How on Earth can you save that much?!? I'll be lucky to make that over

 Tim

soapbox It is possible, even on a middle class income. Most of us on this
list own, will or have owned Mercedes for various reasons, the primary one
being that we are frugal. If you can live without the latest and greatest of
stuff, you know, reuse/recycle/use up and you don't have to keep up with the
Jones you will be dollars ahead. I have made well over a million dollars
(gross) all totaled over the last twenty seven years. I had almost $100k in
a 401(k) saved in less than 5 years. Drugs/failed relationships and alcohol
took all that away. Now it is time to do it again. I can and will save and
earn from investment income enough to retire. It won't be easy and I am not
fond of playing catch-up. It CAN be done, but you have to want it bad
enough. You know, pinch pennies, invest wisely, delay and save for major
purchases instead of using credit...If I, ( a middle class schmoe with no
formal degree) can do it, so will you /soapbox

I have a Toyota that I am reassembling. It has been sitting for a while and
there is a light coating of rust on a two of the cylinders. The pistons, crank

and then going over them with a scotch-brite pad. Either that or positioning
each piston at the bottom of the bore and using a glaze breaker on each
cylinder. I am not changing the rings or anything, just putting a head on. Any

Re: [MBZ] Shipping large stuff

2005-12-20 Thread Rick Knoble
Or you can do it the way the pros do it and just slap a label on it.
Bumpers, hoods, doors, fenders, wheels etc are all shipped bare by me.
That is the best way to do it. You will have to use fedex though as I
dont think UPS will do it. I have tried bubble wrap, boxing them etc
and they get damaged more often than not that way. That is because the
fedex dudes just throw them around. If they are bare they take more car
handling them because they know what they are handling. Its also WAY
more expensive with all the extra package material.

UPS ships stuff bare also. I bought something (a water tank) off of eBay and
the guy said local pick up only I sent him a shipping label, he slapped it
on the tank, the UPS guy picked it up and it got here a couple days later.
Whatever you ship MAY take a beating, so if it is a one of a kind priceless
item, ship it some other way. I work for UPS. I know what happens to stuff.

Hell, I even buy my Toyota parts from Rusty. His prices are as good as any,
plus he has sponsored these MB lists for years. It kinda chaps my ass when
someone wonders about buying crap from McParts, or adsuk or where ever.
Kinda like asking what brand of 20+ year old German car to buy, BMW or Opel.

On the other hand, and to the other Listers who may have replied with some
unneeded remarks, I say that I did not know that it was mandatory to buy
from a certain vendor or that it was Taboo to even contemplate the
existence
of several vendors who cater to the MB community!

I was one of 'em. I didn't mean to piss in your Wheaties. I meant no
offense.

I have owned and serviced foreign automobiles for over 25 years. Rusty's
service is second to none, and I have tried many mail order auto parts
emporiums. Many were good, MB Parts surpasses them all. I can second that
statement for parts for other imported autos also. In my opinion, if you
are buying parts for an imported car, buy them from Rusty. That is all.

Yes, if for no other reason than extended drain intervals. Don't use it to
try to break in a new engine. It is just too slippery.

Yeah.

3. What weight should I use?
I use 5w40 in everything 'cept the bikes. Motorcycles with wet clutches need
15w-50. It has no friction modifiers.

2006-01-13 Thread Rick Knoble
Hi All,
I have an opportunity to purchase an '87 190d turbo for $500. It needs a heater
core, and maybe a head. It was overheated. The guy is a mechanic. He changed
the head gasket, but coolant is disappearing somewhere. It has 265k miles, and
is pretty clean. He just did brakes and a bunch of front end work. My gut
instict is buy it immedeately. Any thoughts?

Stoned and on meth! Gump cars are NEVER, I repeat! NEVER over $200,

Anyway, didn't drive the 240, but it is obvisouly very rough. He

This looked like it would make a fine Gump-type car, so I called the
seller for more info. Story is that some guy was driving it 50 miles a
day before trading it in on something less crappy, and then it just sat
at the back of the lot for a while. Floors, fenders, rockers, etc
 are
all pretty rusty, but the mechanicals and mismatched tires are
supposedly fine. No state inspection, and other than a new primer
 pump,
it seems the only thing they've done with it is take pictures. It's a
typical rusty old 240D. Just drive it until something breaks and then
use it as a donor car.

Reserve is $1000. At least it doesn't get 40mpg.

