[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC 4 Wood Warbler Species Saturday July 12, 2014

2014-07-12 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC Bird Walk Saturday July 12, 2014

On a bird walk in Central Park this morning led by Dr. Bob DeCandido we saw the
following (not the entire list):

Adult male Chestnut-sided Warbler - Laupot Bridge (new for the season)
Black-and-white Warbler - 2 females - Tupelo Field Humming Tombstone (seen
last weekend at the Upper Lobe)
American Redstart - very short tail with female-like plumage - Maintenance
Field (not the bird we saw last weekend).

In addition, a British birder who joined us reported an adult male
Northern Parula in the Ramble. He gave a good description, and we had
seen an adult male in the Ramble last weekend.

House Wren - singing
Eastern Kingbird - 4
Black-capped Chickadee - 3 or 4
Warbling Vireos with older fledglings
Baltimore Orioles - somewhere between 10 15 of these - adults and young -
various locations

A couple of small flocks of southbound Red-winged Blackbirds

Wood Ducks continue at the Reservoir and Turtle Pond.

My apologies for not texting the Chestnut-sided Warbler at the time (some sort
of cell phone dead zone).

Here's one of the Black-and-white Warblers:

Central Park NYC Bird Walk on Sunday August 3, 2014

Just the highlights of a walk around the Ramble:

Yellow Warbler - 6 on the walk including an adult male, but mostly immatures,
more later in the day
American Redstart - 7 including 2 adult males
Northern Waterthrush - continues at Azalea Pond
Black-and-white Warbler - east of the Upper Lobe

We received two reports of a Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the island near
Bow Bridge. And one report of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at the Upper
Lobe on Saturday (likely the female that nested).

For those interested in breeding birds, we saw many young birds being fed by
adults including Eastern Kingbirds and Warbling Vireos, and a bumper crop of
young Gray Catbirds. The Song Sparrows nesting on the island also produced
young.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 8/17 JBWR East Pond - Dickcissel, Caspian Tern

2014-08-18 Thread Deborah Allen
Sorry not to have posted this earlier. On Saturday afternoon I found a Wilson's
Phalarope very close to the entrance at the south end of the East Pond at
around 2:20pm. I took a few photos of the bird then went along the east side of
the pond to see what else was around (not much). When I returned at around 4pm
I couldn't relocate the bird.

Here's a photo:

Subject: [nysbirds-l] 8/17 JBWR East Pond - Dickcissel, Caspian Tern

Hi All,
Jared Cole and I walked the length of the east shore of the East Pond of
Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge this afternoon starting at the south entrance about
45 mins after peak high tide. The highlights included a Caspian Tern first seen
resting on the west shore about half-way between the raunt and the island. It
was then re-found on the beach at low tide on the bayshore opposite the north
end of the pond. Along the gravel road at the north end, we were excited to
stumble upon a female? Dickcissel. The gate that leads onto the gravel road off
Cross Bay Blvd was closed and locked, and I'm not sure if it's possible to walk
around it, so keep that in mind if you want to try for that bird. The water
level on the pond was still somewhat high and some parts were sticky especially
toward the north side, but we had no problems with knee-high rubber boots.
Shorebird numbers and diversity were very disappointing.

Re: [nysbirds-l] CBC results for Central Park, NY from 14 Dec

2014-12-21 Thread Deborah Allen
Thank you, Susan, for reporting the Central Park Christmas Count results.

The Red-breasted Nuthatch seen at the Pinetum by the Great Lawn team is missing
from the list.

On our bird walk this morning (12/21) we saw a Ruby-crowned Kinglet at the
north end of the Point, and early this morning I found a Pine Siskin (perhaps
the same bird reported from the Ramble on the count) near Laupot Bridge with a
small flock of American Goldfinches. The three male Ring-necked Ducks continue
on the Reservoir.

Re: [nysbirds-l] 12/26- Couch's Cassin's Kingbirds (including Couch's AUDIO)

2014-12-26 Thread Deborah Allen
Some additional details re: today's Couch's Kingbird at Abingdon Square:

Photo showing the spread wing indicates that the bird is an adult male by the
very pointed outer primary (P10):

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17932675

It also appears that P6 is slightly notched unlike the P6 on a Tropical
Kingbird.

Photo showing the relatively shallow tail fork, characteristic of an adult
Couch's Kingbird:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17932677

It was wonderful to see this bird today. Thanks to everyone for the stream of
updates on its location.

