They require a mask.
Some, like my dad, require a full face mask that covers both mouth and nose.
I might have ended up with one if I hadn't been able to lower the pressure on
my machine, as originally prescribed it could break my soft palate and force
air in my nose and out my mouth while wearing a nasal mask.
Then there's the old fashioned nasal mask that covers the nose.
And lastly, the new nasal pillows mask that covers the nostrils.

Maybe Craig can elaborate, but the current situation seems to be that if the
subject comes up in your physical, the doctor may insist you be tested before
signing your medical card. Then if you test positive, it's sort of a license
condition, like my DL says corrective lenses required.

It's great for truckers who have Apnea as a condition on their medical card.
(at least for the ones who don't refuse to treat their apnea)
They just buy the machine through their employer and the employer gets the
daily downloads just like your DME gets yours. (on the rental contracts, the
DME has to track compliance to keep getting the rent payments from the insurer)

I was so glad to be able to get a decent night's sleep for the first time in a
decade that compliance isn't a problem with me. I've had one night I slept less
than four hours, one night I was so stuffed up I couldn't wear it, and one
night I was reading in bed and forgot to put it on, so my compliance rate is
just under 99%.

Probably Verizon. The internal modem is CDMA.

Is there a sticker on it directing you to myair.resmed.com or similar?
That's where you can register with Resmed so they know whose medical data the

[MBZ] ML trailer wiring

2017-08-22 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
When I'm done I'll post a complete how-to, but I still have to do one final
thing: send some battery positive to the trailer light control box. (actually,
I'd prefer ignition switched positive in case the thing has parasitic current
draw when sitting idle)

I decided to use the 12v aux power (lighter socket) outlet in the right rear of
the cargo area. I think this is far superior to running a wire under the car to
the battery, as a pro installer did in a video I watched. The socket is fused
for 20A, which shouldn't be a problem unless I play a CPU intensive video game
on a 17" Laptop while a trailer is plugged in with the headlights and hazard
lights on.

The question is, how do I get to the hot wire for that outlet?
Is there a non-destructive way to remove the outlet from the trim panel, tap
into the wire, and reinstall, or do I need to remove the entire panel?

Mitch.

Ok, so your doc is using the Exhale Pressure Relief, or in other words it's set
up to work like a Bi-PAP instead of a CPAP. For me, EPR=2 didn't feel like it
was helping any, and EPR=3 felt strange and distracted me. So, when you first
go to sleep, it should be running at 6cm of water column for exhale pressure
and 9cm inhale, and if it detects a problem with your breathing (or an air
leak) it'll increase pressure as necessary.

I've heard of people (probably nobody who had a 2nd study to determine
pressures) that received a prescription of 5-20cm, or in other words, "I don't
have any idea what pressure this patient needs so I'll give the machine free
reign". Fortunately, neither my doc or your doc use an AutoPAP as a substitute
for writing a proper Rx.

Are you supposed to go back in 3-6 months so your Dr can review the
effectiveness of your APAP usage? Mine did a follow-up in 90 days.

Re: [MBZ] I get worked over at the cpap store

2017-08-22 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I don't know what your Rx is, but to give an example, mine was set to ramp up
from a pressure of 5.0, then after ramping it would run from 9.0-12.0 as
needed. You can set it to ramp a specific number of minutes after you turn it
on, or have it sense when you go to sleep and ramp up when you're asleep.
The 9-12 range was determined in my sleep study. 5 is pretty much the minimum
pressure for these, if you get below 4 or 5 it feels like the machine is
restricting your breathing, so my Dr had it set to run at 5 until I fell
asleep. My Dr didn't specify BiPAP mode which lets you exhale at a lower
pressure than you inhale, I enabled that mode once and it felt like the machine
was trying to tell me when to breathe. Maybe if my pressure was 15 I'd want
pressure relief when exhaling.

Brianna told me I snored less the night after the sleep study, apparently one
night with the machine at the sleep center helped open my breathing passages.
After a few months on it, I found I can run it at 7.0 and it virtually
eliminates my apnea, but 7 didn't stop my apnea the night of my study.
Now that I'm used to it, 7 feels like nothing, so there's no point in trying to
get the pressure lower than that.

If you download SleepyHead, you can stick the memory card in your computer and
see what pressures it runs through the night. They say to write protect your
card before sticking it in a computer and backing up the data on it. If your OS
likes to write stupid indexing files on the card without asking, or altering
the directory structure, not flipping the write switch on the card might make
it useless in the CPAP machine.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/sleepyhead/

For me, I'd see it run up to 12 when I caused a leak, then stay at 12 for 15-20
minutes before slowing backing down to where it belonged. I found it worked
better (for me) to just give it a tight range, like 7-8, or even 7-7 once I
found out that 7 was my best pressure. I think it's a software flaw to have it
run the pressure to the top of its allowed range when you have a mask leak.
That reminds me, I have to see about getting fitted for the pillows and see if
I knock the mask loose less often with a smaller mask.
Mitch.

I believe that the upper and lower limits are set by the vendor to match the
prescription, then the machine automatically adjusts the pressure to prevent
apnea events by raising pressure when it detects an event.

If the DME is in your insurance network, they should give you a refund if what
you might owe on the EOB from your insurance company is less than what you

The entire medical world seems to work this way, then some poor slob walks in

Was riding with my now-deceased great uncle about 10 years ago, couldn't have
been going over 55 when a buzzard was slow to lift off, and Uncle Clyde gave it
a helpful boost in the backside with his windshield. Didn't seem to harm the
buzzard, but I bet it didn't push its luck that far when the next car came

Press and hold the home button under the display, and the round knob to the
right of the display. After a while, it'll enter clinical setup (don't mess
with the clinical settings, I just want you to fix the display setting).

