I actually did try this earlier, using Acrobat Pro.
But the result was terrible, absolutely terrible.
Any tricks?

I used the email service.   I converted a modernCV and an article.    Result

I guess there are some creative ways to do this.  I tried several mentioned

One means that I've found as an alternative has been to export .pdf,
then convert it to html by sending it to adobe.

I know it is a roundabout way to do it, but the result has been surprisingly

I've installed Python 2.5 and elyxer (along with LyX 1.6.1) under Windows XP.
What, exactly is the command to type just to try what is described in the docs:

  cd lyx16\elyxer\docs
  ..\elyxer userguide.lyx userguide.html

Of course that won't work in Windows, since Windows doesn't know that elyxer is
a python script.  So I did two things:  First, I changed the name from "elyxer"
to "elyxer.py".  And second, I tried this command:

  python -c ../elyxer.py userguide.lyx userguide.html

When Python starts, I get error message:

  File "", line 1
    ../elyxer.py
    ^

(I tried using both the Windows backward slash \ and the *nix forward slash/
but neither works.)

Once again, I'm stymied by something allegedly ported from *nix to Windows and
either not working as it should or else not documented correctly.

What's the fix (beside fixing me_?

I had something the same happen when I upgraded to 1.6.1, but I can't remember
exactly what the problem was.

Some things to check:

Under Document>Settings>Document Class make sure you
have "display=slidesnotes" (or something similar) in the Class Options

Under Document>Settings>Page Layout select Landscape

Under Document>Settings>Page Format select Letter (Default or A4 will give
portrait PDF file, even if you select Landscape: Default changes the aspect
ratio to fit Portrait, and A4 trims the right side to fit Portrait).

The last one is probably your problem.

I just upgraded to 1.6.1 and re-installed everything (miktex, gv, gs,

I think you might have to move the .pdf file which you
would like to include into the temporary directory
where LyX compiles the document.

I usually make the temp directory ( you can change it
in the preferences) someplace close to where the
actual document is.Copy and PAste the .pdf's you
want to include into the temp directory. Then you
should be able to produce output.

Thank you...

It might not be obvious to everyone.

I used the a0poster.layout that was attached but I had
to fix a couple of "end of lines", then it worked
perfectly.

Beamer is nice

Re: How to scale tables in LyX

2007-05-30 Thread Robert Orr
This is very helpful to me. Thanks for posting this.

One thing I did find strange is that it would only
work when the table was left justified. If I tried to
center and scale it I received an error during the
latex run.

So, at least for now, I have to settle for keeping the
tables on the left side of the page.

This is something I wish I had known about sooner.

In the past I have resorted to some tricks like
rotating the table to landscape, scaling the text size
or creating a new environment.

Your example is much easier.

Re: Embedding highlighed external source code files in a LyX document

I changed the converter so that it output to
foobar.tex.
Here is a copy of the .tex it generated. This I can
not import into LyX and make it compile with pdfLaTeX.

Re: Embedding highlighed external source code files in a LyX document

2007-03-29 Thread Robert Orr
I tried your suggestion but it did not help.

I then tried to simply import the .tex that was
generated by highlight into and ERT box.

I invoked the highlight program from the command line
and generated the .tex and then I put it in an ERT.
Then I tried to view pdfLaTeX and got the same error
as if I tried to use the LyX template to import the
code and do the conversion.

I believe that the .tex that was generated was the
problem. There appears to be errors in the end of
line backslashes that are generated. At least that is
my guess.

When I try to import this code below and then run
pdfLaTeX it causes an error. I had to remove the
last line to make it generate correctly.
>>> }\hlstd{\ \ \ \ }\hlstd{}\hlkwd{printf

I tried it but also got stopped with errors as below.
It looks like the highlighter is not running to
generate the .tex.

 ...nput{.\0C__LyXDocs_Temp_graceful_prog.tex}
   }
The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the
correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined.

Re: setting background color for definitions

2007-03-19 Thread Robert Orr

I don't remember where I got this but I'm sure it was
asked before and so you may find more details digging
in the archives.

I use this preamble.

\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{soul}
\newcommand{\boxit}[1]

{\leavevmode\thinspace\hbox{\vrule\vtop{\vbox{\hrule\kern1pt
  \hbox{\vphantom{\tt/}\thinspace{\tt#1}\thinspace}}
  \kern1pt\hrule}\vrule}\thinspace}

Then, in the text, I put an ERT
\boxit{\hl{TEXT}}

If you don't need the box around it, then you can
leave out the newcommand definition for boxit and just
use the hl{TEXT}

Re: Keyboard punctuation not working - have to double press to input punctuation chars

2007-03-11 Thread Robert Orr
I believe I may have stumbled upon the solution.