You will lose some and how much depends on how fast you are.
Removing 1 at a time may help by not creating a vent. You should be

Re: [MBZ] B2 Piston repair? --- Transmission failing

2006-03-25 Thread Rick Knoble
 to dislodge
it. Once it has been dislodged, you can use your pick tools to pull it
free. It may still be a bit tight; I had to grab the pick handle with a
pair of pliers to get a good enough grip to pull the seal, but it did
come out. Note you will damage the face of the bushing in the process
of doing this, but that's OK because there should be a new platic
replacement bushing if you ordered all the parts mentioned in the
mbz.org article.

Once the seal is out, the old alloy bushing comes out easily.
Install the new plastic (teflon?) bushing and drive the new seal in to
hold it in place. I used the butt end of a screwdriver handle to do
this; you want something that won't mar or dent the metal surrounding
the seal. Be sure the seal is driven in flush with the case and is
holding the bushing down tight.

Replace the large red O-ring that seals the B2 piston cover.
Remove it with one of your pick tools, gently, so you don't scratch the
case. (Note that one of the Easley articles cautions against doing
this, saying it is nearly impossible to replace the O-ring with the
transmission in the car. However I had absolutely NO problem getting
the new one in place.)

Before you install the new piston, carefully inspect the bore for
any dirt or other foreign matter. Wipe it out carefully with a clean
lint-free rag and be sure it is absolutely clean.

Install the little pushrod into the indentation in the band at the
rear of the bore. It should stay in place, though it will be sloping
downward a bit. One of the Easley articles suggests using a dab of
heavy grease to help it stay in place, but I did not find that necessary
nor am I sure that sounds like a very good idea to introduce heavy
grease into the transmission works (though maybe the ATF would just wash
it away once it started circulating).

Due to the close clearances, I draped a piece of plastic wrap over
the new piston to keep it clean as I installed it, because it's almost
impossible to avoid brushing some part of the chassis as you work it
into position. The plastic can be slipped off once the piston has
cleared the chassis and is ready to be inserted. I used Saran wrap,
which is pretty clingy and thus was a bit awkward to remove. Regular
visqueen or maybe even waxed paper would probably be better. You
definitely don't want have it tear and leave a bit of plastic wrap in
there (I checked to be sure the wrap was intact once I got it out).
Everything I read about this repair stressed the need for cleanliness so
I didn't think I could be too careful here.

As you slide the new piston in, be sure the pushrod engages into
the piston. You won't really be able to see this so you kind of have to
visualize it. Mine worked on the first try. You know it's in place if
when you depress the piston you get a spray of ATF out of the bottom of
the valve body.

Replace the cover, reinstall the snap ring, and you're done.
Remeber when installing the snap ring that the gap in the ring straddles
the raised round extrusion on the edge of the piston cover. I put mine
back in the original 2 o'clock position, though I'm not sure it really
matters.

That's about it -- from here on it's just a matter of putting
things back together. I also did the K1 spring upgrade (described at
mbz.org) before I put the pan back on, since I had everything opened up
anyway and it only added about $10 to the parts cost. That was a very
easy install; nothing to add to what's already written up on that.

Don't overtorque the pan or it may warp and leak. Buy or rent a
low-range torque wrench for this, it's important. Justify the purchase
by the amount of money you are saving on this repair (I was quoted
$1,500 by one local shop).

Hope this all helps anyone who might undertake this repair on a W123.

Am I correct in assuming this process will go faster in the heat of
 summer.

Yes, and the AC cranking full blast helps. It adds to the load and helps
generate even MORE heat. I had tried for more than a year in daily 35
mile round trip commutes (about 50:50 highway city) and had made some
headway cleaning out my 190D 2.0 that daughter had carboned up after a
few years of short hop city driving (6 miles round trip).

I was finally able to REALLY clean it out in about 25-30 miles of hilly
highway driving on I-68 just south of the western PA/MD line in July
heat. I was able to wind the engine out going up each mile+ long hill
with the AC cranking full. After 20 or so miles of this there was
virtually NO more black puffs. Fuel economy improved about 7% (it was
already above 40 mpg) and the available power was clearly improved (0-62
mph acceleration dropped below 18 sec).

I noticed the same problem with all cars in recent years--so few colors

there were hundreds of colors, and you could order special paint jobs

That's the lazy man's way. It would get some damage for sure that
way and it is doubtful that freight insurance would cover poorly
packed items.