Here are a couple of photos, and more importantly a video, of the Couch's
Kingbird, taken early(ish) this morning, when the bird was on Hudson
St.:https://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/

You can go directly to the video, in which the Kingbird calls repeatedly,
here:https://www.flickr.com/photos/29840397@N08/15929914767/in/photostream/
The video will be embedded into this eBird list at some point soon, courtesy
of vimeo (since the Flickr/eBird embedding seems
buggy):http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S21034505

We also found the Cassin's Kingbird in the Community Garden at Floyd Bennett
Field in Brooklyn in the early afternoon, and spent time with it until ~1:40 PM.
All in all a very pleasant day of birding in the city, thanks to vagrant
kingbirds, glorious weather, and the MTA (NYC public transit system).
Good Birding-Doug Gochfeld. Brooklyn, NY.

[nysbirds-l] Comments and photos re: Cassin's Kingbird at Floyd Bennett Field

2015-01-06 Thread Deborah Allen
On Saturday, December 27th, Bob DeCandido and I paid a visit to the Cassin's
Kingbird at Floyd Bennett Field, obtaining several photos, among them:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17935335

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17935268

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17935269

An examination of the photos reveals that the bird is an adult male.

Pyle discusses Cassin's Kingbird in his Identification Guide to North American
Birds: Part 1 with illustrations of the wing formula (Figure 171), the shape
of the outermost primary (p10) by sex and age (Figure 173), and a comparison of
the shape of P6 in adult male and female Cassin's Kingbirds (Figure 174).

Here's a close-up of the outer primaries of the Floyd Bennett Field Cassin's
Kingbird:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=17941419

Here we can see that not only is the outermost primary less deeply notched than
that of the similar Western Kingbird (Figure 176 in Pyle), but P6 is narrower
than that of an adult female Cassin's Kingbird (Figure 174).

The Slater Museum of Natural History Wing Tail Image Collection is also
useful in this regard.

Here's the dorsal surface of an adult male Cassin's Kingbird from the Slater
collection (specimen 78061a):

http://digitalcollections.pugetsound.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/slaterwing/id/13198/rec/1

And the dorsal surface of a male Western Kingbird [not an adult] from the
Slater collection (specimen 17298a) for comparison. P10 is an adult feathers
and has a very long and narrow sickle shape:

http://digitalcollections.pugetsound.edu/cdm/singleitem/collection/slaterwing/id/12466/rec/1

We tend to think that birds found outside their normal range are young birds,
but both the Cassin's Kingbird and Couch's Kingbird are adult males. One
wonders where they spent the previous fall and winter.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Swainson's Warbler in Propect Park?

2015-05-11 Thread Deborah Allen
Michael,

Your bird is a Warbling Vireo, a common breeding bird in NY State and in local
urban parks. It appears to be collecting nesting material.

The bill and leg color, bluish-gray, are right for Warbling Vireo, but not for
Swainson's Warbler.

Swainson's Warbler is warm brown on the crown, eye line and auricular, back,
wings, and tail. Your bird is neutral brown on the crown and brown with an
olive wash on the back wings. In addition Swainson's Warbler has a
sharply-pointed bill and the crown is flattened, not rounded.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Central Park, NY, NY: Cliff Swallows April 10, 2015

2015-04-10 Thread Deborah Allen
Thanks, Anders, for posting my NYNYBIRD text.

I found the two Cliff Swallows at the Meer on Bob DeCandido's bird walk and was
able to get a photo of one at a little before 9:15am. By lunchtime the swallows
had been seen by several more birders. Also in the flock, which had swelled to
more than two dozen birds were Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, and Northern
Rough-winged Swallows. The swallows would perch in a tree on the island, then
fly off together (perhaps to warm up), allowing good, but distant looks at both
perched and flying birds.

Cliff Swallow photo:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18002216

Other birds (not all) at the north end this morning:

Wood Duck - male at the Meer
Bufflehead - 4 at the Pool
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Egret
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Northern Flicker
Eastern Phoebe
Fish Crow
Black-capped Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Brown Creeper
Blue-gray Gnatcatchers - 2, one at either end of the Loch
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Hermit Thrush
Northern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
Pine Warbler
Palm Warbler
Eastern Towhee
Swamp Sparrow
Song Sparrow
American Goldfinch

At the Reservoir the Common Loon came in close at the northeast corner. Also
seen there: American Black Duck (2), Northern Shoveler (10), Bufflehead
(10)Hooded Merganser (2), Ruddy Duck (2), American Coot (1) and three species
of gulls, but not Laughing Gull.