I used to have my desktop shortcut for LyX using the
target  C:\LyxFiles\lyx\bin\lyx.exe -userdir
C:\lyxuserdir

so I figured I would just use the same userdir for the
LyX 1.4.X version.Apparently this was a bad idea
and resulted in the messed up punctuation. I
removed the userdir and copied my .layouts over to the
new 1.4 directory and everything seems to be OK now.

Keyboard punctuation not working - have to double press to input punctuation chars

2007-03-05 Thread Robert Orr

I have a strange problem with my LyX keyboard entry.

It seems that I have to double enter the punctuation
characters on the keyboard. The first press has no
effect, the character appears on screen only after the
second press.

Has anyone else seen this?

It seems it just started after I upgraded from 1.3.5
to 1.4.3.-5 version of LyX.I'm using it on Windows
XP and I only have this problem with LyX (i.e. Word
pad, etc. are fine)

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: How to import source codes

The long lines problem I mentioned was my own screwup.
 I was trying to cut-n-patse the .tex into an ERT box.
 I didn't realise I needed to use \input{file.tex} for
that.

Otherwise, OK, except for the aforementioned \dq
command not recognized.

Any ideas about it?

Re: How to import source codes

2006-06-06 Thread Robert Orr

I am actually inputting VB code. So I grabbed your
external template and updated it for .bas code.

The highlight program is converting to .tex and, in
the process, inserting "\dq{}" commands here and
there. I don't know what these are, but they are not
very muched liked by .lyx. If I remove them and then
use \input{file.tex} in ERT I don't have a problem.

So, whatever these dq commands are are not being
understood by .lyx.I have to get out the LaTeX
book, I guess.

Thanks

Phil

Thanks Gunnar,

It is functional now.

It does appear, however, that sometimes the
highlighter generates .tex with very long lines that
are not recognized upon inclusion in the .lyx file.
 I can workaround for now.For the most part it is
working very well.

Thanks for the info.

I would like to add something that isn't obvious.

When you add this converter, it only works if the PATH
variable is updated so that the executable is
recognized from the command line.

So, if you add a converter, make sure to update your
PATH environment variable too.

Re: Arrows linking different tables

pstricks package allows this.

First load pstricks pkg and experiment a little to
get used to what you can do.

In the final doc. What I do is follow these steps.

1. overlay a psgrid i.e. put an ert \psgrid somewhere
at the bottom of the page

Re: align figure and equation inside of a float

2006-03-31 Thread Robert Orr
you could try putting two mini pages in that float,
then in first one put the graphic, in the other put
the equation. Insert horizontal fill in between the
two mini pages. Size the two pages at 70% and
25%, or whatever looks best.

Attached example.

Yea, I don't know, Rich. I can't seem to get all

the files when downloading 1.4.I tried from san
diego mirror too. I download it OK, of course in
binary, and tried both bzip and gzip versions.When
I open the archive I'm only seeing the development
directory.   Nothing else.

I downloaded version 1.3.7 just to make sure I could
do it. It downloaded fine and I was able to open the
complete archive.  No probs.

Something funny going on.

I don't want to beat a dead horse, but, for
instance,when experimenting to get the image just

So, if one enters both an H and a W parameter, does
LyX use the H and calculate the W, or does it take the
W and calculate the H? I'm a little foggy on that
one and I've experimented with it to no conclusion.

Hi Alex,

I just fired up LyX and loaded one of my powerdot
presentations; looks like you have to export .ps and
then run ps2pdf on the .ps file to generate a .pdf

If you have powerdot, check the users guide, section
8.2 for info
on creating/viewing output.

Re: positioning image

2005-11-25 Thread Robert Orr
I believe you have two choices to add an image to your
LyX doc.

1) you can add an image as a non-float

I believe this image appears in the output in the same
relative position as it appears in the LyX document.

or

2) you can add a image as a float

In the case of a float, it means the image will be
placed in the final output according to LyX' rules.
 That is, it floats and ends up where the LyX rules
think it fits best.If you right click on a float
image (or table) a dialog comes up and asks you where
you would like the image placed. The dialog has a
option to force the image to appear in the output
document right where you have placed it in the LyX
doc.

Re: converter for pdf

Thanks.

