion DV6, I don't even have Num-Lock. Got another Laptop
at home (Toshiba) and same applies to it. Also, we do have Netbook (Samsung
150N Plus) and there is no Num-Lock at all :)
What Netbook do you have?

Thanks!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 - Testing

2011-09-28 Thread Ali Linx
Hi Julien,

Hope you are fine and doing well. Thanks again for your reply :)

For LSC, I reported the bug as agreed:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/lubuntu-software-center/+bug/861554

Now, to reply your latest email:

3- Yes, it's a bug : http://pad.lv/819538
> If it's not fixed for the final release, you will have to use the alternate
> ISO if you have less than 4.0 Gb.

What I was trying to say is I did not get an error message or the installer
didn't crash even though the partition where I was trying to install Lubuntu
11.10 beta 2 on is less than 4GB.
I have done another installation on another PC with less space (3.5GB) and
again nothing wrong happened.
Does that mean the problem is fixed? or it happened from time to time?

Also, does the installer calculate the total HDD Size and based on that it
decides whether the Disc Space is not enough or not? just to make sure what
I'm thinking about is correct.

4- Sorry, I mean, where do you find that screen ? In which step of the
> installation did it appear ?

"Choose a Picture" Step appears right after the partitions screen but I'll
double check and confirm where exactly it appears.
But, is it a bug or something? it shouldn't show up, right?

5- Hum, I done many installations, but never having this problem :-/ I'll
> try to do some testing next time I install Lubuntu to see if I can reproduce
> it.
>

I'll try re-install Lubuntu and hope I can re-produce the same error.
Will keep you posted :)

7- We plan to add more artwork, but not by default. It should be a package
> available which have more artwork for Lubuntu.

PPA you mean? that would be great and better IMHO :)
Lubuntu really needs lots of these stuff. I was trying to write some guides
about that but I'll wait until 11.10 be released and will have 6 months to
write guides as much as possible :)

*8- I'd like to report a new problem with the Menu:*
I installed "Cairo-Dock" and I wanted to move LXPanel to the top of the
screen. I done that. While I was trying to open the menu, I got the
following *screenshot

.*
I repeated the same with the other PC without installing Cairo-Doc, I just
moved the LXPanel to the top of the screen and the same issue happened
again.
Menu is totally blank as you can see and you can't do anything unless you
moved it back to the bottom.
Please note that I haven't tried to "restart" the LXPanel.
Please advice!

9- Yes please, I'm sure the network-manager will have a look at it if you
> document it like this :)

I'm sorry but where do I have to report that? here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop ???

13- Yes, it should collect all the information we need.

When I tried to report that, nothing happened. Seemed to me the Report can't
be sent. Please advice!
Shall I include a screenshot next time?

Thanks a lot,
Ali

Yes, it's a bug : http://pad.lv/819538
If it's not fixed for the final release, you will have to use the
alternate ISO if you have less than 4.0 Gb.

How can I provide more info about it? Shall I check this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCasper and report back here?

3- I chose "Something Else" and created a new Partition (sda9) with
*3.91GB* from

Apparently, Lubuntu 11.10 "can" be installed on less than 4GB HDD. I think I
have read it somewhere that there is an error or bug because the installer
require more than 4GB. Am I right? just thought to highlight this because
this is important for those who wants to install Lubuntu on 4GB USB Drive.

4- It's currently not supported. How do you find to this screen using the
> installer ?

If it's not supported, will this feature be included with the final release
of Lubuntu 11.10?

Sorry, what do you mean by "How do you find to this screen using the
installer"???

5- It should not happen if you don't do anything like plug in a new media.
> Is it reproducible ? Are you using a USB stick or a live CD ?

I was installing from LiveCD.
No, I haven't inserted anything. I was so surprised because that was my
first time I see such message or pop-up window during the installation.
Reproducible? shall I re-install Lubuntu 11.10? I got it during the
installation process which has already begun and I'm not quite sure whether
I'll get it or not. I did not get it on my 2nd and 3rd test on the other PC
(I'll send an email about it later today hopefully).

6- Yes, sometime it doesn't work, but it's safe to just reboot by hand.

I figured that out. Thanks a lot :)

7- Thanks, we have great artists around here ;-)

Indeed he's great. It would be great too if more wallpapers can be added?
say total 12 instead of 6 maybe?

8- That would be nice to have a test case, when it's always reproducible. I
> can't currently reproduce it.

This is weird. I had it like 3-4 times yesterday and it happened when I was
writing my first email about my test. I can't reproduce it as of now but
I'll keep trying. I'll also check if the same can happen on my 2nd PC. As I
previously mentioned, I'm testing Lubuntu 11.10 beta 2 on two test PCs :)
Ok, the 2nd PC is actually next to me so I just tried to reproduce the same
thing but nothing has changed.
I'll try to provide an update later. I'll focus on what was opened at that
time and what is the item I wanted to select from the menu. I think that
would be better :)

9- Seems a bug yes, but only a display bug. Is the network working for you ?