[nysbirds-l] Franklin's Gull at Plum Beach, Brooklyn Sunday May 24th

2015-05-24 Thread Deborah Allen
Bob DeCandido and I went to Plum Beach in Brooklyn after lunch today (May 24)
to
look for the recently reported Nelson's Sparrows, which we didn't find. Bob
headed back to the car while attempted to comb through the Laughing Gulls in
search of the Black-headed Gull that had recently been reported. I wasn't able
to find the Black-headed Gull, but decided to try for a few flight shots of the
gulls. When we got home, I looked through my photos and found a Franklin's
Gull. Here's a link to the photo:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18027240

The Franklin's Gull was hanging around with the Laughing Gulls on the beach,
which kept flying up because of all the foot traffic. Most of the gulls were
fairly close to the sand bar.

Also a small flock of Sanderlings and some Least Terns.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC Thursday August Augst 20th

2015-08-20 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park, NYC
Thursday August 20th
OBS: Deborah Allen

Inspired by tweets from Adrianb, I decided to check out the Reservoir late this
afternoon.

The flock of 21Gadwall reported was still around, but I couldn't relocate the
Northern Shoveler.

The number of Ring-billed Gulls had increased to at least 200, with many
Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls and Double-crested Cormorants around too.

Most of the gulls were resting on the dike, including at least eight Laughing
Gulls. All of the Laughing Gulls appeared to be molting and none had a solid
black head. The Laughing Gulls were best viewed from the south side of the
Reservoir near the gate house. A good 3/4 of the gulls took off just a bit
before 4pm as is usually the case.

Also quite close to the south gate house was a single juvenile Spotted
Sandpiper.

On the way out, I checked the mudflats at the 59th Street Pond hoping for
another Spotted Sandpiper, finding only a Northern Waterthrush and some House
Finches.

The Sora greedily devoured the unsalted peanuts (broken into small pieces) that
I gave him today. Outside the breeding season Soras are mostly granivorous.
They eat wild rice, smartweet seeds, and weed seeds. Smartweed is in the
buckwheat family, and I'm sure the bird would appreciate some buckwheat groats
(kasha), wild or brown rice, or even bird seed.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC - Saturday October 31, 2015 - Two Red-headed Woodpeckers

The highlight of today's walk was not one but two Red-headed Woodpeckers, both
immature (hatch-year) birds, one at the Oven busy storing acorns, the other at
the Locust Grove (found by Jeff Ward).

Wood Duck - 3 on Turtle Pond, the 2 males molting
Double-crested Cormorant - "v" of about 20 heading south
Cooper's Hawk - juvenile and subadult both perched and also flying
Red-tailed Hawk - flyover adult and juvenile
Red-headed Woodpecker - hatch-year birds Oven & Locust Grove (thanks Jeff)
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 5
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 2
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker - 2
Peregrine Falcon - adult over Pinetum
Tufted Titmouse - 5
White-breasted Nuthatch - 7 (one of these chased by the Red-headed Woodpecker
at the Oven)
Winter Wren - Tupelo Field
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2
Hermit Thrush - 12 (probably forgot to count some)
American Robin - many
Gray Catbird - Maintenance Field
Cedar Waxwing - 33 most at King of Poland
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 3 at Azalea Pond
Eastern Towhee
Song Sparrow - 5
White-throated Sparrow - 5
Northern Cardinal
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - heard only near feeders
Common Grackle - flock
American Goldfinch - 2

Elena Gaillard showed me some feathers from an American Woodcock near Willow
Rock in the Ramble. Apparently some children made off with a dead woodcock
they'd found leaving a few feathers behind. The feathers looked like they'd been
plucked from the bird so perhaps one of the Cooper's Hawks or red-tails had a
few bites.

After the walk I had a quick look at the Reservoir finding only two Laughing
Gulls loafing on the dike along with the three common gull species -
Ring-billed, Herring and Great Black-backed. The Laughing Gulls seem to prefer
to the company of Ring-billed Gulls probably because they are less intimidating
than the larger gulls. It was nice to see some pale-bellied young
Double-crested Cormorants along with the adults. There were also a couple of
Northern Shovelers and a decent number of Gadwall at the Reservoir's south end.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NyS - Saturday September 5, 2015

2015-09-05 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park, NYC
Saturday September 5, 2015

OBS: R. DeCandido, D. Allen, m.ob. and some excellent birders
on the walk today which made life easy for Bob & I.