I did try to convert to 1.3.6 today. No good. My
powerdot .lyx files will not convert. Looks like I
get an error when it tries to run clean_dvi.py

So it is back to 1.3.5 for now. I somehow messed up
my converts on 1.3.5. I think I pretty much have
them back to normal.

Now I have this and it seems to be working OK:

EPS -> PDF : epstopdf --outfile=$$o $$i
DVI -> Postscript : dvips -t seascape -o $$o $$i
DVI -> PDF (dvipdfm) : dvipdfm $$i
Postscript -> PDF : ps2pdf -dCompatibilityLevel=1.3
$$i
LaTeX->PDF (pdflatex): pdflatex $$i

I'm sorry I don't really understand completely your
answer to the fundamental question.

But, OK, Docbook is not LaTeX. I got that much.

Apparently even though the LyX Win32 version has
templates for these Docbook documents, a user can not
actually create and edit one of them unless other
tools are installed.?? That following the Wiki for
installing LyX for Windows does not provide full
support for some of the base templates?

I conclude that would be more or less correct.

Hi -

So I checked my MikTeX setup and sure enough, there is

Unfortunately, I can not find docbook.

Has anyone come across this issue before?I am not

You might want to have a look at the "listings"
package.

Along the lines of using a straight diff program: I
would highly recommend kdiff3.

Thanks Rob.
Also, any idea where I can get these missing files?
latexconfig.lyx.in and lyxconfig.lyx.in

2004-12-30 Thread Robert Orr

> What version is found? Have you renamed the old

With regard to my sed error. It seems it was my
fault. I had assumed that after renaming sed.exe to
oldsed.exe, that one should then copy the new sed.exe
into the lyx/bin directory to replace it!

I actually did renamed sed.exe to oldsed.exe, but then
I figured that the next thing to do would be to take
the sed.exe from the newly loaded version of GNUSED
and place it in the directory where the old sed.exe
was. That was where I was getting hung.

I didn't see anywhere in the instructions there where
it said to "download a more recent version of SED AND
to add it into the PATH," although that might be
assumed obvious, it was not on the first go around to
me.

So now it looks like configure finds sed.exe OK now
but there is an error for a missing file
C:/lyx/share/lyx/doc/LaTeXConfig.lyx.in
I seem to recall there was a post about where to find
theseIf anyone knows please post it.

Thanks

Re: 1.3.3 on XP - no output

2004-12-29 Thread Robert Orr
I have to comment that the exact method on the wiki
page didn't work for me.

Even following the tips for "If LyX's configuration
fails or was incomplete" I could never get LyX
configure to complete without errors. I consistently
got hung up with a SED error

sed: file chkconfig.sed line 1: Unknown option to 's'

and could never get past it, despite installing
various versions of GNUSED. I think there is
something not quite right regarding that part of the
wiki page. The part about what to do with
"install the latest version of sed from the sed.exe
setup file, which can be found at sourceforge."
It seems very unclear about exactly what one is
supposed to do there.

In regards to installing the other packages, like
ghostview and acroread, I found that (I have Cygwin on
my XP box) creating soft links ln -s gswin32.exe
gs.exe helped to get the script to recognize these
programs when doing the LyX configure.If you make
copies of these programs and rename them to what LyX
is looking for, that also works to allow LyX to find
them. Essentially the LyX script is looking for the
*nix version of these programs an doesn't check
properly for the win32 versions. I could be wrong
about it, but that is the way it seemed to me. So
bottom line, your LyX configure will probably go
better if you rename those programs so that LyX can
find them.

I'm eagerly awaiting a cleaner install package.

For the record, I put my MikTex, Ghostview,
Ghostscript, Imagemagic, and AdobeReader in the top
level at C:\

1.2.3 is from Jan 8 2003. Not too ancient.

I'll try to upgrade my LyX, if possible. Hopefully
that will do it.

Unknown TextClass tag 'Counter' in beamer.layout

2004-12-12 Thread Robert Orr
I just tried to install beamer with my LyX 1.2.3

I am getting this error "Unknown TextClass tag
'Counter'"
around line 232 of beamer.layout when I try to set the
document layout.

Has anyone seen this error?I tried to reconfigure
several times and I don't see any errors during the
process.

Perhaps you could try something like this using AWK
BEGIN{

/^#/ {
next
}
/^\\/ {
next
}
{
words += NF
}
END {
printf ("I think there are about %d words in that LyX

I usually just cut and paste an existing fig from my

to do is right click on the fig and change the
graphic.
It is somewhat of a shortcut to running through the