Yes, on this PC, my Wireless Connection is working and my Wired Connection
too. I'm connected to the internet via Range Extender through Wireless
Network.

I did a simple testing while I'm writing this reply:
- Right Click on the Connections Icon showed this screen:
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8204

- Ticked "*Enable Networking*" and Ticked "*Enable Wireless*".
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8212

- I un-checked/un-ticked "*Enable Networking*" and Ticked "*Enable Wireless*".
My Networks got disconnected. I Ticked "*Enable Networking*" and
Ticked "*Enable
Wireless*" yet again and connections back to work.

So I think you are right. It's a display bug but it's confusing.

Shall I log a bug report?

10 - Thanks, bug reported :

You most welcome :)
It seems that you have the same issue. I just read the bug and I noticed
it's amd64 not i386. Shall I add my notes on the same bug report?

11-

a) It's not installed on Ubuntu also, and I'm not sure it's working nicely

I always install it after I'm done with installation whether it's Ubuntu or
Lubuntu. Yes, it's not included in Ubuntu as well. It would be nice to have
it.
I noticed it doesn't work unless you login to the desktop. From my
understanding, it should work right after booting because the same option is
Enabled in BIOS. However, in my case, it always work right after I login to
the desktop after I type my login password.
A for lxdm and gdm, never had an issue with both.

Yes, I'm aware of that but as long as you can install it after you are done
with installation, anyone else can do that too :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 - Testing

2011-09-26 Thread Ali Linx
Hi everyone,

This is my first email to the list and this is my first test ever so please,
be patient :)

I have two Test Desktop PCs, each with P4 @3.0GHz but one with 2GB RAM and
the other with 512MB RAM (with the ability to share its RAM).

---
*Test No.1*
---
PC: P4 3.0GHz - 2GB RAM - 40GB IDE HDD - Intel Graphics Card *(driver=i915)
*
Media: Lubuntu 11.10 Beta 2 LiveCD - 32 bit
---

Notes:
1- Try Lubuntu without installation does not work and drop you to CLI.
Typing "*starx*" command will take you to LXDE Desktop with LXDE wallpaper
instead of Lubuntu Desktop. There is an icon on the LXDE Desktop to Install
Lubuntu.

Reboot done ...

2- Install Lubuntu Option > Quit > Quit > Lubuntu Desktop. Please note that
I used to do the same with Lubuntu 11.04.

3- I chose "Something Else" and created a new Partition (sda9) with
*3.91GB*from un-allocated disk space. Please note that I'm
Multi-Booting several
Distros on this test PC. GRUB was installed into sda9 not MBR (sda).
Installation was smooth and errors-free.
> After
> Installation<

4- Choose a Picture during the installation process simple does nothing.
Even when I took a picture, it didn't show it on the preview small box.
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8210

Apparently, it's a new feature but I'm not sure how does it work?

5- "Removable Medium is inserted" pop-up window during installation. Not
sure if that's a bug or something?!
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8211

6- Continue Testing OR Reboot > Reboot > Please remove installation media
and press Enter - Not Responding when Press Enter > Force Reboot -
Ctrl+Alt+Del > "Press Enter to reboot msg" > Reboot Done.

Not sure if that's an error or something but I recall I got the same with
other LiveCD and other Distros, mainly Ubuntu-Based.

Installation done ... rebooted.

7- Wallpapers are really nice and getting better. Good job :)

8- Sometimes, the menu doesn't disappear even after making a selection:
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8205
Clicking on the desktop does nothing. I had to go to menu and click there
twice and then it disappeared.

9- Looks like "Enable Networking" and "Enable Wireless" does nothing:
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8204
It's not 'ticked' or 'selected'. Looks like a bug?

10- Customize Look and Feel > Window Border > No Preview
http://ubuntuforums.org/picture.php?albumid=2432&pictureid=8207

11- Some apps are not installed. I suggest to include these apps. IMHO, I
see it's good to have these:
a- *numlockx*
b- *dnsmasq *(http://forum.lxde.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=31326)
c- *GParted*
d- *Flash Player*

12- LSC installed:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-desktop/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-software-center

I'm finding it a bit hard to deal with. For example, you need to Double
Click on a Category and it takes sometime until the contents show up. Search
Box is disabled until you choose a Category and that means if you don't know
in which Category the application or program you want is included then you
need to select "All". I was looking for Firefox to install but couldn't
easily find it because I got many selections. Not to mention I got some
Crash Error and it was asking to report this problem.

13- Crash Report sometimes with Chromium and PCManFM.

14- I see too many themes, widget, etc are installed by default. I suggest
(IMHO) to remove the extra themes and give users the choice to install these
after installing Lubuntu 11.10 in case they want to. Perhaps PPA for all
these extra themes? won't that reduce some size? perhaps I'm wrong and it's
just a suggestion.

---

Ok, that's all for now.
I'm also done with two other tests on the other PC, one from LiveCD and the
other from LiveUSB. Got some stuff to share with you but guess that will be
later because I must go now.

Thank you for your time :)