Today we had two bird walks, one starting at 7:30 am and another
starting at 9:00am with most of the 7:30 birders continuing. This is the
combined list:

Green Heron – (DA before 9 am walk)
Red-tailed Hawk
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Downy Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker
American Kestrel
Peregrine Falcon
Great Crested Flycatcher – 2 together
Eastern Kingbird
Warbling Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo
Black-capped Chickadee
White-breasted Nuthatch
Carolina Wren
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Veery
Wood Thrush
Gray Catbird
Ovenbird
Northern Waterthrush
Blue-winged Warbler
Black-and-white Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
American Redstart
Northern Parula
Magnolia Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Baltimore Oriole

Miriam Rakowski reported a Rose-breasted Grosbeak at the Upper Lobe.

The Green Heron at Turtle Pond was a hatch-year bird.
During the ten minutes that I watched it fishing, it made five attempts and
caught four fish, an 80% success rate- not bad for a youngster on a
duckweed-covered
pond. Bob tells me the fish were bluegills.

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC & Pelham Bay Park - Sunday Dec. 20 - Orange-crowned Warbler & Ovenbird

2015-12-21 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC
Sunday December 20, 2015
OBS: Robert DeCandido, Deborah Allen, others

After spending a good part of the morning with the Great Lawn team led by
Richard Lieberman on the Central Park CBC, I joined up with Bob DeCandido's
bird walk.

In the Great Lawn section an Orange-crowned Warbler spotted by Richard
Lieberman south of the Met Museum was notable. After the initial Orange-crowned
Warbler impression I took several diagnostic (but not aesthetically pleasing)
photos of the key field marks just to be absolutely certain of the i.d.before
tweeting the bird. If you haven't done so already check out the #birdcp on
twitter.

Here's the list for Bob's bird walk:

Canada Goose - Reservoir
Mallard - Reservoir
Ring-necked Duck - male on Reservoir
Bufflehead - 3 Reservoir
Ruddy Duck - around 140 on Reservoir
Great Horned Owl - also reported on Christmas Count
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 4
Downy woodpecker - 2
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 4 0r 5 - near Met Museum, northwest Pinetum, &
elsewhere
Northern Flicker - male at the Upper Lobe (Ramble)
Black-capped Chickadee - 4
Tufted Titmouse - 6
White-breasted Nuthatch - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 5 (2 south of Met Museum, 2 in Ramble near Gill
Overlook, 1 northwest Pinetum)
Hermit Thrush - 1 south of Met Museum
Orange-crowned Warbler - south of Met Museum
Fox Sparrow - 3 in Mugger's Woods in the Ramble
House Finch - around 20
American Goldfinch - 10

Sweetgums still attracting many birds.
-

Bob DeCandido & I spent part of the afternoon in Pelham Bay Park.

HIghlights:

Off the larger of the Twin Islands:
Flock of around 40 Red-breated Mergansers
Male Common Goldeneye

Hunter Island - entrance to Kazimiroff trail:
Northern Mockingbird
Cedar Waxwing - small flock of 4
Ovenbird - spotted by Bob - very cooperative

Two Red-tailed Hawks flew past us on Pelham Parkway.

I could get used to seeing two warblers in one day in December.

Central Park NYC
Saturday November 21, 2015
OBS: Deborah Allen, m.ob. on bird walk

Thanks to Adrian Burke, who tweeted the flycatcher at 8:55am our group had only
to walk up the hill from the Boathouse to see the bird of the day, a flycatcher
that has yet to be identified as either Pacific-slope or Cordilleran
flycatcher. This is a first for Central Park. Angus Wilson has already posted a
link to the NYSARC report that added the species pair to the NY State
checklist. Thanks also to Bob Ruvolo who spotted the bird on Wednesday (Nov.
18) and Jack Rothman of City Island Birds and Brendan Keogh (a.k.a. Bronx
Brendan) who saw the bird with him that day. Although originally reported at a
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, the report got people out looking for this V.I.B.
Let's hope it sticks around for more photos and sound recordings.

Gadwall - 4 on the Reservoir before the walk
Northern Shoveler - a few on the Lake, others on the Reservoir
Ring-necked Duck (seen after the walk by Jeff Ward)
Bufflehead - 9

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC - Saturday May 28, 2016 incl. Dickcissel, Black Vulture & Prairie Warbler

2016-05-28 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC
Saturday May 28, 2016
OBS: Robert DeCandido, Deborah Allen, m.ob. on bird walks starting from 7:30am
& 9am at the Boathouse.