Go into settings, rotate the knob to scroll way down until you get to
Essentials under Options. Press the knob to enter Essentials, and switch it
from On to Plus. Now hit the home button, turn the knob to scroll up to exit
clinical menu, press the knob, and you should be back at the normal home
screen. Now you've set it to display plus data instead of the minimum data they
think is essential.

This way, in the morning you can look at the display to see the most recent
night's AHI instead of logging into ResMed's web site to get it after waiting
for your machine to phone home.

is the problem with health care and insurance in this country. I could go
online to Amazon and buy the same machine for $489, or at an online cpap place
for $889 or so. Make is $69 to $109, hose is $20. I wanted to just get on with
it and be done and paid them their money.

The window regulators on these and models of similar vintage are prone to fail.
They use a really poorly designed regulator system that utilizes nylon pulleys
with steel cables, and the pulleys fail from material fatigue over time and
disintegrate, rendering the window unusable.

The W220s do it, too.

I would much rather have this car, but the owner has been huffing brake
cleaner, methinks:

The moon REVOLVES about the earth (and the earth REVOLVES about the
sun), the moon and earth ROTATE about their axes (and the moon is
rotation-locked to the earth so it always presents the same face to the

And actually earth rotation speed is about 1000mph (24 hours, 24000mi
circumference).

2017-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Except when you have a Public Service Commission that is also wrapped up
in the politicians, and the other oversight organs that are controlled
by the politicians. That is what happened here, the corruptocrats
passed a law called the Base Load Review Act that basically put all risk
on the ratepayers, and the PSC and other oversight orgs just
rubber-stamped everything the utilities wanted (and their lobbyists
called for) while tehe corruptocrats continued to collect their checks
from the donors in the whole spectrum of utility execs and contractors, etc.

Just saw a blurb that the chosen reactor design (Westinghouse AP1000 I
think it was) was basically unbuildable due to specifications that were
generally unachievable by any sort of construction practices.
(Westinghouse is bankrupt, I think Toshiba bought them, and Toshiba is
teetering now too).

So these guys, some of whom admit they relied on whatever the lobbyists
told them, are responsible for screwing the citizens bigtime, while also
probably causing a collapse of a segment of the international economy.
The utility execs were collecting big bonuses for their management of
this whole sh**show, which makes sense because they did a great job for
their stockholders (except for the state-owned utility, but they also
unloaded huge risk per the elected idiots).

A perfect storm of incompetence and money and corruption. What's not to
like?

Happened to me in Indiana years ago (Marble Hill) and hit us here in FL
recently with Duke buying a broken plant (Crystal River) that had duct tape and
baling wire repairs that they bought for pennies on the dollar that they were
going to “fix up”. After determining that the bodged up repairs the previous
utility performed compromised the unit so badly it couldn’t be fixed, they
decided to shut it down. Who is paying for that?

Why the ratepayers, of course! Heavens, we couldn’t let the grossly mismanaged
and horrendously overbudget costs fall back on the stockholders, now could we?

That’s my problem with publicly owned utilities that the states regulate.

Re: [MBZ] OT Sorta speaking of politics and energy

2017-08-22 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
The nukes in MD have already been written off and no new ones are being
built. Our local utility is also very solar friendly and pays me market
rates for my PV generated roof top power. I can never understand why the
southern tier of states - including AZ and NV -as well as FL and its
neighbors - are so unwelcoming to solar energy. There are literally
thousands of high skill jobs they are missing out on.

You missed the part that it has already been put on the backs of the
ratepayers. We have paid for the it with bills 30-35% higher that they
would have been otherwise, for years and years. The politicians are
exactly to blame. The corruption in this state is incredible. Turns
out the AG is now shown to be in bed with the top lobbyist/political
consultant in the state in investigating the corruption. He tried to
derail another attorney from the investigations because it appears he is
also in bed with the corruptocrats. Incredible.

Rampant mismanagement, the contractors have gone bankrupt, would
take another $8-10bil to finish. This was all enabled by a law
that the legislature passed some years ago that guaranteed them
the rate-payers would pay for the project during construction (as
opposed to the utility bonding it out to be paid when on-line).
Now there is like another $2bil in obligations the ratepayers get
to pay. The execs have all been raking in huge bonuses over the
years for their management expertise in funneling YOOOGE
amounts of money to various contractors and politicians. The
politicians are now claiming that the lobbyists told them this
would work out well, and are now scrambling to set up commissions
and panels and investigatory bodies to find out what happened, and
to shift blame away from their ignorance and corruption.

We are so screwed.

Need to fire and replace most if not all of the top management of the
utility, and figure out a better solution than abandoning the project.

Re: [MBZ] '98 Porsche Boxster 5 speed on BAT

2017-08-22 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
yesterday when I was driving back from Clumya there were some massive
backups on I-26, sometimes this is normal. Anyway, at one point there
was a Boxster off in the ditch sideways and astraddle on the right side
of the road, launched fairly far off the road. I was wondering how he
managed to do that, I figure he was tooling along and car in front
stopped short and he had to dump it off the side to keep from
rear-ending the car ahead. I guess the nannies were not too helpful.
Driver and a coupla other cars were there, the driver, man dressed well,
did not look Happy.