Believe it or not, open bulk or irreg items (as they are referred to) get
treated pretty well if they are open and NOT boxed. I won a bladder tank for
my well on eBay and the guy said local pick-up only. I asked him if he
would slap a shipping label on if I sent him one and set it on his porch for
pick-up. He said sure. A couple mouse clicks later (I have a UPS shipping
account), and I mailed him a shipping label. A couple more days after that,
I had my tank, damage-free. Simple.

2006-03-29 Thread Rick Knoble

Most of the time that works. I've found, though, that UPS is
occasionally capable of destroying the most carefully packed items.

You are absolutely correct.

A friend who used to do seasonal work for UPS
during the holiday season had some stories about how he'd see people
throw packages several feet, kick them around, etc.

If you remember the Samsonite suitcase commercial, with the monkeys handling
the suitcases, that is pretty close. That said, percentage wise very few
packages are lost or destroyed. UPS automatically insures packages for up to
$100. If they had to pay too many claims, they wouldn't be around very long.
They have been in business since 1907.

That said, UPS's website specifically says you can ship
irregularly-shaped metal items without boxing them, if you put cardboard
over any sharp or protruding ends.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. I WORK for UPS and I see this stuff EVERY DAY.
If you ship auto body parts this way they are more likely to get there
intact than if you wrap them like china. If you want to be ABSOLUTELY SURE
that your stuff gets there intact with UPS, insure it for $5000. That will
put it into the High Value category, and it WILL get treated with kid
gloves.

Larry,

Here's a spreadsheet with performance data (from sales brochures and
TDM's) for most all 124's, plus some assorted 123, 126, 140, and 201
data:

http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/other/acceleration_specs.xls

Spec for your car is 12.8 seconds.

 Howdy -
What should my target time for 0-60mph be - '91 300D 2.5 Turbo? I'm going
to benchmark it - tried it today but noticed the AC was on and the road
wasn't really level either - so I'll try again. My fingers on the stopwatch
may not have been quite perfect either.

 TIA!

Mark,

Here's a photo of the real tools:

http://www.w124performance.com/images/tools/OM60x_serp_belt_tools.jpg

Cost of the tool via Rusty should be under $100. I recommend buying
the tool if you intend to own OM60x engines for any length of time.
Otherwise, some people say you can slip a small Allen wrench into a
hole in the pulley, and brace it against a rib on the water pump. I've
not done this myself but others claim it works OK... just don't break
the water pump. With the stubby hex socket and spinner tool shown in
the photo above, the fan can be pulled out without removing the
radiator.

Does anyone know a good way to hold the water pump pulley, on a 603 engine,
to keep it from turning while removing the hex head fan bolt? Mercedes
sells a tool but it is 140.00.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the
procedure to check the timing chain stretch?

Line up the marks that are on the collar of the
cam gear and the back of the front cam bearing tower
at the 3 o'clock position when you're standing in front.
Read the degrees of stretch off of the timing scale on
the damper. Rotate the engine only in the correct direction,
either with the crank nut or the power steering nut. The
latter, if it works for you, is usually considerably easier
to access. Anything above 5 degrees means it's probably time
to change it out. Double that and it's time to not start
the engine again before you fix it!

I cant count the number of times I have had to walk home because of
scuffed gaskets.

Johnny B. overlooks the ideal reason (and maybe only) to use a very
very small skim of Hylomar when installing any gasket.. it keeps the
darn thing in place while you move stuff around.

Richard

On Apr 3, 2006, at 5:42 PM, Christopher McCann wrote:

Is this something that you should use as a matter of course when

Chris

This is something that I choose to do, especially when the head and

block are of dissimilar metals. I have no idea whether Ma Benz
approves or disapproves the use of Hylomar.
I use it because it works as a sealant able to make up for slight
surface variations and imperfections while lubricating the surfaces.
The real benefit is not immediately evident. Every cold/hot cycle
that the engine endures causes scuffing of the gasket surfaces, more

so when dissimilar metals are employed. It is stated by the
manufacturer that Hylomar doesn't dry, rather it protects against
this scuffing with its lubricating qualities.

I will look into that. I should mention that when I replaced the radiator
hoses, rubber right ? They had a layer of rust in there. I think there is
a ton of rust in this engine. What is the routine for getting rid of all
of this ? Is one acid flush typically enough ? What about using a

On the subject of the radiator, do you ever replace them when they are not
leaking but because they have correded inside or have deposits within them
that can't be removed ?