Late in the 9am walk some of us went up to the Great Hill to look for the
Dickcissel the group had seen on Friday morning. The Dickcissel was found
Friday by a British couple on the walk and identified by Bob. I'm happy to
report that everyone in the group who trekked up to the north end Saturday got
great looks at the bird. Karen Fung's tweet at around 7:30am this morning was
very helpful as were Bok Tsim & Lee who had the bird in view when our group
arrived at the Great Hill late this morning.

Gadwall - pair Lake
Great Egret - flyovers
Black Vulture - flyover west of the park at about 105th Street & Broadway
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - Summer House
Chimney Swift - flyovers
Red-bellied Woodpecker - Maintenance Field
Downy Woodpecker - Maintenance Field & pair at Tupelo Field\
Eastern Wood-Pewee - heard
Empidonax Flycatcher - one or two
Great Crested Flycatcher - 2 Humming Tombstone, 1 Maintenance Field
Eastern Kingbird - pair Lake
Warbling Vireo - various locations
Red-eyed Vireo - various locations
Barn Swallow - 4 over the Lake
House Wren - one or two singing south/west Blowdown & Scharf Gardens (Deb
before walk)
Wood Thrush - heard east of the Pool (Deb before walk)
Gray Catbird - many
Ovenbird - heard Scharf Gardens (Deb before walk)
Common Yellowthroat - Warbler Rock (7:30am walk)
American Redstart - 7
Yellow Warbler - Willow at the Oven (7:30am walk)
Blackpoll Warbler - 10 - 3 of these at the Point
Yellow-rumped Warbler - (7:30am walk)
Prairie Warbler - singing male Alice In Wonderland Statue (Bob before 7:30 walk)
Eastern Towhee - male (7:30 walk)
Dickcissel - first-spring (first-cycle) male Great Hill
Red-winged Blackbird - Turtle Pond
Baltimore Oriole - pairs

Why is the Dickcissel a first-spring male?

The black on the throat is veiled with white.
The tertials (inner flight feathers of the wing next to he body) are very worn.
Most young Dickcissels don't molt these in fall.
The outer tail feathers (a.k.a. rectrices) are tapered. The outer tail feathers
are the feathers seen on the underside of the folded tail. Check out the tail
feather on the bird's right side.

See Pyle, Peter. 1997. Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part I.
The Dickissel is on pages 623-624.

Here are links to some photos of the Dickcissel from today in which you can see
the points I've mentioned:

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC - Sunday June 26, 2016 - R-b Nuthatch Arrival, late date Black-and-white Warbler

2016-06-26 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC - Ramble
Sunday June 26, 2016
OBS: Robert DeCandido, PhD, Deborah Allen, m.ob. on bird walk starting from
Turtle Pond at 9am

Highlights: Jeff Ward spotted a Red-breasted Nuthatch at the Maintenance Field.
Red-breasted Nuthatch does not summer in Central Park, and today's
Red-breasted Nuthatch represents the park's earliest fall arrival date.
We found two Red-breasted Nuthatches yesterday, June 25th, at the NYBG
(Bronx), so these birds may also have been very early fall arrivals. A
Red-breasted Nuthatch was also reported today from Brooklyn by Tom
Preston via twitter.

The group found two Black-and-white Warblers, one in Mugger's Woods, the other
at the Tupelo Field. This is the latest spring date we know of for
Black-and-white Warbler in Central Park. The previous record was June 25, 2006
(spotted by Sandra Critelli on another of our bird walks). One of the birds
(female - Mugger's Woods) is likely the bird we saw last week, the other was an
adult male still in alternate plumage at the Tupelo Field. It becomes difficult
to tell at this time of year whether this new Black-and-white Warbler
represents a lingering spring migrant, an early fall migrant or "post-breeding
dispersal."

The List:
Canada Goose - Turtle Pond
Gadwall - pair Turtle Pond
Mallard - female with 3 young ducklings, and others Turtle Pond
Double-crested Cormorant - Turtle Pond
Great Egret - Turtle Pond
Red-tailed Hawk - adult (Pale Male) and juvenile near Cedar Hill (after walk)
Mourning Dove
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Great Crested Flycatcher - Tupelo Field (Martin Cuntz), Azalea Pond (Karen
Evans)
Eastern Kingbird - Turtle Pond
Warbling Vireo - Warbler Rock, the Point
Red-eyed Vireo - Tupelo Field, pair Azalea Pond
Blue Jay - juvenile fed by adult on the Point
Barn Swallow - over Great Lawn (before walk)
Black-capped Chickadee - 2 Mugger's Woods
Red-breasted Nuthatch - Maintenance Field (spotted by Jeff Ward)
White-breasted Nuthatch - 2 Azalea Pond
House Wren - singing Stone Arch
Gray Catbird - 2 adults and 2 fledglings near Boathouse (Carine Mitchell),
others elsewhere
Cedar Waxwing - Oven
Black-and-white Warbler - Mugger's Woods (female), Tupelo Field & Azalea Pond
(alternate-plumaged male) spotted by Martin Cuntz
Eastern Towhee - heard from Maintenance Field (Bob before walk)
Chipping Sparrow - adult bathing at Gill Overlook (Deb before walk)
White-throated Sparrow - 2
Northern Cardinal
Baltimore Oriole - various locations, many molting
House Finch - here & there and nice looks at a hatch-year male at the Oven

RE: [nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC - Sunday June 26, 2016 - R-b Nuthatch Arrival, late date Black-and-white Warbler

2016-06-26 Thread Deborah Allen

Thank you Shai,

For the Kingbird links. The previous early fall arrival date for Red-breasted
Nuthatch for Central Park was July 8, 2007 right in line with the other early
arrivals listed in Ken Feustel's paper.

Winter finch forecast anyone?

[nysbirds-l] Bronx Zoo - Friday January 22, 2016 - Wilson's Warbler & Ruby-crowned Kinglet

2016-01-22 Thread Deborah Allen
Bronx Zoo
Friday January 22, 2016
OBS: Robert DeCandido & Deborah Allen

Today Bob DeCandido and I went to the Bronx Zoo to check on Todd Olson's
Wilson's Warbler. We found the bird just inside the Asia Gate at the camel
enclosure where there are plantings of bamboo and Leatherleaf Viburnum. A
Ruby-crowned Kinglet was in the same area.

Here's a link to a photo of the Wilson's Warbler (click to enlarge):

[nysbirds-l] Central Park NYC - Thursday Feb. 18, 2016 - Photos of Iceland Gull & Branta Goose

2016-02-19 Thread Deborah Allen
Central Park NYC - Thursday Feb. 18, 2016
Photos of Iceland Gull & Branta Goose
OBS: Deborah Allen

Thursday I saw the First-winter/first-cycle Iceland Gull that's been appearing
at the Reservoir off and on since January 30th. The gull was standing on the
Reservoir's retaining wall very close to the pumphouse at the north end with
about thirty Ring-billed Gulls and a first-winter Great Black-backed Gull. Just
after I tweeted the bird at 1:05 Annabella Cannarella happened by, and I was
able to point out the gull. The gulls flew off and returned several times.
Fifteen minutes later the Iceland Gull had apparently had enough of the human
traffic (joggers, etc.) and flew off. I'm not sure if it came back later.

Iceland Gull photos from Feb. 18th:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18189941
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18189942
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18189943

The Iceland Gull had disappeared by the time Fritz Mueller and Sharron Crocker
arrived.

I had seen the odd Branta goose, first reported by Peter Post on Feb. 12th, as
I walked up the west side of the Reservoir earlier and decided to retrace my
steps to look for it. I was called back by Sharron within minutes. Fritz had
spotted the goose very close to where the Iceland Gull had been.

Branta goose on the Reservoir Feb. 18th:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18189940

I would like to propose a new name for this troublesome goose - Branta
desgraciada.

A Red-breasted Merganser was at the south end of the Reservoir:
http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18189944

Other birds at the Reservoir: Great Black-backed Gull (4), Ring-billed Gull
(fewer than 300), Herring Gull (not many), American Black Duck (female),
Mallard, Northern Shoveler (around 50), Hooded Merganser (at least 7),
Bufflehead (at least 8), Ruddy Duck (around 20), Double-crested Cormorant (9 or
10), Pied-billed Grebe.

I regret I wasn't able to get a photo of a distant Turkey Vulture flying over
the NE corner of the Reservoir. It arrived before I had the lens on the camera.

The Wood Duck continued at the 59th Street Pond, but I was unable to locate the
Great Blue Heron there, and looked for, but didn't find the Great Horned Owl.