Put in a new spark plug, or at least wire-brush the one that's in there.
Gap it to specs. This is a magneto ignition so the gap spec is usually
pretty small -- too big a gap and it won't fire. Get some fresh gas in
there, too.

Some of these engines have primers, and some have a manual choke. The
choke, if equipped, is usually a small lever on the carb, the primer is
usually a small rubber button. They tend to be critical to getting the
thing to start on the first pull or two. For a cold start, if it has a
choke set it on full. If it has a primer, try three to five strokes.

Actually, the listing will say:

The attached photos don't really do this dress justice. It is absolutely
gorgeous! I thought about modeling the dress for a photo but that just
seemed wrong given that I have a bald spot on my head and a goatee on my
chin – I think someone already pulled that stunt on eBay a while back.
Besides, if I were to model for a photo then (1) I could no longer state
that the dress has never been worn and (2) my wife would keep a copy of the
photo and would certainly threaten to show it to my co-workers if I ever
forget our wedding anniversary.

Can't help you with Rover experience aside from mentioning that a friend of
a friend put a 350 in one.

Your everything old is new again comment is poignant. I remember not too
long ago that the big old muscle cars were much berated and there was talk
of some Washington legislation that would have them all crushed. Seems funny
now that one of the most desirable things is new cars that are mock old
cars. The Mustang, Thunderbird, and this Land Criuser, to name a few attempt
to look just like their predecessors.

I'm greatly disappointed that when Chrysler finally brought back the
Charger, it looks nothing like one, and is in fact ugly. On the other hand,
have you seen the Challenger concept car?

Based on the 4Runner so bigger than the original I'd think.

I'd surely love to have about an '80 FJ. One downside that springs to mind
immediately if you regularly haul people is the rear jumpseats.
I saw an article once about putting a later model 4 banger in one in place
of the low compression, low horsepower I6. They said it had more power and
much better mileage with the 4.

On a slightly related note theres a '72 Land Cruiser at a local lot which
my wife has fallen in love with. Its in very good shape, I took some time to
crawl around under it and the frame is solid with good paint. Our Dodge
Dakota is going to need replacing in the next 1-3 years (185k with the rust
monster encroaching) and I'm into cool vehicles like the cruiser plus my
wife only drives a few miles a day. Anybody got Rover experience?

I spied a vehicle this evening that I didn't know was being made. It
 was a
new vehicle, but it had the front end styling of an old Toyota Land
 Cruiser
 - you know, the type that were small and Jeep-like. I didn't feel like
turning around to pull over and look at it close up. Vintage Land
 Cruisers
seem to hold esteem among the list, so I'm sure some of you are aware
 of
 this new vehicle.

eBay # 4629081300 is for a 95 S350D with 187K miles but no mention of ever

Re: [MBZ] This Just Chaps My Ass

2006-04-15 Thread Rick Knoble

Executive compensation is just out of control. If they run the company
into the ground, they get tens of millions of dollars. If they do an
even halfway competant job they get hundreds of millions.

That was my point. A monkey could've been at the helm of Exxon/Mobil and as
long as he did nothing terribly stupid, they would've made record profits. A
real CEO that has turned a money losing turd into a gold mine will get my
respect and deserves to be appropriately compensated. Lee Iacocca comes to
mind. Like him or not, the guy did a good job turning the Chrysler company
profitable again. They even bought the Jeep brand on his watch. That was a
pretty smart move, although the AMC employees weren't too happy losing their
jobs. Perhaps some visionary will come to the rescue of GM. They could use a
little insight right now.

RANT
People are stupid. If you consider that the folks on this list, whether they
are college graduates or not, are probably in the 95 percentile or above in
intelligence, that means that out of every one hundred folks you meet, you
will think that the great percentage of them are idiots. Combine this with
Home Equity Lines Of Credit, ten thousand dollar plus credit limits on
credit cards, and the reputation of bullet proof Benzes, and you have eBay.
I bought my cars from private sellers, whose cars I just happened to notice
in front of their homes for sale. I believe that Clay (Redghost) had bought
Gump on eBay. Some have luck, you just gotta know what to look for. Carboned
up cars, and cars with bad B2 pistons, can sometimes be had for cheap. We
know this, because we are here, and we work on this stuff every day. The
pristine cars go for big bucks. I believe things will turn around, because
the majority of the populous know NOTHING of a mechanical nature, let alone
MB diesels and they will get tired of getting screwed at the shop. It is not
like the early 20th century, where people actually fixed their own vehicles.
